Chapter 1: A second Chance Meeting
Amber Jonathan took a deep breath, clutching the worn leather strap of her purse as she stood in front of the towering glass skyscraper. Scot Enterprises. The name gleamed in silver letters above the entrance, a symbol of wealth, power, and a world she had no business stepping into. But she had no choice. Her savings were running low, and ever since the preschool she worked at shut down, she had been struggling to find stable employment. When she saw a high-paying nanny position listed for a private client, she jumped at the chance. The job description was perfect: live-in nanny for a five-year-old girl, excellent salary, benefits, and a room in one of the city’s most luxurious penthouses. Amber wasn’t expecting much when she applied. She certainly wasn’t expecting to be called for an interview. And she definitely wasn’t expecting to walk into the past she had spent three years trying to forget. She followed the receptionist’s directions to the top floor, her heels clicking against the marble flooring. When she reached the massive office door, she hesitated before knocking. A deep voice from inside made her stomach flip. “Come in.” Amber pushed the door open—and her heart nearly stopped. Sitting behind a sleek black desk, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, was Eliot Scot. The same Eliot Scot who had once stolen her breath away with a single touch. The man who had disappeared from her life after one unforgettable night. His dark brown hair was neatly styled, his chiseled jaw clean-shaven, and his piercing gray eyes locked onto her with a flicker of recognition. For a split second, neither of them spoke. Then, Eliot leaned back in his chair, his gaze sharpening. “Amber Jonathan.” His voice was unreadable, cool and measured, but she caught the slight flicker of surprise in his eyes. Amber’s pulse pounded. This wasn’t just any job interview. This was his job interview. His child. Her mind screamed at her to run—to come up with an excuse and get the hell out of there—but she forced herself to keep her chin high. She needed this job. She straightened her spine. “Mr. Scot,” she said, keeping her voice calm. “I didn’t realize you were the client.” A muscle ticked in his jaw. “I didn’t realize you were the applicant.” Amber swallowed hard. “Should I go?” There was a pause. A long, tense pause. Eliot’s gray eyes flickered over her, assessing. Finally, he exhaled sharply and leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. “Sit.” She hesitated before lowering herself into the leather chair across from him. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The air between them crackled with unspoken words, with the weight of their history pressing down on them. Eliot was the first to break the silence. “So, you’re looking for a nanny job?” Amber nodded. “Yes. I was a preschool teacher before the school closed. I have years of experience working with kids.” She kept her voice professional, even as her heart pounded. His fingers tapped against the desk. “And you didn’t think to mention our history?” She met his gaze squarely. “I didn’t think it was relevant to the position.” A humorless chuckle escaped him. “Didn’t think it was relevant?” His eyes darkened. “We spent a night together, Amber. Then you disappeared.” A sharp pang shot through her, but she kept her expression neutral. “It was years ago, Eliot. I didn’t expect to see you again.” His jaw clenched, but he didn’t push further. Instead, he leaned back, his gaze turning calculating. “I need a nanny for my daughter, Lily. She’s five. Smart, independent, but… struggling after her mother left.” Amber felt a pang of sympathy. So he had been engaged. Or married. That was a part of his life she had never known. “I understand,” she said softly. “I can help.” Eliot studied her for a long moment, his expression unreadable. “Are you sure you can handle working for me?” Amber met his gaze, willing herself to stay strong. She needed this job. No matter how complicated things got. “I can handle it,” she said firmly. Eliot’s lips pressed together, and for a moment, she thought he might refuse. But then he nodded slowly. “Fine,” he said. “You start tomorrow.” Amber released a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. Tomorrow, she would be stepping into Eliot Scot’s world once again. And this time, she wasn’t sure she’d make it out unscathed.
