Chapter 1
Caz and Frankie are running from the gigantic, massive boulder that is rolling towards them which was set off by one of the oldest fashion booby trap that was ever made, you know the one: where you leave something on a stand to replace the treasure that was there before; and it triggers something else to happen. So Caz managed to take the treasure from its stand in the center of the cave and, well she should have known better, since all the other traps were cliché as well as pretty much useless but alas she was too tired to focus let alone listen to Frankie’s warnings. So now they are on the run, with the treasure in Caz’s hands, jumping over triggered traps and sliding under fallen plates. It was a race to the door because if the traps are as cliché as this, they know that the door at the entrance is closing to lock them in. On the bright side at least this treasure was a small gem which is easy to hold compared to the last one they had to get which was a huge, ugly statue made of gold or something like that. They have found so many “treasures” that nothing blows them away anymore except for the hunt and of course the pay.
Oh, let me fill you in a bit before we get back to the race. Caz and Frankie work for “Find It Inc.” a treasure hunting company where clients go and hire them to find treasures that they cannot find themselves or are too big of a coward to even try. Hey, why do it yourself when you can pay someone to do it for you? Caz has a lot of answers for this and Jo (their other co-worker who is currently looking for another treasure) disagrees with all Caz’s “flipping awesome points, bra” as Caz so maturely puts it. Frankie does not have the heart to tell Caz that her points are actually… rubbish but Jo finds freedom in relaying this information. But a job must be done and pay must be received so that is why they do what they do. At least this time they did not have any competition from T.
T is a woman who is also a treasure hunter except she does not hunt for treasure she tries to steal it from them so she is more of a treasure thief. ‘Why?’ I hear you asking, well to put them out of business. ‘Is that it?’ No one knows actually, maybe a grudge, maybe revenge, maybe a huge master plan or ‘T’ is just being difficult and that IS it. So ‘Find It Inc.’ gets the client, gets the treasure, gets the pay and on to the next one. They have been doing this for plus/ minus three years and seem to be quite good at it, at least according to their own blogs.
Any way back to the action…
Caz and Frankie are running side by side with Caz slowly losing her breath; she was not as fit as she once was. Frankie turns to look at Caz and says:
“Why am I running?” so she stops running and the boulder goes through her and she reminds behind it and begins to walk slowly to the entrance of the cave. Frankie is a ghost so she can’t die or get hurt but she sometimes forgets that. Wishful think you could say. While Caz can get hurt but she cannot die. I mean she can but it is difficult to kill her without killing Dylan.
Caz remembers what she is and places the gem in her mouth for safe keeping as she transforms into her wolf form and gains speed to run out the entrance. She slides under the door with the bits of tail hair getting caught under it.
The sun hits her face as her eyes adjust to the colorful surroundings that are super bright and, as they expected, ‘crassshhh’ the boulder has hit the closed door. Frankie walks thought the close door and Caz pulls her tail from the door, removing a few hairs in the process. They begin their walk to back to the office which is a long way away plus they ran out of fuel so it is going to take longer.
Oh, yeah, so Caz is a werewolf and Dylan is her boyfriend and he is a winged man. Caz is unlike Jo (who is also a werewolf but can be more easily killed) because long ago when Dylan and Caz were dating for about three years or something they were under attack and Caz was badly wounded, close to death; that her soul was leaving her eyes and Dylan being Dylan was like “Nope”. So he managed to divide his own soul in half to give to Caz so that she may live. The side effects are that she can change the size of her wolf form while other werewolves cannot and she can only die if Dylan does. Dylan being a winged man can only get killed at a certain point. You see winged people are invincible and they have this ability to make themselves exploded and come back together after the explosion. This explosion is land covering and is only used as a last resort because of how deadly it is. But if the winged person is shot or stabbed before they are back to being fully reformed pre-explosion they will die. But reformation is a quick process so only master shooters take the shot. Oh, some have succeeded, it has happened… but it rarely does.
So there you have the brief background of ‘Find It Inc.’ And like any treasure hunters there are many stories to tell but I shall begin with this one. ‘Find It Inc.’ has not just to find one new treasure but three. Well… in the beginning at least. So let us beginning:
Caz and Frankie, finally, managed to get back to the office and they walk into the foyer to grab a set. Caz goes to grab a change of clothes since hers ripped when she transformed and not one has figured out of to invent ‘non-rip’ pants or shirts. Frankie is sitting down on a couch with the gem next to her (don’t ask how she is able to sit, it is ghost logic) and notices a burnt looking Jo sitting across from her. Jo is staring in front of herself with her big light green eyes never blinking. Her face, clothes and skin is cover in black dust hence her looking burnt. Caz comes back to the foyer and stops in between the two females.
“You guys having a staring competition? A stare off?” she asks while flopping down on the couch next to Jo.
“Not that I know of,” replies Frankie without taking her eyes off of Jo’s. This slowly becomes a bit awkward until…
“So… how was it Jo?” quizzed Caz,
No reply from Jo,
“Did you…win?” asked Caz,
Still no reply.
“We…got a …little gem…” said Caz in a desperate attempt to start up any communication with Jo.
“I…” began Frankie before Jo interrupts, “Shut up you guys, I’m trying to mediate”
“Really? How? Here? Kind of a rubbish place to meditate” said Caz with Frankie nodding in agreement.
“It was fine before you guys came. And yes I did win as you so ‘brilliantly’ put it” and wit that Jo reaches into her pocket and pulls out a small golden coin. Not any golden coin but the ‘Witch’s Memory’ which was sought after by Thomas. The coin has old writing engraved on it with a creature on one side of the coin while on the other is the number three. This little treasure was a bit of a mission to get to but Jo’s story is for another day.
The three treasure hunters tell their tales and then, as you do in any office, wait for something to happen. They wait. They make coffee. They play of their phones. They play on each other’s’ phones. Jo cleans up. Caz takes a nap. Then, finally, the Bosses arrive. The Bosses are arguing so much that they do not even notice the waiting treasure hunters. Caz, Jo and Frankie look at each other and follow the Bosses into their office. They are still going at it while Jo, Caz and Frankie are sitting like innocent school children at the principal’s office while their drunken mother is trying to defend them on what she knows nothing about. Jo tries to listen in on what the fight is about but the Bosses speak in a forever changing code that it makes it difficult. Frankie has given up trying to understand the Bosses’ fights while Caz’s ADHD killed in and she is wondering if dust dances or it only floats. There is a brief pause in the argument. Boss J looks at the three hunters and Caz awkwardly waves at her. Boss K is pacing around in circle with her red cheeks creating a heat wave.
“And?” says an unimpressed Boss J to the hunters.
Boss K starts the argument again thinking that the question was addressed to her. Boss J says nothing, moves nothing, does nothing until Boss K runs out of breath. After a slight pause J turns slowly to K and asks, very slowly so that the weight of every sound sinks in and grabs your heart “Why wouldn’t I be speaking in code if I was speaking to you?”
K sits down looks at the hunters and mimic’s J’s “And?”
The hunters take out their treasures which they hand over to K. K locks it away in a safe and put a spell on it so no one can break in without getting a curse. A moment of silence passes between the five people. Caz blurts out “So what was that all about?”
Another pause resumes much to the loud annoyance of Caz. Jo is just playing on her phone while Frankie is playing with her own fingers.
“We will talk tomorrow.” J breaks the silence which gives the three a slight jump scare. They get on their way as J and K watch them leave. Frankie wave’s good bye as K acknowledges. The three go their separate ways home since tomorrow is a new day and all of them are dead on their feet, Frankie literally so. They were too tired to talk about the awkwardness and plus they just want food, batt, bed maybe all at once if need be.
Caz arrives at her building and the main door is closed. She takes the key but has to wiggly the door and key around for something to happen. This takes a while but finally the assuring ‘click’ of the lock is present and Caz enters. The lift is broken so Caz takes the stairs; I mean they are only on the sixth floor, no big.
Caz walks into her apartment with Dylan who is relaxing on the couch reading a book. Nothing can take away the feel and smell of old-fashion book reading. Caz flops down with her face in his lap as he begins to stroke her hair.
“Long week?”
“Huuummm, duummm” says Caz without moving from her spot.
“Tea?”
Caz nods her head in his lap and he moves her head up to replace his lap with a pillow for her to lie on. While Dylan is making tea he receives a call from his work which he ignores. The call comes again, and again. But Dylan only answers it after the tea is ready and in front of Caz. Dylan stands there listening to the voice on the other side without saying a work (He didn’t even say ‘hi’, how rude) while Caz takes a slip of her tea and watches the twitches of Dylan’s face. He puts down the phone and sits beside Caz on the old couch lifting his cup of lukewarm tea to his beard covered lips.
“And?” speaks Caz.
Slight silence spreads through the room, it is not uncomfortable or awkward just the sound of being tired (Caz) and drained (Dylan).
“Work. You want to swap jobs?”
“We’re not allowed to, but yes I would.”
