Chapter 1: The Engagement
In the bustling heart of the city, the office building stood as a monument to ambition and success. Its sleek glass façade reflected the ceaseless motion of the streets below, where cars and people darted about like ants in a frenetic hive. Within, the air was thick with the hum of productivity, punctuated by the clacking of keyboards and the occasional murmur of conversation. Amidst this symphony of modernity, Linh Tran was the epitome of grace and determination. At twenty-eight, she was the project manager at Sterling & Co., a prestigious firm known for its cutting-edge technology and relentless pursuit of excellence. Her colleagues admired her for her sharp intellect and her ability to manage even the most complex of projects with a calm and collected demeanor. Yet, despite her professional success, Linh’s personal life was about to take a significant turn. It was a crisp autumn morning when Linh’s fiancé, David Carter, appeared in her office with a broad smile plastered on his face. David, a senior consultant at the same firm, was known for his easy charm and impeccable taste. The two had been together for over three years and were now on the verge of marriage. The office buzzed with excitement as word spread about their upcoming wedding. Today, David had come to deliver news that would alter the course of their lives forever. “Linh, darling,” David said, his voice radiating warmth as he entered her office. “I have something incredible to share with you.” Linh looked up from her desk, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. “What is it, David? You’re making me anxious with that grin.” David’s eyes twinkled mischievously. “I’ve been thinking about our wedding, and I’ve made a few changes to our plans.” Linh’s brow furrowed. “Changes? What do you mean?” David pulled out a small, velvet box from his pocket and opened it, revealing a beautiful, intricately designed ring. “I decided we should have a more intimate ceremony, just the two of us. I want it to be special, something we’ll always remember.” Linh’s heart fluttered as she gazed at the ring. “David, it’s beautiful. But are you sure about this? We’ve already made so many arrangements.” David took her hand gently. “I’m absolutely sure. This is about us, not about the grandeur of the event.” Linh’s eyes softened as she looked at him. “Alright, if that’s what you want, then let’s do it. I trust you.” The couple’s tender moment was interrupted by a sudden knock on the door. It was Emily Nguyen, Linh’s assistant, who entered with a stack of documents. She looked at the couple with a knowing smile. “Sorry to intrude, but I have those reports you requested, Linh. And, oh, congratulations on the wedding plans!” Linh smiled warmly. “Thank you, Emily. We’re really excited about it.” David glanced at Emily and then back at Linh. “You know, Emily, Linh has been working so hard lately. I thought it would be nice if we had a small celebration at the office to mark this occasion. What do you think?” Emily’s eyes lit up. “That sounds like a fantastic idea! I’m sure everyone will be thrilled to celebrate with you both.” David nodded approvingly. “Great. Let’s plan something for next week. I’ll take care of the details.” As David left, Linh felt a wave of contentment. The office was abuzz with excitement, and the anticipation of their upcoming wedding added a new layer of joy to her daily routine. However, little did Linh know that this happiness was about to be overshadowed by an unforeseen tragedy. Later that day, Linh went to her doctor for a routine check-up. She had been feeling unusually fatigued for the past few weeks but had attributed it to the stress of planning the wedding. However, the results of the tests were anything but reassuring. Dr. Ha, a middle-aged woman with a kind face, looked at Linh with a serious expression. “Linh, I’m afraid I have some difficult news.” Linh’s heart sank. “What’s wrong, Doctor?” Dr. Ha took a deep breath. “The tests reveal that you have a rare and incurable disease. It’s progressed quite rapidly, and unfortunately, there is no effective treatment available at this stage.” The room seemed to close in around Linh as she absorbed the gravity of the situation. “How long… do I have?” Dr. Ha hesitated before answering. “It’s hard to say with certainty, but the prognosis isn’t good. You should focus on making the most of the time you have left and seek support from your loved ones.” Linh’s mind raced as she left the clinic. She felt a profound sense of dread and confusion. Her life, which had seemed so perfect, was now on the brink of unraveling. When she arrived home, David was waiting for her with a hopeful smile. “How did it go, Linh? Everything okay?” Linh forced a smile, trying to mask her turmoil. “David, we need to talk. There’s something I have to tell you.” They sat down together, and Linh took a deep breath. “I’ve been diagnosed with a serious illness. The doctors say it’s incurable.” David’s expression changed from concern to a strange mixture of relief and unease. “I’m so sorry, Linh. This is really hard to hear.” Linh noticed the change in his demeanor but chose not to comment. “I know it’s a lot to take in. I just want to focus on us right now.” David’s eyes shifted away. “Of course. We’ll get through this together.” In the weeks that followed, Linh’s health declined rapidly. She found herself increasingly isolated, as her once vibrant life was overtaken by the debilitating effects of her illness. David’s visits grew less frequent, and his attention seemed to be divided. One evening, Linh returned home early, feeling unusually weak. As she entered the apartment, she heard muffled voices coming from their bedroom. Curiosity turned to shock as she quietly approached the door. Through a c***k, she saw David in bed with another woman, their actions unmistakably intimate. Linh’s heart shattered as she confronted them. “David! What is this?” David’s face went pale as he quickly pulled away from the other woman. “Linh! I… I didn’t expect you to be here.” The other woman, her face filled with a mixture of fear and satisfaction, quickly dressed and left the room. David tried to reach out to Linh, but she recoiled, her voice trembling with anger and betrayal. “Don’t touch me!” Linh screamed. “How could you do this to me?” David’s frustration boiled over. “Linh, you don’t understand. I’ve been dealing with so much. I couldn’t handle it anymore.” Linh’s anguish turned to rage as she lunged at him. The struggle was brief but intense. In the heat of the moment, David’s anger took a violent turn. He shoved Linh, causing her to stumble backward and hit her head against the edge of the desk. As Linh lay on the floor, blood seeping from her wound, David looked on in shock and regret. Her vision blurred, and the room spun as she felt herself slipping away. Her last thoughts were of a life that could have been, now irrevocably marred by betrayal and sorrow. In a twist of fate, Linh’s consciousness began to fade, only to be abruptly jolted back to the past. She awoke with a start, finding herself in her apartment, on the day of her engagement. The room was as it had been before her illness—bright, filled with the promise of a future she now knew would be fraught with challenges. With a new resolve, Linh set about changing her destiny. This time, she would be prepared. She would confront the betrayal, plan her revenge, and ultimately find a path to a better future, one that would allow her to reclaim her life and happiness.
