Chapter 1: The Frost of Betrayal
"Hold him down still, you useless bastards," Christ spat, his voice laced with a sickening mix of adrenaline and pure malice. "I want to make sure he never walks back into the Aether-Spire again."
The wet, sickening crunch of metal meeting bone echoed through the cavernous space. Gerald did not even have the breath left to scream. A sharp, white-hot agony flared from his right knee, instantly liquefying into a dead, burning numbness. His vision blurred, swimming with fracturing stars as his face was slammed back down onto the sub-zero steel floor. The surface was freezing, already coated in a thick, sticky pool of his own crimson blood.
Every breath he drew tasted like copper and industrial freon. He was trapped inside the deepest, darkest corner of the industrial underbelly of Aethelgard Prime, specifically inside the subterranean cryogenic vaults of Christ Logistics. Here, deep beneath the neon-drenched surface of the floating corporate paradise, nobody could hear a dying man beg. It was exactly midnight. Up above, the sky-high towers were illuminated by millions of holographic fireworks celebrating the annual Solstice Gala. The elite were drinking champagne, laughing, and trading billions in digital assets, completely unaware that a corporate execution was taking place right beneath their feet.
Christ stood over him, casually resting a heavy, blood-stained titanium pipe against his expensive leather shoe. He adjusted his silk tie, looking down at Gerald as if he were looking at a piece of discarded garbage on the street.
"Why, Christ?" Gerald choked out, his voice a raspy whisper as a thick wave of blood bubbled from his lips. "I gave... everything to the family. I solved the logistics crisis. I built the infrastructure."
"And that is exactly why you have to disappear, my dear adopted brother," Christ sneered, leaning down so close that Gerald could smell the expensive cologne on his collar. "You are too smart for your own good. Father actually considered giving you the sole voting shares of Christ Logistics. Imagine that. A stray, nameless dog from the lower slums, owning the majority of our family legacy? I don't think so. Besides, you keep looking at Laura as if she belongs to you. Laura is a diamond meant for a real heir, not a charity case like you."
Gerald gripped the freezing steel floor, his fingernails tearing as he tried to drag his shattered lower body away. The pain was an absolute monster, gnawing at his sanity, but his mind remained terrifyingly clear. He realized the cold truth now. This was a calculated execution, meticulously planned to look like a tragic workplace accident. A malfunctioning cryogenic valve, an unfortunate midnight inspection, a locked door. A clean story for the board of directors.
"Don't worry, Gerald. The system will handle the rest," Christ mocked, tapping the cybernetic interface on his own wrist. He looked down at Gerald's flashing wrist-interface, which was rapidly blinking orange. "Once your heart stops, your credit-caste drops to zero. You will be legally classified as liquidated property. No investigation. No trial. Just missing data."
Before Gerald could reply, Christ swung the pipe once more, shattering his left knee with a brutal, heavy blow. Gerald gasped, his chest heaving violently as his forehead pressed into the frigid pool of blood. The agony was so absolute that it transcended physical pain, turning his entire reality into a blinding white void.
"Finish it," Christ commanded his two hired enforcers, stepping back to avoid any splatter on his bespoke suit.
One of the large men stepped forward, a gleaming, mono-molecular blade sliding out from his sleeve. He grabbed Gerald by his messy black hair, pulling his head back brutally to expose his throat. Gerald stared directly into the man's cold, cybernetic eyes, refusing to close his own. He wanted to remember every detail, every face, every breath of this nightmare.
The blade cut fast and deep. It was a precise, professional slice meant to severed the vocal cords and the jugular, ensures that his death would be swift yet silent. Blood erupted from the wound, hot and violent, splashing across the pristine white walls of the vault. The enforcer let go, and Gerald dropped to the floor like a puppet with its strings cut. He clutched his neck, gasping for air that only filled his lungs with his own warm blood.
"Lock the vault doors," Christ ordered from the distance, his voice fading as he walked toward the exit. "Set the temperature to minus forty. Let the frost erase everything."
The heavy, pneumatic titanium doors groaned, slowly sliding shut. The mechanical seals engaged with a definitive, metallic thud, locking Gerald inside the absolute darkness of the freezing vault. The overhead vents immediately hissed, releasing a thick, white cloud of sub-zero cryogenic gas that began to rapidly lower the temperature of the room.
Gerald lay there in the dark, his body shivering violently as hypothermia began its swift, aggressive assault. The cold was a strange mercy, slowly numbing the agonizing fires in his knees and throat, but he knew it was the embrace of death. His blood was freezing into dark ice against the floor. His heartbeat was slowing down, each thump echoing in his ears like a dying drum.
No, his mind screamed, a sudden, primal roar of survival cutting through the fog of death. I refuse to die like this. I refuse to let them win.
Using the absolute last ounce of his fading strength, Gerald stopped trying to hold his bleeding neck. He flipped onto his stomach, pushing against the freezing steel with his raw, torn hands. He couldn't use his legs; they were completely useless, mangled shapes dragging behind him. Every centimeter he moved felt like a knife twisting in his spine, but he kept moving, leaving a wide, dark trail of blood across the frosted floor.
He remembered the layout of the vault. He had designed the automated maintenance system himself. There was a low-level ventilation shaft right beneath the primary coolant rack, meant for emergency drone access. It was a small opening, barely wide enough for a human, but it was his only chance.
He dragged himself forward, inch by agonizing inch. His vision was narrowing into a pinhole. His fingers were turning blue, losing their grip on the slick steel. He reached the vent, his bloody hand clawing at the metal grate. With a desperate, feral heave, he yanked the loose cover inward, shattering his fingernails in the process.
The opening was dark and cramped. He forced his head and shoulders into the shaft, pulling his heavy, broken lower body behind him. The metal edges of the duct cut deep into his back and shoulders, but he welcomed the pain because it meant he was still alive. He crawled blindly into the dark, suffocating space just as the main vault reached absolute zero, sealing his old life behind him in a tomb of ice.
He could hear the distant sound of the city's festive music vibrating through the metal pipes, a cruel contrast to his current reality. His strength was entirely spent. He collapsed face-first inside the dark shaft, his consciousness slipping away into a cold, black abyss as the automated system up above began to re-route the industrial waste.
He knew that if he survived this night, he would no longer be the obedient, grateful adopted son of the Christ family. The boy who believed in loyalty and hard work died on that freezing steel floor. If he opened his eyes again, he would become their absolute worst nightmare.
From the dark corners of the upper ventilation shaft, a heavy metal hatch suddenly rattled under the pressure of the city's internal drainage system, shifting slightly to reveal a sheer drop into the toxic, flooded abyss below.
"If you can hear me through the static, you pathetic piece of trash, just know that Laura is already mine," Christ’s voice suddenly echoed from the discarded, broken com-link device lying on the floor near the vent entrance, his final insult vibrating through the cold metal just before the signal died completely.
