When I awoke, it was nearly noon and the house was quiet. A quick check of the premises revealed that my mother was gone. I hoped she hadn’t run to Dennis to tell him about me and Alex, but I felt fairly confident she wouldn’t do that. She loved Dennis and telling him that Alex and I were sleeping together would not only cause all kinds of chaos between father and son, it could also jeopardize her marriage and I doubted she was ready to deal with that kind of blowback. No, my mother wouldn’t confront Dennis. Instead, she’d pressure me to stop seeing Alex. Telling me that Alex was engaged was just the start of her plan to break us up. Even though I figured the engagement story was bullshit, I still intended to ask Alex about the situation just to be sure.
