CHAPTER 1: THE SCHOLARSHIP GIRL
---
Part 1: FIRST DAY AT SEOUL ARTS HIGH
8:00 AM. Seoul Arts High School.
Ji-woo stood at the gates.
Uniform too big.
Shoes scuffed.
Bag from the market.
Everyone else had Louis Vuitton.
Cars waiting.
Drivers bowing.
A girl whispered: "Who’s the country bumpkin?"
Another: "Probably a scholarship kid. Ew."
Ji-woo ignored them.
Head high.
She earned this.
100% scholarship.
Top scores in the whole country.
She walked in.
BAM.
Ran straight into a wall.
A very tall, very solid wall.
In a perfect uniform.
"Watch it," a cold voice said.
Ji-woo looked up.
And up.
And up.
Kang Tae-oh.
Chairman’s son.
Student Council President.
King of Seoul Arts High.
Black hair. Sharp jaw.
Eyes like ice.
He looked at her uniform.
Her shoes.
Her bag.
Then walked away without another word.
Ji-woo’s face burned.
Great. First day and the Crown Prince already hates me.
---
Part 2: THE CLASSROOM
9:00 AM. Class 3-A.
Ji-woo sat in the back.
Quiet.
The door opened.
And he walked in.
Tae-oh.
Everyone stood up.
"Good morning, President-nim!"
He nodded. Sat in the front.
Didn’t look back once.
Teacher smiled. "Class, we have a new student.
Park Ji-woo. She’s on full scholarship. National top scorer."
Silence.
Then whispers.
"Scholarship? Here?"
"She won’t last a week."
Ji-woo bowed. "Please take care of me."
Tae-oh didn’t clap.
Didn’t even look.
After class, girls surrounded her.
"Hey, scholarship girl," the leader said. Yuna.
Popular. Pretty. Tae-oh’s "almost girlfriend".
"Don’t get any ideas, okay? This school is for people like us."
Ji-woo just smiled.
"I’m just here to study, Yuna-ssi."
Yuna scoffed and walked away.
---
Part 3: LUNCH TIME HUMILIATION
12:00 PM. Cafeteria.
Ji-woo had her lunchbox.
Kimchi. Rice. Egg.
From her halmoni.
She sat alone.
Then Yuna’s group came.
With their trays.
Sat right next to her.
"Ugh, what’s that smell?" Yuna said loud.
"Kimchi. So low class."
They took pictures.
Posted on the school forum:
"SCHOLARSHIP GIRL EATS TRASH"
People laughed.
Pointed.
Ji-woo’s hands shook.
But she kept eating.
Then a shadow fell over her.
Tae-oh.
With his tray.
He sat down.
Right across from her.
The whole cafeteria went silent.
"Is there a problem?" he asked. Voice cold.
Yuna panicked. "N-no, President-nim! We were just—"
"Then eat," Tae-oh said. "Quietly."
He started eating.
Like nothing happened.
Yuna and her friends ran away.
Ji-woo stared at him.
"Why... why did you do that?"
Tae-oh didn’t look up. "Because it was noisy."
"Oh."
Silence.
Then he pushed his milk to her side.
"I don’t like milk."
And walked away.
Ji-woo held the milk.
Warm.
---
Part 4: AFTER SCHOOL. RAIN.
5:00 PM.
It was pouring.
Ji-woo didn’t have an umbrella.
Or money for a taxi.
She stood under the school gate.
Getting wet.
A black car pulled up.
Window rolled down.
Tae-oh.
In the back seat.
No driver. He drove himself.
"Get in," he said.
"What?"
"Get. In. You’ll catch a cold."
Ji-woo hesitated. Then ran in.
Soaked.
Silence.
Only rain.
"Where do you live?" Tae-oh asked.
"Gangbuk. Small apartment."
Tae-oh’s jaw tightened.
He drove.
At her building, he stopped.
"Thank you," Ji-woo whispered.
Tae-oh handed her his jacket.
"You’ll get sick."
"But—"
"Take it," he said. Then drove off.
Ji-woo stood there.
Holding a Crown Prince’s jacket.
Smelling like him.
---
Part 5: THE RUMOR
Next day.
The whole school was talking.
"Tae-oh gave her his jacket!"
"They were in a car together!"
"The scholarship girl is seducing him!"
Yuna cornered Ji-woo in the bathroom.
"What did you do to him?!"
"Nothing!"
"Liar! Stay away from him!"
She shoved Ji-woo.
Ji-woo fell.
Hit her head on the sink.
The door opened.
Tae-oh.
He saw Ji-woo on the floor.
Blood on her temple.
And Yuna standing over her.
His face went blank.
Then furious.
"What did you do?" he asked. Quiet.
Yuna started crying. "She fell! I didn’t—"
"Get out," Tae-oh said.
Yuna ran.
Tae-oh knelt.
Checked Ji-woo’s head.
Careful.
"Can you stand?"
"Ne..."
He picked her up.
Like she weighed nothing.
Carried her to the infirmary.
All the way, he didn’t let go.
And whispered:
"Don’t cry. I’ve got you."
Ji-woo cried anyway.
But not from pain.
---
Part 6: NIGHT. TEXT MESSAGE.
10:00 PM.
Ji-woo’s old phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
_Unknown: This is Kang Tae-oh.
Don’t go to school alone tomorrow.
I’ll pick you up. 7 AM._
Ji-woo stared at it.
Read it 10 times.
Then typed back:
Me: Why?
Reply came in 1 second:
Tae-oh: Because you’re annoying when you’re hurt.
Then another:
Tae-oh: And because nobody messes with my classmate.
Ji-woo smiled.
Held the jacket to her chest.
Outside, it was still raining.
But inside, Ji-woo’s heart was warm.
The Crown Prince noticed her.
And nothing would ever be the same.
