Chapter 18

Nervously, I stood up and followed Sam through to his examination room, closing the door behind me. Once the door was shut, Sam began setting a few things up, leaving me standing in the middle of the room, slightly bewildered. "Good day at school Billy?" he asked casually as he always does, looking over at me briefly. "Not bad" I answered. "I have a parental form you need to fill in, for your visit tomorrow" I informed him, pulling out a scrunched up piece of paper from my pocket and showing him. "Ah good, I'll sign that later" he said. "Can you jump in the chair for me please, Billy?" "Yeah" I muttered. "I'm a bit nervous though Sam" I said. "I feel really hot." "Don't be nervous Billy, it's not going to hurt one bit, and I can promise you that. Maybe take off your school blazer?" I chucked my backpack in the corner of the room and followed Sam's advice, and took off my blazer, leaving my top half in just my white shirt and school tie. I then nervously stumbled into the chair. "Billy, are you okay?" Sam asked, touching my forehead with the back of his hand. "You're really sweaty, do you feel alright?" "I'm okay Sam, just nervous." I admitted, shaking slightly. "Are you going to be okay though, because I won't have time for any messing about I'm afraid." Sam said, still touching my forehead. "I'll be okay Sam." He stared at me for a few seconds, still touching my forehead with the back of his hand. It looked like he was thinking, yet confused. "Billy, I'm going to leave this until another time, because you really don't seem right today. Is that okay?" "Oh, right. Fine" I said bluntly, starting to feel a lot less nervous. "Can you wait in one of my spare rooms until I finish work please, Billy? I don't want you at home on your own if your temperature is high." "Sam, I'm not ill" I said standing up from the chair slowly. "I'm just anxious. You can fix my tooth now, it's fine." "Billy, I don't have time for messing around" said Sam. "I'm not messing you around! You're the one who said we should just do it another time. I'm fine with doing it now!" I started to shout, beginning to get angry. "Calm down, alright Billy?" Sam said softly. "For goodness sake Sam, what is your problem?" I yelled, picking up my bag and blazer angrily. "Can you go wait in my spare examination room please, Billy?" Sam said quietly. Without even looking at him, I stomped out the door full of rage and headed into the spare examination room, chucking my belongings on the floor and sitting in the corner of the room, sulking into my hands. I didn't cry. I was just angry. Five minutes later, Jasmine, the receptionist, walked into the room and closed the door behind her. She took a seat on the floor next to me. "Hey Billy, Sam asked me to come talk to you. What's up?" she asked softly. I looked up at her, confused, then sighed. "It's just Sam" I huffed. "Like, he was supposed to fix my chipped tooth today, but he said I wasn't feeling right. Then, I said I wanted it fixed but he told me he didn't have time for messing around, but I wasn't messing him around! I was just a little bit nervous. I really hate him sometimes." "Don't worry Billy, your brother is just a bit stressed out is all." Jasmine said softly. "He told me he's going to come fix it after his shift, before he takes you home. That's okay, right?" "Yeah that's fine, I just don't understand why he's so horrible to me" I explained, placing my head into my knees. "Your brother loves you Billy" Jasmine said, softly patting my back. "He talks about you a lot, always good things." "Really?" I asked, surpised, lifting my head up slightly to look at Jasmine. "Yep" she smiled. "But Jasmine. You're so kind. And so is Adam. Why isn't Sam?" "Sam is kind" she smiled. "He has a kind heart, he just gets very stressed out with work." "So, he takes out his stress on...me" I sighed. "Possibly" Jasmine admitted. "You should tell Sam how you feel, Billy." "He never understands" I sighed again. "What if I drop in a word about it?" "Would you do that, Jasmine? Really?" I asked, looking up at her with eager eyes. "Of course" she smiled. I leant over and gave her a big hug. "Thanks Jasmine" I said, standing up. She stood up with me. "No problem at all Billy" she smiled. "I need to get back to work now, so I better be off. Sam said you should wait in here until he's finished, just do homework or play on your phone, yeah? And obviously, go to the toilet if needed" she laughed. I nodded my head in agreement, and Jasmine walked out the room, closing the door behind her. I took a seat on the spinny chair that Sam or Adam usually used and pulled it close to the counter bordering the room. I sat and completed my homework, not the most interesting thing in the world, yet necessary. At one point, Adam popped his head through the door, startling me... "Hey Billy" he said, smiling gently. "Hi Adam" I replied. "So Sam informed me I'll be putting your braces back on, Wednesday. Excited?" "What do you think?" I said coldly, rolling my eyes. "I'll take that as a no" he sniggered. "What are you doing anyway?" "Waiting for Sam to fix my tooth" I replied. "What's wrong with it?" he asked, entering the room to stand next to me. I opened my mouth and pointed to the chip in my front tooth. "Dang" Adam said...... "Has Sam put wax on it?" he laughed, frowning slightly and glaring at my tooth. "Yeah, why?" I responded. "He's such a protection freak" Adam sniggered, causing me to laugh along with him. "Yo, can I sign your cast?" he asked excitedly. "Adam, you're almost as big of a child as Samuel" I laughed, passing him my arm. "I'll take that as a compliment" he grinned. He proceeded to sign my cast, yet before he left the room, grinned slightly at the homework in front of me. "By the way, the answer to question four is actually thirty-two. It seems you minused rather than divided" he winked, then left the room. Hours later, after I'd finished all my homework, Sam entered the room looking incredibly tired. "Hi Billy" he smiled faintly. "Are you feeling any better?" he asked. "I told you Sam, I'm not ill! I just got anxious" I informed. "Okay, sorry Billy" he sympathised, rubbing his eyes with his fists. "Are you sure you're awake enough to actually do this?" I sniggered slightly. "Yeah, yeah, I'm fine" he said. "I've already got everything set up in my other room, so let's go in there." I grabbed all my belongings and followed Sam into the previous examination room, closing the door behind me and taking a seat in the reclining chair. Sam reclined the chair and placed on his mask, gloves and this time some protective glasses. He then positioned the light, placed a bib on my chest, put some protective glasses on my eyes and then quietly asked me to open my mouth. Knowing Sam wasn't in the best mood and not wanting to start a royal rumble, I opened my mouth wide without hesitation. Sam lifted up my chin slightly, then began his work. Firstly, he used his explorer to pick off the wax he'd put on my tooth last night and wiped the leftover bits of wax on my bib. Next, he filed the tooth so it was smooth, then moulded some material on my tooth, until it was a normal tooth shape. Finally, Sam told me to close my eyes; he used a UV light to harden the material, and it was finally done! "All done Billy" Sam informed me, taking off my bib and raising the chair. "Thank you" I muttered quietly, not quite wanting to speak to Sam whilst he was in a bad mood. "I'm so tired" he yawned. "Come on Billy, let's go home."
