I’d just closed the blinds in the living room and was about to scrounge something up for dinner Sunday evening when the doorbell rang. I hadn’t been expecting company and, since my mother was at Dennis’s, I knew she wouldn’t have invited anyone over. “f**k,” I cursed after peeking through the blinds and seeing Alex on the porch. I opened the front door, but blocked the entrance. He frowned. “Can I come in?” “Where’s Chloe?” I asked, looking around. “Is she parking the car?” “She’s on her way back to California.
