CHAPTER THIRTEEN
‘I’ve brought Veronica home for dinner.’ Their father looked nervous as he walked into the lounge room, followed by a slim woman with a rather horsy face.
Callie picked up the remote to click off the television, exchanging a quick glance with El. They hadn’t seen much of Veronica since she’d come into their father’s life, which suited them just fine. Callie suspected the feeling was mutual, even though on the face of it everyone was always friendly and polite.
‘Hi, Veronica,’ she said now, with the pretence of a smile. Although the movie had taken her mind off her own problems for a while, Callie still couldn’t stop shivering. She felt emotionally and physically exhausted, and ill with grief. All she wanted was some time out to process everything that had happened, and
