The Dream That Wouldn’t End
The dream returned on the night of the Silver Moon. Lyra knew it was a dream. At least, she thought she did. The problem was that every time she entered it, the city felt more real than the world she woke up to. She stood on a bridge made of crystal and moonlight. Below her stretched an endless city. Silver towers pierced the heavens. Glowing rivers flowed through the air. Countless floating islands drifted between clouds painted with stars. Ancient bells echoed somewhere in the distance. The sound was beautiful. And sad. Like a memory that refused to die. The city seemed abandoned. Yet Lyra could feel thousands of eyes watching her. Waiting. The same feeling washed over her every night. As though the city knew her. As though it had been waiting a very long time. A cold wind swept across the bridge. Then the voice came. The voice that haunted every dream. “Find us.” Lyra spun around. No one stood behind her. The bridge remained empty. The city remained silent. “Who are you?” she called. Her voice echoed endlessly. The answer arrived from everywhere at once. “Find us before the last bell falls.” A tremor shook the city. The towers flickered. The sky darkened. For a brief moment, Lyra saw something enormous moving beneath the floating islands. Something ancient. Something alive. Then another voice whispered directly into her ear. A voice filled with fear. “Hurry.” The bridge cracked. Moonlight shattered beneath her feet. The city began collapsing. The bells rang louder. Faster. Desperately. Then everything exploded into white light. ⸻ Lyra sat upright in bed. Her heart hammered against her ribs. Cold sweat covered her skin. For several seconds she simply stared into the darkness. The dream again. The exact same dream. For the thirtieth night in a row. Moonlight streamed through her bedroom window. The familiar room slowly came into focus. Books. A wooden desk. A lantern. The silver journal resting beside her bed. Home. Or at least the closest thing she had to home. She rubbed her eyes. “Not again.” The silver mark on her wrist pulsed faintly. A reminder. A warning. Ever since Dawn Hollow, strange things had been happening. The Crown Vision. The Moon Gate. The impossible glimpse of a future that might one day come true. She had spent months convincing herself it wasn’t real. Months pretending life had returned to normal. Months failing. Because nothing about her life was normal anymore. A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. “Lyra?” Aunt Mara. “Are you awake?” Lyra forced a smile. “Come in.” The door opened. Aunt Mara stepped inside carrying a small tray. The scent of tea filled the room. Instant comfort. Instant safety. The older woman studied her carefully. “You had the dream again.” It wasn’t a question. Lyra sighed. “Am I that obvious?” “Only every single morning.” Despite everything, Lyra laughed. Aunt Mara sat beside her. The smile slowly disappeared. “Still the same city?” Lyra nodded. “The same bridge.” “The same bells.” “The same voice.” Concern flickered across Aunt Mara’s face. That worried Lyra more than the dream itself. Because Aunt Mara rarely looked afraid. “Do you know what it means?” The older woman hesitated. Too long. Which meant she knew something. “Aunt Mara.” Silence. Then a sigh. “There are old stories.” Lyra immediately straightened. “What stories?” “The stories speak of a city hidden beyond time.” A chill crawled down her spine. A city hidden beyond time. The exact phrase from her dream journal. The exact phrase she had never told anyone. “How do you know that?” Aunt Mara’s expression darkened. “Because your mother once searched for it.” The room became very quiet. Lyra’s heart skipped. “My mother?” Aunt Mara nodded slowly. “Years before you were born.” The revelation hit hard. Everything connected. The dreams. The city. The voice. Her mother. None of it could be coincidence. None of it. Before Lyra could ask another question, a loud crash echoed from downstairs. Followed by shouting. Then another crash. Aunt Mara immediately stood. “What was that?” The answer arrived seconds later. The front door burst open. A familiar voice yelled from below. “LYRA!” Luna. Panicked. Terrified. And Luna never panicked. Never. Lyra and Aunt Mara exchanged a look. Then they ran. ⸻ Luna stood in the middle of the living room. Covered in dirt. Breathing hard. Her silver cloak torn. The sight alone was alarming. The Guardian stood behind her. Massive. Tense. Its silver eyes scanned every window. Every door. Every shadow. The fox paced across the floor. Which was somehow even more alarming. The fox only paced when things were very bad. Very, very bad. “What happened?” Luna looked up. Fear filled her eyes. “We found another one.” Lyra frowned. “Another what?” No one answered immediately. The hesitation made her stomach twist. Finally, Luna spoke. “A missing village.” Silence. The words didn’t make sense. Not at first. Then they did. And they were terrifying. “What do you mean missing?” Luna swallowed. “The entire village disappeared.” A chill spread through the room. “Disappeared how?” The fox answered. “Completely.” No jokes. No sarcasm. Just fear. The fox continued. “Buildings gone.” “People gone.” “Animals gone.” “Everything gone.” Lyra stared. “That’s impossible.” The Guardian growled softly. A sound that suggested otherwise. Luna nodded. “That’s what we thought.” The room fell silent. Then Luna pulled something from her pocket. A piece of silver stone. Ancient. Glowing faintly. The moment Lyra saw it— The mark on her wrist burned. Pain shot through her arm. She gasped. The stone reacted instantly. Silver symbols appeared across its surface. Ancient symbols. The same symbols from her dream. The same symbols from the bridge. The same symbols from the city. Everyone froze. “No way.” The fox stepped closer. “Please tell me that’s not what I think it is.” Luna looked pale. The Guardian lowered its head. And for the first time in months… Real fear filled the room. “What is it?” Lyra whispered. Luna answered quietly. “A fragment.” “A fragment of what?” The silver stone glowed brighter. The symbols shifted. Forming words. Ancient words. Forgotten words. Words no one had seen for thousands of years. Then Luna finally said the name. The name from legend. The name from nightmare. The name from Lyra’s dreams. “The Lost City of Eternity.” The room fell silent. Outside, thunder rolled across the distant horizon. A storm was coming. And somehow… Lyra knew the storm had been waiting for her. ⸻ That night, sleep never came. Lyra sat beside her window. The fragment rested on her desk. Moonlight bathed the room. The silver symbols continued glowing softly. Calling. Waiting. Watching. The city was real. The dreams were real. And somewhere beyond the edge of the known world… Something was awakening. Something ancient. Something forgotten. Something that knew her name. Far away, beneath a sky no map could reach, a silver bell rang. Once. Twice. Three times. And deep within the Lost City of Eternity… Ancient eyes slowly opened.
