Chapter 1
Chelsea felt a surge of fear as she stood in the hospital room. The stark white walls seemed to close in around her, suffocating her with their sterility. Her mom, usually full of life, looked frail and pale on the bed. The only sound breaking the eerie silence was the rhythmic beeping of the monitor. What was once a place of healing now felt like the waiting room of a nightmare? As she looked, the sight before her shattered her heart into a million pieces. “This pain is too much for me to bear, I can't handle this alone Mum!”. She wept as tears streamed down her cheeks uncontrollably as she watched her mother lying on the hospital bed, her face contorted in agony. Her hands trembled as she reached out to gently brush her mother's hair away from her forehead, her touch tender yet filled with a sense of helplessness. Unable to bear the sight any longer, Chelsea sank to her knees beside the bed, her sobs wracking her body as she whispered words of comfort and reassurance. “Excuse me miss”. The doctor said, her hand reaching Chelsea. “Please see me in my office”, she uttered with a face full of seriousness which spelled out the urgency of the situation. Chelsea hurried to the doctor's office door, her hand shaking as she turned the knob. The noise of the door opening was lost amid the pounding pain in her head, adding to her feelings of distress. "Please, have a seat," the doctor said kindly. I'm Dr. Jamie, she said adjusting her glasses, her expression a careful balance of empathy and professionalism. "The good news, Chelsea, is that the surgery is very routine. The success rate is high, and your mom should make a full recovery.” She paused, letting the weight of the positive news settle. "However," she continued, her voice taking on a softer tone, "the procedure is not covered in its entirety by the government insurance plan. There will be out-of-pocket costs associated with the surgery and post-operative care." She leaned forward, placing a hand on the manila folder in front of her. "We've prepared a detailed breakdown of the estimated costs. Our financial department can work with you to establish a payment plan that fits your budget." The doctor's gaze held a silent plea - she understood the financial strain such a situation could cause, but addressing it directly felt too blunt. Chelsea looked at the doctor as her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. “Doctor, save my mom's life, I promise I'll pay every penny, she is all I got”, tears gushed out from her eyes as she stammered. “We will do our very best, Miss, But as you can see, we do not run a charity organization here”. The doctor said with her demeanor staying made, selling out no smidgen of pity or compassion for Chelsea. “A sum of $100.00 must be deposited to carry out any form of treatment “, she told Chelsea looking directly towards her will, piercing eyes that seemed to be sizing her up. “What! Chelsea screamed”. she inclined her trembling fingers to cooperate but couldn't, $100.00 is a huge amount of money which appeared to be a high mountain unable to climb. “Please Ma'am we don't have anyone to assist us financially, I stopped school because my mom couldn't afford my school fees anymore “, she said trembling as she kneed on the ground while she begged the Doctor. "Young lady, you're risking your mom's life. There's no way I can help you," she said, her voice strained as she struggled to maintain her composure despite her inner turmoil, she remained stoic yet empathetic. Behind her professional facade, however, there was a glimmer of compassion in her eyes, a subtle acknowledgment of the difficult position the family found themselves in. But she knew that in moments like these, it was her duty to be forthright and clear, even if it meant delivering unwelcome news without sugarcoating. The door cracked open, “Doctor emergency”, One of the nurses rushed in to inform Dr. Jamie. “Oh my goodness! Dr. Jamie said, rushing out of the office as she took her Stethoscope. “There is no way am gonna allow my mom to die” Chelsea's sharp voice sliced through, as it echoed in the air. Despite feeling hopeless, a sudden surge of determination ignited within her, driving her to fight for her mother's life with all the strength she had. ✿✿ ✿✿ In a cozy room, Mr. Rodriguez lounged on a sofa, reading a newspaper. A vintage TV sat on a shelf nearby, and a vase of bright flowers decorated the center table. Next to the room, a stylish dining table was set for a meal, with fairy lights adding a magical touch. Chelsea ran towards Mr. Rodriguez. The weightiness of the circumstance hung weighty in the air. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she pleaded with her uncle, her voice trembling with desperation. "Please, Uncle," she sobbed, "I can't lose her. We need help, any help, to save my Mom's life." Her heart felt heavy with fear and uncertainty, every word choked with emotion as she begged for his assistance, knowing that time was running out. Rage bent Mr. Rodriguez's face as he spat the words, his voice bound with toxin. "Could you at any point try and hear yourself, Chelsea? After all I've done, you have the boldness to request more? Must I drain my accounts dry because I have a leech clinging to me?". Just so you know, Mr. Rodriguez is Chelsea's last relative, a title he wore with a frown. Blood might be thicker than water, however, in Mr. Rodriguez's case, the water ran a reviving, lighthearted course, while his blood felt weighty with commitment. He saw Chelsea and her mom's prosperities as a weight, a weight he'd rather not carry. “To hell with you and your mom's life”, Mr. Rodriguez said without missing a word. Chelsea's voice trembled even so slightly as she pleaded, "Uncle Rodriguez, please, you have to understand. The doctor is asking for $100.00 for a deposit, I don't have a penny to my name”. On the other side of the room was Mrs Rodriguez who gazed sharply as a hawk, darted on Chelsea. “How shameless can you be Chelsea?” Mrs Rodriguez cut sharply. Tears obscuring Chelsea's eyes, she stifled out, "She's all I have left, ma'am. Please..." Her voice broke on a cry, a solitary outstretched hand a quiet supplication in the stifling quietness. A savage grin curved Mrs. Rodriguez's lips. "This spot isn't a charity, dear," she murmured, her voice dribbling with honeyed venom. "Don't you get it? “Every handout chips away at the very foundation we've built”. Maybe a little self-reliance would be more becoming”. Her eyes shone with chilly entertainment, a predator savoring the desperation in Chelse's gaze. “Security!!!, " summoned Mrs Rodriguez as she pushed her out. Chelsea's world shattered as she felt the weight of rejection, tears welling up in her eyes as she was forced away from the only place she ever thought she could get help from.
