When I stumbled home early the next morning after spending most of the night with Alex, my mother was waiting for me. I thought for sure she’d be spending the weekend at Dennis’s, so seeing her on the sofa when I walked in was a bit of a shock. “I can’t believe you stayed out all night,” she said. “I told you I was going bowling with Alex.” “It’s nearly five in the morning!” I shrugged and said nothing. I was tired and I really didn’t feel like arguing with her. All I wanted to do was climb into bed and pull the covers over my head.
