I was working on a monthly report when Sonya stopped by my cubicle and asked to speak with me in her office. Following her, I noticed she seemed to be putting on weight. She’d never been a particularly thin woman so the weight gain wouldn’t have been immediately noticeable, but it was clear now. I wondered if she was stress-eating or eating for two. “Have a seat,” she said before closing the door behind me. I sat across from her desk and she settled in her chair, facing me. “I wanted to talk with you about some changes coming,” she said. My first thought was that I was being laid off. Panic set in and I forced myself to keep quiet and hear what she had to say before saying anything myself. “In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m pregnant,” Sonya said. “My baby is due in about five months.”
