Chapter 6: The Man from the Abyss

744 Words
"Daughter..." The word echoed through the sacred grounds like a curse. Lyra froze. The hooded man slowly emerged from the chasm, his black cloak trailing behind him like living shadows. The air around him seemed to darken, swallowing the moonlight itself. His single silver eye never left hers. "No..." Lyra whispered, shaking her head. "You're not my father." The man smiled faintly. "I suppose that's true." "I never had the chance to raise you." A chill ran down Lyra's spine. Kael stepped in front of her, his aura surging. "Who are you?" The stranger ignored him completely. Instead, he looked at Lyra with an expression that was strangely gentle. "You have your mother's eyes." Lyra's heart skipped a beat. "You knew my mother?" "I loved her." The words struck everyone into silence. Darius's face darkened. "This isn't the place." The hooded man turned toward him. "Darius... still protecting her after all these years." "I made a promise." "And you've kept it." The stranger nodded with respect. "You've done well." Kael's patience snapped. "I asked you a question!" The Alpha's voice thundered across the battlefield. "Who are you?" The hooded man slowly removed his hood. Gasps erupted throughout the clearing. A jagged scar stretched across the left side of his face. His long silver hair flowed over his shoulders. He looked neither young nor old, yet his eyes carried the weight of centuries. One of the oldest elders stumbled backward. His face drained of all color. "It..." "It can't be..." Another elder collapsed to his knees. "The Shadow King..." Fear spread through the crowd. Even the visiting Alphas took an uneasy step back. The Shadow King smiled. "So..." "Some of you still remember me." Kael frowned. "I don't." "Of course you don't." "You weren't born when your ancestors declared war on my kingdom." The clearing fell silent. Darius clenched his jaw. "You should have stayed buried." "I tried." The Shadow King's voice became cold. "But they murdered the woman I loved." He looked at Lyra again. "And stole my daughter." Lyra's legs weakened. Her mind refused to believe him. "My parents..." "They loved me." "They did." "They raised me." "They did." "They died protecting me." "They did." His answers were calm. "They were good people." "They were never your enemies." Lyra blinked in confusion. "What?" The Shadow King sighed. "They saved your life." Silence. "When my kingdom fell, I placed you in the arms of the only couple I trusted." "They escaped with you while I stayed behind to fight." "They were supposed to return." "They never could." Lyra felt tears blur her vision. The memories from her childhood flooded back. Her mother's warning. "Never let anyone know who you really are." At the time, she had thought it was just another bedtime story. Now... It sounded like a desperate plea. Kael looked from Lyra to the Shadow King. "If she's telling the truth..." "Why reveal yourself now?" The Shadow King's expression hardened. "Because time has run out." He lifted his hand toward the crimson moon. "It has awakened." Everyone looked up. The Blood Moon had changed. A black shadow slowly crept across its surface. The oldest elder screamed. "The Eclipse!" "No..." "It isn't due for another hundred years!" The Shadow King's silver eye filled with sorrow. "It isn't a natural eclipse." "It's a seal." "A seal that has begun to break." The ground trembled violently. A deafening roar echoed from deep beneath the mountains. The sound was unlike anything Lyra had ever heard. It wasn't a wolf. It wasn't human. It was something ancient. Something imprisoned. Cracks raced across the earth. A wave of black energy burst from the chasm. Every wolf cried out in pain. Every wolf... Except Lyra. She stood motionless. The black energy reached her... Then split in two, flowing harmlessly around her body. The Shadow King's face became grim. "It's worse than I feared." Kael narrowed his eyes. "What is?" The Shadow King looked directly at Lyra. "The prison recognizes its true heir." Lyra's heart pounded. "What prison?" Before he could answer— A skeletal hand burst through the cracked earth beside the altar. Then another. Then dozens more. The soil exploded as pale, lifeless creatures clawed their way out of the ground. Their empty eyes glowed an eerie blue. One by one, they turned toward Lyra. Then, as if commanded by a single will, every creature dropped to one knee. Their hollow voices echoed together. "Welcome home... Your Majesty."
