Chapter 1: The Night of Rejection
The Blood Moon hung high above Mooncrest Pack, bathing the sacred grounds in crimson light.
It was the Night of Awakening.
The most anticipated night in every werewolf's life.
The night the Moon Goddess revealed fated mates.
Hundreds of pack members filled the ancient ceremonial grounds, their voices buzzing with excitement. Warriors stood proudly in polished armor while elders chanted prayers around the Moon Altar. Young wolves whispered hopeful dreams, each wondering who destiny had chosen for them.
But among the crowd stood Lyra Blackwood, her heart pounding so hard she thought everyone could hear it.
She smoothed the wrinkles from her simple white dress, her fingers trembling.
"Relax."
Ava, her childhood friend, nudged her shoulder with a teasing smile.
"You look like you're about to faint."
Lyra forced a nervous laugh.
"What if my mate hates me?"
Ava rolled her eyes.
"Impossible."
"You don't know that."
"I know you. You're kind, brave, and beautiful. Besides..." Ava leaned closer, lowering her voice. "Half the unmated girls are praying they don't get Alpha Kael."
Lyra's face immediately flushed.
"Ava!"
"What? Everyone knows you've been in love with him since you were fifteen."
Lyra quickly looked away.
She had.
Alpha Kael Ashthorn.
The strongest Alpha in the Northern Territories.
Feared by enemies.
Respected by allies.
Handsome beyond words.
Untouchable.
He rarely smiled. Rarely spoke more than necessary. Yet every time Lyra found herself in danger during training or patrol, Kael always appeared before anyone else.
She had spent years wondering why.
Tonight...
Perhaps she would finally know.
A long silver horn echoed across the valley.
The crowd immediately fell silent.
Every eye turned toward the towering Moon Altar.
The elders stepped aside.
Alpha Kael emerged from the shadows.
The atmosphere changed instantly.
His presence alone commanded respect.
Tall.
Broad-shouldered.
Dressed in a black ceremonial cloak trimmed with silver fur.
His piercing silver eyes swept across the crowd without emotion.
He climbed the altar and faced his pack.
"Tonight," he announced, his deep voice carrying across the clearing, "the Moon Goddess shall reveal what fate has written."
A chorus of cheers answered him.
The Head Elder raised his hands toward the Blood Moon.
"Let the Awakening begin."
One by one, young wolves stepped forward.
Some cried with happiness as they found their mates.
Others laughed in relief.
A few walked away heartbroken, destined to wait another year.
Lyra clasped her hands together.
Her turn came.
She stepped onto the sacred stone.
The instant her bare feet touched the altar—
Something exploded inside her.
Heat surged through every vein.
Her wolf stirred violently.
"Mate..."
The whisper echoed inside her soul.
Her breath caught.
Her eyes searched the crowd desperately.
Then...
They found him.
Kael.
At that exact moment, Kael froze.
For the first time all evening, his expression changed.
His silver eyes locked onto Lyra.
The invisible bond between them snapped into existence.
Lyra gasped.
She felt it.
Every heartbeat.
Every breath.
Every emotion.
Tears filled her eyes.
"It... it's him," she whispered.
Her wolf purred with joy.
"We found him."
The crowd noticed.
Whispers spread like wildfire.
"The Alpha found his mate."
"It's Lyra."
"The Moon Goddess chose her."
A smile slowly spread across Lyra's face.
Every lonely dream she'd ever carried suddenly made sense.
She took one hesitant step toward him.
"Alpha..."
Kael descended from the altar.
The crowd parted, watching with smiles and excited whispers.
Lyra's pulse raced as he stopped in front of her.
Close enough for her to feel the warmth radiating from his body.
Close enough for destiny to unite them.
She looked into his silver eyes.
"I am your mate."
Silence.
Kael stared at her.
His face revealed nothing.
No happiness.
No relief.
No love.
Only cold calculation.
Something inside Lyra tightened.
Then Kael spoke.
"I reject you."
The words barely reached her ears.
Her smile disappeared.
"...What?"
His voice rose, loud enough for the entire pack to hear.
"I, Kael Ashthorn, Alpha of Mooncrest Pack, reject Lyra Blackwood as my fated mate."
A collective gasp swept through the crowd.
Lyra's world shattered.
Pain exploded through her chest.
It felt as though invisible claws ripped through her heart.
She screamed.
Her knees struck the cold stone.
Every breath became torture.
Her wolf cried out inside her mind.
"Why... why would he do this?"
Tears streamed down Lyra's face as she looked up at him.
"What... did I do wrong?"
Kael didn't answer.
He simply turned his back on her.
"End the ceremony."
His voice was colder than winter.
Around Lyra, whispers began.
"She was rejected..."
"I've never seen an Alpha reject his fated mate."
"How embarrassing."
Some looked at her with pity.
Others laughed quietly.
Each whisper cut deeper than the rejection itself.
Lyra tried to stand, but her legs refused to obey.
She had never felt so broken.
Kael took his first step away.
Then—
A deep growl echoed across the sacred grounds.
It wasn't from any wolf in Mooncrest.
It came from the ancient Moon Altar itself.
The massive stone platform trembled beneath everyone's feet.
Cracks spread across its surface.
One elder staggered backward.
"No..."
Another dropped to his knees.
"It can't be..."
A blinding silver light burst from beneath Lyra.
The force threw nearby warriors off their feet.
The torches surrounding the altar were extinguished at once.
A powerful wave of energy swept through the clearing.
Every wolf instinctively lowered their head.
Even Alpha Kael.
His wolf, Fenrir, bowed without permission.
Kael's eyes widened.
Impossible.
An Alpha's wolf bowed to no one.
The silver light wrapped around Lyra like flowing moonfire.
Slowly...
She rose into the air.
Her tears vanished.
Her hair danced wildly in the wind.
When she opened her eyes again...
They were no longer hazel.
They glowed with pure silver light.
The Blood Moon turned even darker.
An elderly voice broke the silence.
"No..."
The oldest elder stared at Lyra with horror.
"We've made a terrible mistake."
Kael spun toward him.
"What are you talking about?"
The elder's lips trembled.
"You didn't reject an ordinary she-wolf..."
"You rejected the woman every Alpha has been searching for."
Kael's heartbeat thundered.
"Who... is she?"
The elder swallowed.
Before he could answer—
BOOM!
A deafening explosion shook the pack.
The protective barrier surrounding Mooncrest shattered like glass.
Panic erupted.
Warriors rushed forward, drawing their weapons.
From beyond the smoke...
A single figure stepped into the moonlight.
He wore a black cloak stained with blood.
His golden eyes locked onto Lyra.
A slow smile spread across his face.
"There you are..."
He looked up at the woman floating in silver light.
"My Queen."
