Chapter 1: Picture Perfect
I never knew what I did wrong. She has never loved me. My mother treats me like I am the worst person on the planet and would be better off dead. This is because she blames me for my older brother’s death. She felt that if he wasn’t trying to protect me that he would still be alive. Hi, I am Shannon and just turned 16 a couple months ago. My brother, Donald, would have been 18 today. Yet he was murdered in our backyard two years ago. I was the one who had called mother while she was on her monthly “business trip”. Boy, did she not like being interrupted. She even didn’t show up until two days later when the police called for her to come take care of me.
My father died when I was three and my brother was always there to help me. Now its just me and this woman who doesn’t even care that I exist. At least not while we are at home. To the outside world, we are the picture perfect mother and daughter. The wealthy businesswoman and her princess. That’s what she wants you to think. Even though everything I have was bought with my babysitting money until I was able to get a part-time job at Peter’s Pizzeria. No one would believe that she neglects me. Im surprised she even lets me still be under her roof.
That is until today. When I found out that my mother wasn’t just a businesswoman, but the leader of one of the drug cartels and is married to the main boss. I also found out that my father’s death was no accident.
I am not sure how these pictures got into the box in the garage, but whoever put them there has been watching us. There are recent photos of me lounging in the backyard with my bestfriend Meredith, ones of mother talking on her phone in her car, of her in her office, and personal ones of me in my bedroom. Then there are some from when I was younger and of the night my brother died. I remember that because I am wearing my favorite green summer dress that I got from the thrift store. I ended up burning it because I couldn’t get the blood out.
