2. Consequences

Atropos was prepared for everything but not to see her mother smiling at her. Seeing Nyx smiling at her made her goosebumps. Atropos saw a smile only a few times on her mother's face, and each time it was deadly. "It looks like you have already forgotten your manners, my dear. Luckily for you, I am not in the mood to teach you how inappropriate your behavior was today. But I am warning you, my dearest, if you show me your disrespect again, I won't be benevolent anymore." Coldly said Nyx to her daughter, and at the same time, she made herself comfortable in Atropos's bed. Atropos was surprised. Not just because her mother didn't punish her, but because she never saw her sitting in her bed. Her mother acted strangely, and she knew that this was never a good sign. "From all my children, you are the only one who likes me. That's why I decided to give you a chance to prove that I am right. It's time to choose your side if you don't want to end up like your sisters." "Oh, dear! Don't act as if you are surprised! We both know that you have been aware of my plans for a long time. It's time to stop acting like a dummy when you are not!" said Nyx, seeing how Atropos's eyebrows jumped high. Atropos looked directly at her mother, and she slightly smiled. It wasn't necessary to look like she was in fear when Nyx found out that the whole thing was just a play. "Well, it looks like I don't have to pretend it anymore. Will you tell me how I can prove my worthiness to you?" Asked Atropos, hoping that her voice was cold enough to convince Nyx that she wanted to play according to her rules. Nyx was right about one thing. Atropos knew how treacherous her mother was and that she would do anything to get what she wanted, but what surprised her was that Nyx decided to step out of her shadows so openly this time. So, when Nyx said that Atropos was just pretending to be surprised, she wasn't right. This open move against her sister surprised her because Nyx never complotted so openly. Everyone knew how dangerous Nyx was, and no one wanted to get in her way. She was a narcissistic, cold-blooded, cruel, and perilous manipulator and egomaniac. She never hesitated to use anyone and anything just for her own benefit. As soon as she got what she wanted, she got rid of everyone if the clues would lead to her. The purpose was simple- to gain more power. Atropos saw how dangerous her mother could be when her creatures almost destroyed the Earth. She knew that her mother would never stop, but she never expected that she would turn against her own daughters. Not after she knew how dangerous it could be to play with destiny when all the Gods were banished to leave Earth. But obviously, her mother learned nothing. Atropos was curious what her mother was up to, but when she saw her mother's treacherous smile, she knew that whatever it would be, it would be epic. She was angry when Nyx told her that she planned to kill her sisters. And she was right. When her mother told her what she planned, she knew that her mother must have gone crazy. She quickly clenched her fists. She knew that she shouldn't act rashly, not in this serious situation, but it was hard. More than ever she had to use her skill and pretend that her mother's plan was phenomenal and that she would do anything to help her with her sick plan. After all, she knew that there was something more behind it that her mother hadn't told her yet. When Nyx saw Atropos's clenched fists, she sighed, and she said: "I know that you love your sisters, but you need to understand that they just became your burden. They are too soft to see what is necessary to do, so they always stay between you and your full potential. But…" Nyx looked at another side …" maybe I was wrong about you. Perhaps you are as weak as your sisters!" Atropos sighed, and she lowered her head. It looked like she was seriously thinking about her mother's words, but instead, she was trying to calm herself so her mother would not find out that she was only acting. She raised her head and looked directly at Nyx's eyes when she was calmer. "You are right! I do love my sisters. But no matter how I love them, if I have to choose between being the only Fate Goddess or saving my sisters, it's my responsibility to choose wisely. I will help you get rid of them, but I have one condition. You will not interfere in my job. You let fate in my hand, and you will never ask me about it!" Suddenly, Nyx stood up. She was obviously angry to hear that Atropos had some conditions, but Atropos knew it was too late to take it back. When Nyx saw that Atropos wouldn't take it back, she brightly smiled and got closer to Atropos. She took her in her arms, and she whispered into her ears: "You are lucky that I admire your braveness, but if it happens again, my dear, you would end the same as your sisters!" After those words, she left Atropos standing where she was, and she left as if nothing had happened at all. As soon as she was gone, Atropos sat on her bed and closed her eyes. She knew she might have won the fight this time, but this was only the beginning. Her mother wasn't the person who would quietly accept the defeat. If she wanted to win the war, she had to be strong. Atropos was sure that Nyx would sooner or later let her know the price for that small win. Her hands started shaking. She quickly opened her eyes to avoid the fear, but she didn't expect another vision to hit her so soon after the last one… Atropos didn't know where she was because darkness was all around her. She started to tremble, not because she was scared, but because she felt the coldness. It was the first time that Atropos felt like her whole body was freezing. She had to clench her teeth because they started to chatter. She slowly moved two steps forward, but suddenly she stopped. There was something in front of her. She didn't see anything, she was sure that there was something, but she couldn't say what it was in that darkness. She raised her hand to feel what it was, but suddenly the bright light that showed stopped her, and she covered her eyes. She heard steps which made her curious who was the one that was coming. She tried to open her eyes, but she immediately felt pain from the bright light that made her close her eyes again. She heard a coming scratching and evil giggle accompanied by a horrible smell of rotten egg and sulfur, and soon she heard a screeching voice that made her open her eyes even when it was hurting her. "Look at you! The almighty Goddess of Fate hanging here totally powerless, knowing that she would be bleeding like the pig again and again and no one would ever help her! It's the most amusing image that I have ever seen!" When Atropos's eyes stopped hurting, she saw her sister Lachesis in front of her, but she almost didn't recognize her. Her sister's body was hanging on the chain, and her bare feet barely touched the ground. Her once the most beautiful body was covered by scars. Her face was so pale, and her eyes closed. For a second, Atropos thought that her sister was dead, but then Lachesis opened her eyes, and at that moment, Atropos's heart stopped. She clenched her fists in anger because her sister's eyes, once full of life, were now empty. Atropos knew that Lachesis lost the will to fight in that second, but how did it happen? Her sister was one of the most powerful Goddesses, so how did she end like that? Who was behind it? Atropos didn't have to wait long to get the answer to her question because as soon as she turned around, she finally found out who was the one that dared to hurt her sister. It was the witch queen herself! Atropos was so surprised that she stepped back with a shaking head. The witch queen stood in front of her sister holding the harpe, and Atropos saw how the blade slowly approached her sister's skin. The witch queen started slowly cutting her sister's skin in various places. Some wounds were deep, and Lachesis's whole body was soon covered in blood. Just looking at this torture was so painful that Atropos closed her eyes, but only for a second because she realized that the last thing she could do for her sister was stay with her the whole time. Who knows how often the witch queen tortured her sister like that, and still, her sister didn't make a sound. She knew that the whole thing was only her fault because she was the one who let the witch queen leave alive back in time when she had to kill her.  Lachesis will be tortured and dies because she tried to change her fate. The reality hit her, and Atropos's legs started shaking. The truth was so devastating that she fell on her knees, and soon the first tears came out.
