Chapter 1
Surrogate job offer. Emily paced back and forth in her small apartment, her mind racing with thoughts of her uncertain future. She had made the decision to become a surrogate mother, but the process was not going as smoothly as she had hoped. Emily had gone to multiple agencies, but they all turned her away due to her lack of experience. Emily was beginning to lose hope until she received a call from an unknown number. "Hello?" Emily answered hesitantly. "Hello, is this Emily?" a man's voice asked. "Yes, who is this?" Emily asked, her heart racing. "This is Alexander. I received your information from one of the surrogacy agencies. I'm interested in hiring you as our surrogate," Alexander said in a calm voice. Emily was taken aback. She had never heard of anyone being hired as a surrogate before. "I'm sorry, I don't understand. What do you mean, hired?" Emily asked, confused. "I mean, I will pay you for your services as a surrogate. My wife and I are unable to have children, and we're willing to pay any amount of money to make that happen," Alexander explained. Emily couldn't believe what she was hearing. She had never imagined being paid for something like this. She had only thought of surrogacy as a way to pay off her debts. But now, she had the opportunity to make a considerable amount of money. "When can we meet?" Emily asked, trying to sound professional. "We can meet tomorrow at my office. I'll send you the address and time," Alexander said before hanging up. Emily's mind was reeling with thoughts of what the meeting would entail. She knew she needed the money, but the idea of carrying someone else's child was foreign to her. The next day, Emily arrived at Alexander's office, dressed in her best professional attire. She was greeted by a receptionist who led her to Alexander's office. When Emily entered, she was surprised to see a beautiful woman sitting beside Alexander. "Emily, this is my wife, Sophia," Alexander said, introducing her. "Nice to meet you, Sophia," Emily said, extending her hand. "Likewise, Emily. Alexander has told me a lot about you," Sophia said with a smile. Emily felt a pang of jealousy but quickly pushed it aside. She was there for business, not to compete for Alexander's attention. Alexander began to explain the process of surrogacy and what it would entail. Emily listened intently, taking notes and asking questions when necessary. Alexander and Sophia were both impressed by Emily's professionalism and determination. As the meeting came to an end, Alexander handed Emily a contract and a check for a considerable amount of money. Emily couldn't believe her luck. She had finally found a way out of her financial troubles. As Emily left the office, she couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. Something about the meeting didn't sit right with her, but she couldn't put her finger on what it was. She walked down the street, clutching the check in her hand. It was a considerable amount of money, but Emily couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to this than just surrogacy. As she turned the corner, Emily felt a hand grab her from behind. She tried to scream, but a hand covered her mouth, muffling her cries. Emily struggled, but the person was too strong. They dragged her into an alleyway, away from the main street. "Who are you? What do you want?" Emily asked, her voice shaking. "Emily, it's me, Alexander," the man said as he removed his hand from her mouth. "What the hell? Why did you do that? You scared me!" Emily exclaimed, feeling angry and frightened at the same time. "I had to make sure you were the right fit for the job. I couldn't trust anyone with something as important as this," Alexander explained, trying to sound reassuring. Emily was furious. She couldn't believe what had just happened. "You could have asked me questions or done a background check. You didn't have to kidnap me!" Emily shouted, her voice echoing through the alley. "I'm sorry, Emily. I didn't mean to scare you. I just wanted to make sure you were the right person for the job," Alexander said, trying to placate her. Emily wasn't sure if she could trust Alexander after what had just happened. She wanted to back out of the agreement, but the thought of the money was too tempting. "Fine, but no more surprises like that, okay?" Emily said, her voice cold. Alexander nodded, knowing he had crossed a line. "I promise, no more surprises," he said, trying to sound sincere. Emily left the alleyway, feeling shaken and uncertain about the agreement. She didn't know if she could trust Alexander after what had just happened. Emily had always been independent, and the thought of carrying someone else's child for money made her feel uneasy. But the money was too good to pass up. Days turned into weeks, and Emily found herself growing closer to Alexander and Sophia. They had become more than just business partners; they were friends. Alexander and Sophia would take her out to dinner and talk about their lives. Emily had never felt so close to anyone before. One evening, as they were having dinner, Alexander and Sophia dropped a bombshell on Emily. "Emily, we want you to be the surrogate for not just one child but two," Alexander said, a smile on his face. Emily was taken aback. She had never heard of someone carrying twins before. "I don't know if I can do that. It's a lot to handle," Emily said, feeling overwhelmed. "We'll pay you double the amount of money we originally agreed upon. It will be worth it," Sophia said, trying to persuade Emily. Emily thought about it for a moment. The money was too good to pass up, but carrying twins would be a challenge. "Okay, I'll do it," Emily said, trying to sound confident. As the surrogacy process began, Emily found herself growing closer to Alexander. They would talk for hours, and Emily found herself sharing things with him that she had never shared with anyone before. But Emily knew it was just a business arrangement. She couldn't let her feelings get in the way. One day, as Emily was leaving Alexander's office, she overheard a conversation between Alexander and another woman. They were talking about a secret project, something that sounded big. Emily couldn't help but feel curious. She wanted to know what Alexander was working on. As the weeks went by, Emily found herself doing some investigating. She would sneak into Alexander's office when he wasn't there, searching through his files and computer for any information that could shed light on her unease. She found nothing out of the ordinary, but her gut feeling told her that something was off. One day, as Emily was leaving Alexander's office after a routine check-up, she overheard a conversation between him and his assistant. "I need to make sure she's the one. We can't afford any mistakes," Alexander said in a hushed tone. "Don't worry, sir. I've done a thorough background check on her. She's clean," the assistant reassured him. Emily's heart raced as she realized they were talking about her. What did Alexander mean by "make sure she's the one"? Was he having second thoughts about their agreement? Emily couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. That night, Emily couldn't sleep. She tossed and turned, trying to figure out what to do. She knew she needed the money, but she didn't want to put herself in a dangerous situation. She decided to confront Alexander and get some answers.
