Chapter 33Georgia opened her eyes. The room was dark save for a greyish light filtering through the clapboard, hinting at predawn. One glance around the room confirmed she'd been left alone, at least for now. Then she realized that she was no longer on the floor, but on the bed with that dirty wool blanket over her. The vision of his arms lifting her up and holding her next to his body made her cringe. Pain in her left side brought back the memory of her predator's attack, and her laboured breath increased her discomfort. Everything hurt; her face, ribs, and her perpetual pounding head. But a smile played at her lips. The girls had escaped. That thought was quickly replaced though with the fear of them out in the wilderness at night. Georgia pushed it from her mind.
