CHAPTER 10: THEY WERE NEVER MY PACK

677 Words
The truth did not scare me. It changed me. I stood straighter, my breathing steady as the weight of everything settled into place, because if what I saw was real, then nothing I believed about myself had ever been true. “They lied to me,” I said quietly. Kael did not answer. But his silence felt different now. The elders stepped forward again, their fear now mixed with urgency. She couldn't leave, one of them said. I turned towards them slowly. “Watch me,” I said. The power inside me responded immediately, rising without resistance, no longer unstable, no longer confused. You do not belong here, the elder said. I held his gaze. I know, I replied. The voice inside me spoke again. This was never your home. I took a step back. No one stopped me. Not because they did not want to, but because they could not. As I turned to leave, the voice said one last thing. And now…they are coming for you. I froze because this time it did not mean the pack. It meant something far worse. The warning did not fade after it was spoken, and instead, it settled deeper into my thoughts, carrying a weight that felt real in a way I could not ignore. I remained still, my eyes fixed ahead, but my awareness shifted outward, searching, listening, sensing for anything that did not belong. The forest around me felt different now. Not peaceful, but watchful. A faint unease moved through me, subtle at first, then stronger, as if something beyond my sight had already taken notice of me. I took a slow step forward, my senses sharpening with each movement, and the ground beneath my feet felt more defined, every shift clear, every sound distinct. This was no longer about the pack. Whatever was coming, it was something else entirely. Behind me, I could feel them still standing there, uncertain, hesitant, but no one tried to follow. That alone said enough. They feared what I had become. But this, this was different. The voice inside me did not speak again, but its silence felt intentional, as if it was allowing me to face this part alone. A faint sound broke through the stillness, distant but clear enough to catch my attention. My body reacted before I could think, every sense focusing in that direction as a quiet tension built within me. I did not run. I did not hide. Because whatever was coming, it was not searching blindly. It knew exactly where I was. A faint shift in the air pulled my attention forward, subtle but impossible to ignore, as if something had crossed into a space it had not occupied before. I remained still, not out of hesitation, but because every instinct told me to observe before acting. The silence around me changed. It was no longer empty, but occupied. My eyes moved slowly across the forest line, scanning every shadow, every gap between the trees, searching for movement that did not belong. Nothing revealed itself, yet the awareness did not fade. If anything, it grew stronger. A quiet certainty settled in my chest. I was not alone. Not in the way I had been before. This was different. Whoever or whatever had noticed me was not reacting to chance, It was following a purpose. I took another step forward, measured and controlled, allowing my senses to guide me rather than rushing into uncertainty. The ground beneath me felt steady, but the air ahead carried something unfamiliar, something that did not match anything I had encountered before. Not the pack. Not a predator. Something else entirely. My breathing remained even, but my focus sharpened as the realization settled deeper. This was not a warning. It was an approach. And whatever was coming, it was already close. A steady breath left me as I straightened slightly, no longer uncertain, no longer waiting for answers to come to me. If something had been watching, then it had seen everything. And that meant this was only the beginning.
