The night Everything changed
The rain fell heavily against the taxi window as Sofia Romano hugged her jacket tighter around her body.
“Just one more shift,” she whispered to herself, exhausted after another late night at the restaurant.
The streets of Chicago were unusually quiet. Too quiet.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket.
Mia: Did you leave work already?
Sofia smiled faintly and typed back quickly.
Yeah. I’m on my way home.
The taxi suddenly stopped.
Sofia frowned. “Why are we stopping?”
The driver didn’t answer.
A black SUV pulled up beside them.
Her heartbeat slowed.
Then quickened.
Three men stepped out dressed in black suits, their faces cold and emotionless. Fear crawled up Sofia’s spine.
“Drive!” she shouted.
But the driver locked the doors instead.
“What are you doing?!” she screamed, panic rising in her throat.
One of the men opened the taxi door slowly.
And that was when she saw him.
Tall.
Dark suit.
Cold gray eyes capable of killing without remorse.
Alessandro De Luca.
The most feared mafia Don in the city.
He stared at her like she already belonged to him.
Sofia’s breathing became uneven as he stepped closer.
“I think,” he said calmly, “you saw something you weren’t supposed to see.”
Her blood turned cold.
“I—I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
A dangerous smile touched his lips.
“Lying to me,” he murmured, “is a very bad idea.”
Before Sofia could run, strong arms dragged her out of the taxi.
She screamed.
Kicked.
Fought.
But Alessandro simply watched her struggle with unreadable eyes.
“Take her.”
And in that moment, Sofia realized one terrifying truth—
Her life no longer belonged to her.
