Suspicion clouded the guard’s face. ‘Please!’ Callie begged, determined now to see this through. ‘I will wait here until he comes.’ The guard heaved a martyred sigh, and disappeared briefly through the entrance to summon someone to stand watch over her — a man wearing the garb of a peasant. ‘Just keep an eye on her,’ he instructed. ‘Don’t let her in.’ Bewildered, Callie looked after him as he disappeared into the courtyard beyond. A familiar voice caught her attention. Her heart began to thump as she strained to hear the words. ‘I don’t … Elaine …? But I’ve never … Lady Charlotte? No, I …’ ‘Lancelot!’ Callie shrieked. The voice stopped. The guard reappeared, shaking his head. ‘Lancelot!’ Callie cried again. The guard stepped aside, and gestured towards her as another figure appeared
