The next few days were very hard for me. I could not stop thinking about what I overheard Luke saying on that phone call. It was clear that some bad people were threatening him and his family. The thought of anyone hurting Luke or my own father made me feel sick with worry. I tried to act normal around Luke, but it was difficult. Every time I looked at his kind face, I imagined the fear and sadness he must be feeling underneath. How could someone so good get mixed up in such darkness? One evening, I found Luke in the study, staring out the window with a glass of whiskey in his hand. I hesitated in the doorway, wondering if I should disturb him. "Come in, Bella," he said without turning around, as if he could sense my presence. I entered slowly. "Are you alright? You seem...troubled." Luke finally turned to face me, and I was struck by how weary he looked - like the weight of the world rested on his shoulders. "To be honest, I'm at my wits' end," he sighed, running a hand through his greying hair. "This situation...it's becoming increasingly impossible to shoulder alone." My heart went out to him. I wanted nothing more than to take this burden off him, to make the sadness and fear go away. "Luke, you know you can talk to me about anything," I said gently. "I hate seeing you suffer like this." He looked at me solemnly for a long moment before speaking again. "There are...dangerous people I've gotten entangled with, Bella. People whose power and reach know no limits. They've Put me in an untenable position - cooperate fully in their illicit affairs or risk the lives of those I love most." A lump formed in my throat as the weight of his words sank in. So my horrible suspicions were true - Luke was being forced into criminal activities against his will to protect his family and mine. "Oh Luke..." I whispered, tears stinging my eyes. "That's just...monstrous." He nodded grimly. "Indeed. And it's a waking nightmare that seems to only grow darker by the day." I moved closer and placed my hand on his arm. "Please, you have to let me help shoulder this somehow. You don't have to face it alone." Luke looked at me searchingly. "Bella, these men are utterly without conscience or mercy. Associating with me at all puts you in grave risk. I couldn't bear it if-" "If what?" I cut him off insistently. "If these bastards hurt me too? Then so be it - at least I'll be standing alongside the man I..." I trailed off, realizing I'd nearly blurted out the depths of my feelings for him. Luke's eyes widened slightly, realizing what I had stopped myself from saying. An intense silence stretched between us, the air thick with unspoken yearnings and unresolved tensions. Finally, Luke spoke in a low rumble. "You cannot begin to understand the fires you insist on playing with, Bella. I am not the upstanding man you make me out to be - the shadows go deeper than you know." "Then help me understand," I pleaded, searching his stormy gaze. "No more secrets, Luke. Not if you want my help." He let out a harsh chuckle. "Very well, you want the unvarnished truth? The criminal dealings I've been strong-armed into go back over a decade - a gradual seeping of poison into my life and business affairs that has now rendered me fully compromised." My stomach twisted sickly as he confirmed my worst fears - that this was no fleeting dalliance with darkness, but a lasting moral corrosion. "The men I'm involved with span multiple continents," Luke continued grimly. "An utterly unscrupulous cabal that has infiltrated the highest levels of power and society. They deal in weapons, drugs, human trafficking - you name the atrocity and they've profited from it." "That's horrible..." I breathed, feeling ill just imagining the kinds of depravity Luke had been forced to take part in. "But what do they want from you specifically?" A muscle ticked in his taut jaw. "That's the insidious part - they already have everything they want from me. Complete access to funnel their operations and illicit funds through every branch of my global cybersecurity company. I'm a Trojan horse that's been hollowed out from the inside." My heart hammered sickly in my chest. "But...that would mean my father is involved too, Luke! Being your business partner..." The anguish in Luke's eyes said it all before he even spoke. "Yes. They've had leverage over both of us from the start, using our families as human bargaining chips to ensure total cooperation. Your father knows no more of the specifics than I've allowed - it was a risk I took to keep you all at arm's length from the worst of it." White-hot rage momentarily lanced through me at the idea of my own flesh and blood being victimized in such a way without their knowledge. I opened my mouth to demand answers, but Luke pressed on. "This call you overheard the other night...it was them squeezing me for the ultimate leverage. Despite everything I've sacrificed, everything I've let them pilfered and defiled in service to their aims...they want more. A final, unthinkable way to guarantee that every shred of defiance has been bled from me." His hand was shaking slightly as he took another swig of whiskey. I could see the disgust and self-loathing roiling in his eyes. "Luke..." I stepped closer, cupping the weathered plane of his whiskered cheek. "What else could they possibly want from you?" The muscle ticked again as he clenched his jaw so tightly I could see the strain in the tendons of his neck. When his eyes met mine again, they were blazing with naked torment. "They want you, Bella." The bottom dropped out of my stomach as the air rushed from my lungs in a sickened gasp. Me? Why on earth would those monsters be demanding me as some sort of collateral? Seeming to read the question in my horrified expression, Luke choked out a bitter, disgusted noise. "Not in the way you're thinking, thank Christ. Their tastes don't run quite that depraved from what I'm aware of." He threw back the rest of his drink and turned away from me abruptly, unable or unwilling to meet my gaze any longer. "No, they want you for the one thing that would well and truly break me - as my wife." I recoiled slightly, confused. "Your...wife? But why would having me as your-" "Don't you understand?" Luke cut me off harshly, whirling back with eyes blazing. "By demanding I take you as my bride, it removes the last thin line of morality I've still been able to cling to like a drowning man! To look into your eyes and know they used a sham of a marriage to rob me of every last scrap of honor and decency..." He broke off, squeezing his eyes shut as if trying to block out the words. My own eyes stung with hot tears as I suddenly understood the full, crushing implications. Being forced to marry me - an innocent, and the daughter of the man whose life was also being mercilessly leveraged - would be a bridge too far. A depraved final move to prevent Luke from ever extricating himself from the clutches of the very criminal empire devouring him from the inside out. "Oh Luke..." I choked out around the lump in my throat. "That's so incredibly...cruel. And sick." "Indeed. Which is why they suggested it." He dropped into the armchair, shard and defeated like I'd never seen him before. "I'm rapidly running out of rungs on this ethical ladder to hell. And they know if I'm faced with dragging you any further into the heart of darkness consuming me...it may be the straw that breaks me completely." My heart broke for this tormented man before me - a pillar of honor and integrity being mercilessly stripped away piece by piece by evil men utterly devoid of empathy or conscience. I wanted nothing more than to take his pain into myself so he wouldn't have to suffer another moment. Moving on instinct, I crossed over to kneel before Luke, taking his clenched fists in my hands. He looked up at me sharply, eyes like pits of anguish. "Then let me take that torment away from you," I said fiercely. "Luke, if being your wife is what's needed to set you free of this nightmare, I'll do it without hesitation. You don't have to shoulder this alone anymore. I won't let those soulless bastards claim the last of you."
