Chapter seven

The following morning, I awakened to the gentle warmth of sunlight streaming across my face, a soft glow that illuminated the room. Nestled beside me, Jason lay sleeping serenely, his one arm cradled beneath me while the other draped protectively over my body. He looked utterly captivating in his slumber, a vision of beauty that made my heart swell with affection. However, despite the delight of watching him, a pressing urgency was tugging at me—I desperately needed to relieve myself, and his arm was an unwelcome barrier preventing my escape. "Jason," I murmured softly, hoping to rouse him from his dreams, but my whisper was met with silence. I tried again, this time raising my voice just a notch. "Jason," I called out a bit louder, eliciting a low grunt in response, yet still no clear acknowledgment. With a sigh of frustration, I attempted to gently lift his arm from around me, but to my surprise, he tightened his hold, as if sensing my movement even in his sleep. I caught a faint mumble escape his lips, but the words were too muffled for me to decipher. Determined to make one last effort, I leaned in closer to his face, my heart racing with the hope of waking him. "Jason, I'm leaving," I declared, and the moment the words left my lips, his eyes shot open wide. The expression on his face was a mixture of confusion and surprise, as if he had been abruptly pulled from a deep slumber into the reality of the moment. At long last, with him finally awake, I seized the opportunity to make my way to the bathroom. However, before I could utter the words that I was in desperate need of a bathroom break, he tightened his embrace around me, as though he feared I might actually slip away. It struck me as peculiar that he would feel such concern over my departure, considering he had made it clear that he didn’t truly desire my presence; his actions seemed more like a tactic to ensure I remained at the company rather than a genuine affection for me. “Jason, I’m not really leaving,” I reassured him, my urgency pressing me to clarify. “I just needed a way to wake you up; I really have to pee badly.” Upon hearing my words, he pulled away, a look of relief washing over his features, which only served to deepen my confusion. Why did he care so much about my well-being? Yet, I realized that pondering his feelings was a luxury I couldn’t afford at that moment. All that mattered was the urgent need to reach the bathroom. The instant his arms released me, I sprang out of bed and dashed toward the bathroom, urgency fueling my every step. As I stepped out of the bathroom, my eyes were immediately drawn to Jason, who was in the process of getting dressed. I found myself unable to look away from the sight of his back, the muscles shifting beneath his skin. With a playful tone, he turned to me and asked, "Do you like what you see, Riley?" A hint of amusement laced his words. I quickly replied, "I apologize; I wasn't anticipating to find you up and about so soon." Truth be told, his early rise didn't bother me at all, but I knew better than to admit that—such a confession would surely haunt me forever.Jason chuckled warmly as he approached me, a gleam of excitement in his eyes. "Hurry up and get dressed; we're heading out for breakfast and then to visit your parents," he announced with enthusiasm. The moment his words reached my ears, a wave of anxiety washed over me. I genuinely wanted to see them; the longing in my heart was undeniable. Yet, the thought of revealing all that Jason had meticulously planned for our future felt daunting. I couldn’t shake the doubt that my parents, especially my father, would struggle to accept it. As a man who prided himself on his independence, he often resisted the notion of accepting help from others. This was precisely why my mother had turned to me for financial support. The weight of this situation loomed heavy, and I knew that navigating this conversation would be anything but easy.Once I had finished getting dressed, Jason whisked me away to a charming little café that had recently opened its doors. "Order anything you desire; it's on me," he offered generously. Despite his kind invitation, I opted for a simple bagel and an iced coffee—my usual morning fare. It was sufficient for me, as I didn't require much to start my day, especially since I wasn't much of a morning person. After we savored our meal, we made our way to my parents' house, and I took a moment to call my mother, informing her that we were on our way to visit them.Upon our arrival, I noticed my brother outside, diligently working on the car that our father had gifted him prior to his illness. "Hey, Jeremy," I called out to him. He turned, walked over, and enveloped me in a warm embrace, then informed Jason and me that our parents were waiting for us in the living room. "You should come in with us; we have something important to share with everyone," I urged. Jeremy nodded in agreement but cast a peculiar glance at Jason. As we entered the house, my mother rose to greet us, her smile brightening the room, while my father stood close by, attentively ensuring her stability as she leaned on him, weakened from the effects of chemotherapy."I have some exciting news to share regarding our wedding plans," I announced, striving to infuse my voice with as much joy as possible. "We will be getting married in just over a month." The revelation left my brother and father momentarily speechless, their expressions a mixture of surprise and disbelief, while my mother radiated pure happiness. "My sister," Jason interjected, "has taken on the role of wedding planner, and for reasons known only to her, she has been orchestrating my wedding since we were young." With newfound energy, my mother rose from her seat unaided by my father and enveloped both of us in a warm embrace, her excitement palpable. "We would also like to discuss the possibility of you moving closer to us," I continued, hoping to convey the importance of family unity. Jason quickly added, "I'll cover all the expenses, so you need not worry about finances. We sincerely hope you will consider this. I know how much Riley has longed to be near all of you, even while understanding the significance of her career." My mother turned to my father, her eyes pleading, urging him to agree, knowing it would enhance their lives. After a brief moment of contemplation, my father replied, "Alright, we can make that work. Thankfully, I’m at a point where I can retire, so I won’t have to stress about my job any longer." Overcome with joy, my mother wrapped her arms around my father in a heartfelt hug, sealing the promise of new beginnings and shared futures."I will have my realtor search for houses in close proximity to my home, so there’s no need for you to worry about that," Jason declared, a smile brightening his face. "Additionally, I will take care of the medical expenses; I can arrange for you to see a doctor at the finest hospitals in the city. As luck would have it, my cousin works there, so you won't have to fret about your treatment. If you would like, I can also arrange for a driver." My brother's expression didn't quite match the cheerful atmosphere; he masked his feelings under a facade of shock. However, knowing him as well as I did, I sensed the unease beneath the surface. I gently led him into the kitchen for a private conversation. "Is everything alright, Jeremy?" I inquired, though he simply nodded. "Yeah, it’s just that everything seems to be happening so quickly. I’m not sure how to process it all. I know Mom is happy, but it’s a lot to take in, you know?" It was indeed a challenge to grasp the whirlwind of events unfolding around us; I, too, was struggling to make sense of it all. "I would be truly delighted if you decided to move in with Mom and Dad. I might even be able to secure you a job at my workplace, should that interest you," I suggested, watching as Jeremy pondered my offer. After a moment of contemplation, he replied, "Alright, I can agree to that, but I will be bringing my car along. I could really use the money to buy parts; Dad and I have been working on this car for what feels like an eternity." With that, we made our way back into the living room, where we found Mom, Dad, and Jason engrossed in a discussion about the logistics of the impending move. As the hours slipped by, Jason and I eventually retreated to our hotel room, our minds buzzing with plans. We were set to leave the following day, heading back to the city to finalize all the necessary arrangements for when the family would relocate.
