chapters 1 : The Girl Who Shouldn't Exist
Daisy pulled her jacket tighter around herself as the cold night air brushed against her skin. The small town of Ravenshollow always felt colder after midnight. Empty streets. Silent houses. Yet tonight, she felt watched.
She stopped walking.
Behind her—nothing. No footsteps. No shadows.
Still, her heart raced.
"Get a grip, Daisy," she whispered to herself. But fear didn’t listen to reason.
She kept walking. Faster now. Every step felt heavier.
Somewhere deep inside her, something stirred. Something old. Something she didn’t understand.
And then—
A sound.
Footsteps.
Real this time.
She turned sharply. Her breath hitched.
A man stood at the edge of the street, half-shrouded in darkness. Tall. Broad shoulders. A presence so strong that Daisy froze without understanding why.
"Who..." her voice broke. "Who are you?"
The stranger stepped forward. The moonlight caught his face—sharp jawline, dark eyes that weren’t entirely human, and a gaze that pinned her in place.
"Go home," he said, his voice low and dangerous.
Her fear twisted into confusion.
"I don’t even know you," Daisy shot back, but her voice trembled.
The man—Noah—stared at her for a moment longer before shaking his head. He looked almost... angry. Not at her, but at himself.
"You’re not supposed to exist," he muttered under his breath.
Daisy didn’t hear him clearly. But before she could ask, he was gone.
Just... gone.
Like smoke.
She stood frozen on the empty street, her heart pounding, her mind spinning.
Who was he?
And why did she feel like she’d met him before? After a while .
Daisy pushed open the creaky front door of her aunt’s old house. The familiar scent of lavender and old books wrapped around her like a blanket. Before she could step inside, a voice rang from the hallway.
“Daisy! It’s so late. Do you know how worried I was?” Milli’s voice cracked slightly, both angry and scared at once.
Daisy’s guilt hit her instantly.
“I’m sorry, Milli,” she whispered.
Her aunt stood there in her worn sweater, eyes glassy from unshed tears. She wasn’t just her aunt—she was the only family Daisy had left. Her parents had been gone for years now, leaving nothing behind but blurred memories and a hole that never quite healed.
Milli stepped closer, her voice softer now. “You know it’s not safe after dark. Especially for you.”
“I know...” Daisy’s throat tightened. “Next time, I won’t stay out so late. I promise.”
Milli pulled her into a tight hug, one of those hugs that felt like safety itself.
“I just can’t lose you too,” Milli whispered against her hair.
Daisy swallowed hard and whispered back, “You won’t.”
When they finally let go, Daisy forced a small smile. “I’m really tired. I’m going to sleep.”
Milli nodded, though worry still clouded her face. “Alright, sweetheart. Sleep well.”
Daisy climbed the stairs slowly, every step feeling heavier than usual. Inside her small bedroom, she closed the door, leaned against it, and finally let herself exhale.
In the silence, her mind returned to him.
That man.
Or whatever he was.
No... he didn’t look human. Or am I imagining things? she thought, staring up at the cracked ceiling. His eyes... they weren’t normal. And the way he disappeared...
Her heart raced again.
Who was he?
Daisy curled up in bed, pulling the blanket tightly around herself, trying to ignore the strange heat still pulsing beneath her skin.
Whoever he is… I’ll probably never see him again…
But deep inside, something told her she was wrong.
