"Stop it, please. Jacob, stop!' I intervened, holding him back from confronting Rex. It wasn't that I doubted Jacob's ability to stand up to Rex, but I recognized an empty threat when I saw one. And Rex wasn't the kind of person to make idle threats. His warning to me last night still lingered in my mind, and I knew he meant every word.
