The sound of the doorbell echoes through the cavernous foyer of Luke Montgomery's mansion. My heart pounds as I smooth out my sundress, trying my best to appear calm and composed. This is it - the moment I've been desperately fantasizing about for years. Luke opens the door, his striking face warming to a polite smile. "Bella, welcome. Please, come in." His deep voice has the same subtle vibrations that used to give me butterflies as a lovestruck teenager. Except now at 24 years old, the way he makes me feel is far more intense and heated. "Thanks for having me, Mr. Montgomery," I say, struggling to maintain eye contact without getting flustered. "I really appreciate you letting me stay here while my parents are overseas." He chuckles softly. "No need for formalities. You can call me Luke." I bite my lip as he turns to lead me further inside, unable to stop my eyes from wandering down his broad shoulders tapering to his narrow waist. Luke has always been a statueseque figure of masculine grace and power. But up close like this, it's utterly disarming. We walk through the marble entranceway into a lavish living room with soaring ceilings and sumptuous leather furniture. "Your room is just upstairs to the left," he says. "I'll let you get settled in." "Okay, thanks." I start heading towards the grand staircase but pause to glance back at him. "Oh, and Luke?" "Yes?" I swallow hard. "It's...really good to see you again." The hint of a smile pulls at the corner of his mouth, those steel grey eyes locking on to me with an indecipherable look. "You too, Bella." My cheeks flush as I quickly hurry upstairs to my guest room. I set my bags down and flop onto the plush king-sized bed, letting out a long, shaky sigh. Being this close to Luke is both a dream and a unique kind of torture. He's my dad's best friend and business partner - totally off-limits in every sane universe. Not to mention he's twenty years older than me. But ever since I was a dumb kid harboring my first real crush, I've never been able to shake the fierce yearning and desire I feel for this man. Luke Montgomery is like a sleek panther - powerful and graceful with that air of quiet, contained intensity always simmering beneath his unflappable exterior. How many nights have I laid awake replaying vivid fantasies of somehow capturing his interest? Of Luke's eyes smoldering into mine as his calloused hands slowly undress me? I sit upright, fanning my flushed cheeks as I force myself to regain composure. This is my one real chance to be near him again after all these years. I can't blow it by acting like a desperate, horny basket-case. Luke sees me as nothing more than a family friend. If I'm ever going to make him see me as something more, I need to be poised, mature...seductive. Later that evening, I wander downstairs wearing a formfitting black dress that hugs every curve. Luke is in the living room, drinking a glass of scotch while he reviews some documents. He glances up and his eyes briefly linger on me before looking back down. "I was just catching up on some work," he says. "Can I get you anything to drink?" "I'm okay, thanks." I take a seat across from him, crossing my legs to accentuate my toned thighs. "So how have you been, Luke? We hardly got to catch up earlier." "Fine, all things considered. Just keeping busy as always." He clears his throat. "And you? Your parents mentioned you just finished up grad school." "That's right, got my masters in marketing. I actually just accepted a job at an ad agency here in the city starting in July." I lean in a bit, keeping my eyes locked on his chiseled features. "But until then...I'm all yours." The comment hangs there weighted with undeniable suggestion. Luke's eyes flick up to meet mine, that indecipherable look returning to his steely gaze. I hold the intense moment until he's the one that breaks away. "Right, well...I should give you some space to unwind from your trip." He rises from the couch, downing the last of his scotch. "I'll be in my study down the hall if you need anything else." My eyes linger on the contours of his backside as he walks away. So much for my first subtle overture. I sigh and lean back into the plush sofa. Luke is an impenetrable vault of iron discipline and control. But I'm just getting started. This cat and mouse game of seduction is far from over. That night, I find myself wandering the dark mansion unable to sleep. My mind is consumed with thoughts of Luke lying in his bedroom just down the hall. I wonder if he's awake and thinking of me too. Or perhaps f*****g some faceless woman in his subconscious like I've done with him so many times. I tiptoe past his bedroom door, the temptation to quietly try the handle nearly overwhelming me. But before I can succumb, the sound of voices stops me in my tracks. Luke's door is cracked open a sliver, and the hushed tones of what sounds like a tense conversation can be heard inside. * Voices leak through the cracked door - Luke's deep rumble alternating with another man's gravelly tone I don't recognize. I press closer, straining to make out their muffled words. "...appreciate the difficulty of your position," Luke says in a low, careful cadence. "But I've given you everything you asked for. When is enough going to be enough?" "Enough is never enough," the gruff voice replies. "Not until our operations are complete and our objectives achieved. You know that better than anyone, Montgomery." My heart pounds in my chest. What operations are they talking about? A chill runs down my spine thinking of what this could all mean. "You and I had a deal," Luke continues, an unmistakable edge creeping into his voice now. "Once I provided access, you guaranteed there would be no further asks. That my family would be left out of this." Family? My mind races wondering if somehow I'm the one being discussed. Before I can make sense of it, the other man lets out a bark of laughter. "Deals change, my friend. Circumstances evolve. You're in far too deep to be worrying about things like that now." There's an unmistakable sneer in his mocking tone. "Just be a good soldier and keep holding up your end. Otherwise, well...you know what'll happen." A tense silence follows and I hold my breath, paralyzed in the hallway. I'm utterly consumed by confusion and and rapidly mounting dread over what I've just overheard. What could Luke possibly be mixed up in? And with who? Finally, Luke's measured baritone cuts through the quiet. "For now," he says in a tone of forced acquiescence. "We'll continue as discussed." "Wise choice," the other man rejoins with callous satisfaction. "I'll be in touch." My heart leaps into my throat as a series of footsteps follows. I bolt away from the door, rushing back towards the staircase just as a formidable man in a dark suit emerges, his face concealed by the shadows. He stops for the briefest of moments, almost as if detecting my presence, before continuing on without a word. I press myself against the wall, adrenaline rushing through me, until the sound of the mansion's front door opens and closes with a hollow thud. Only then do I feel safe to uncoil and creep back to peer in through the crack of Luke's door. He's sitting on the edge of his bed, still in his dress shirt and pants, shoulders sagged and head cradled in his hands. My heart breaks a little seeing the proud, unflappable man I idolize looking so...defeated. Luke reaches over to his nightstand and pours himself a glass of amber liquid from a crystal decanter. As he knocks it back, I see his whole body tremble almost imperceptibly before shuddering out a long, weary sigh. Then his eyes drift up and lock directly onto me through the narrow opening. A gasp catches in my throat as I instinctively shrink back. But Luke doesn't react with surprise or ask who's there. He simply holds my petrified gaze for a few endless beats...then closes his eyes and leans back against the headboard, suddenly looking like the weight of the world rests on his shoulders. I wait several more excruciating moments before retreating back to my room in a daze. My mind races to make sense of the hushed and ominous conversation I just overheard. Luke is clearly in some kind of deep, dangerous bind. But with who? And what could they possibly have on him to exert such power over an honorable man like my father's closest friend? The most pressing question is - what choice do I have but to try and save Luke from whatever troubles he's found himself in? After idolizing and obsessing over him for so many years, I couldn't bear to see his light be extinguished in such darkness. Though our connection is still one of forbidden longing on my part, I know in my heart that I love this man deeply. I have to figure out a way to help him, no matter what the risks. The next morning, I force myself to act as normal as possible when I see Luke downstairs over coffee. His expression is unreadable, not a hint of the haunted man I glimpsed the night before bleeding through to the surface. "Morning," he says with an easy nod. "Sleep well?" "Yeah, great thanks," I lie, sipping my coffee while sneaking furtive glances at the object of my deepening obsession. "Listen, I was actually wondering if you could give me a tour of the grounds today? This place seems to go on forever." Luke considers for a moment before giving a little shrug. "Sure, I don't mind. Might be a nice break from the office for a bit."
