6 AUGUST 2017 Emily sat on her small balcony where she had balanced a dining chair on the mesh floor, trying to avoid the legs falling into the gaps. Munchkin sat in her lap, purring, as Emily browsed through her book and enjoyed the sunshine. She was reading Edgar Allan Poe, and she was trying to tell herself that it was because she had received a recommendation and not because she was curious about what made Rowan tick. Her phone beeped from the safety of the solid kitchen floor. Holding the kitten close in her lap, Emily put her book down on the threshold and reached for the phone. The message was from Rowan.
