The CEO's Secret Bride
Chapter 1: The Billionaire's Proposal
Amara Collins tightened her grip on the cardboard box holding the last remnants of her life. A cracked coffee mug, a sketchbook filled with unfinished dreams, and a small framed photograph of her and her late mother were all she had left after being laid off.
Outside the office building, rain poured relentlessly, soaking the pavement and turning the city into a blur of gray. She stood beneath the awning, staring at the envelope in her hand—the official termination letter.
"I'm sorry, Amara," her manager had said only minutes earlier. "The company is downsizing. This isn't about your work."
It didn't matter why. The result was the same.
No job.
No income.
And rent due in five days.
Her phone buzzed.
Landlord.
She hesitated before answering.
"Miss Collins," the harsh voice said, "if the rent isn't paid by Friday, I'll have no choice but to change the locks."
"I just need a little more time."
"You've already had extra time."
The line went dead.
Amara swallowed hard, forcing back tears. She couldn't afford to fall apart.
Not now.
Her phone buzzed again.
This time, it was the hospital.
"Miss Collins, we're calling regarding your grandmother's surgery. The deposit is still outstanding."
Her heart sank.
"I know," she whispered. "Please... just give me a little longer."
"We can only postpone the procedure for so long."
The call ended.
Amara leaned against the wall, closing her eyes.
Everything was slipping away.
An hour later, she wandered into a small café to escape the rain. She ordered the cheapest cup of tea on the menu and sat near the window, sketching absentmindedly in her notebook.
Drawing had always calmed her.
People fascinated her, and she captured them with quick pencil strokes.
She didn't notice the tall man in the black suit watching her from across the room.
His tailored coat, polished shoes, and quiet confidence made him impossible to ignore.
Yet he wasn't looking at anyone else.
Only her.
After several minutes, he walked over.
"Miss Amara Collins?"
She looked up, startled.
"Do I know you?"
"No."
"Then how do you know my name?"
Instead of answering, he slid a business card across the table.
Damian Blackwood
Chief Executive Officer
Blackwood Global Holdings
Her eyebrows rose.
She had heard of him.
Everyone had.
The youngest billionaire CEO in the country.
Powerful.
Untouchable.
Feared.
"What do you want?" she asked cautiously.
"I have a proposal."
"I'm not interested in investments."
"It isn't an investment."
He took the seat opposite her.
"I want you to marry me."
Silence.
Amara blinked once.
Then twice.
"I'm sorry..."
"I wasn't joking."
She laughed.
It was the only reasonable response.
"You must have mistaken me for someone else."
"I didn't."
"I'm unemployed."
"I know."
"I can't even pay my rent."
"I know."
"My grandmother is in the hospital."
"I know."
The smile vanished from her face.
"How do you know all that?"
His expression remained unreadable.
"I make it my business to know."
A chill ran down her spine.
"That's... unsettling."
"It is thorough."
She pushed the business card back toward him.
"I'm leaving."
"You'll receive ten million dollars."
She froze.
"...What?"
"For one year."
She slowly turned back.
"A contract marriage."
He placed a thick envelope on the table.
Inside were legal documents.
Everything looked genuine.
"I need a wife," Damian continued.
"My grandfather's will requires me to marry before my thirty-third birthday to retain control of Blackwood Global."
"And why me?"
"You meet my requirements."
"What requirements?"
"You have no criminal record."
"You aren't connected to any wealthy family."
"You have a clean public reputation."
"And unlike the women constantly chasing my name..."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"...you don't know how much I'm worth."
She frowned.
"I know you're rich."
"You don't know how rich."
She shrugged.
"Does it matter?"
For the first time...
The corner of Damian's mouth lifted ever so slightly.
"No."
He slid another paper across the table.
"If you agree, ten million dollars will be transferred immediately."
She stared at the number.
It could pay for her grandmother's surgery.
Her debts.
A new apartment.
Everything.
But something felt wrong.
"Why me?" she asked again.
This time...
He didn't answer.
That evening, Amara visited the hospital.
Her grandmother smiled weakly from the bed.
"You look tired."
"I'm okay."
"You've been crying."
Amara looked away.
Her grandmother reached for her hand.
"You've always carried the world's weight on your shoulders."
"I don't know what to do anymore."
Her grandmother squeezed her fingers gently.
"Whatever choice you make..."
"Choose hope."
The next morning, Amara stood outside Blackwood Global's towering headquarters.
Glass.
Steel.
Luxury.
Everything about the building screamed power.
Inside, assistants greeted Damian with nervous respect.
He walked through the lobby without slowing.
When he reached the private elevator, he turned.
"Have you decided?"
She took a deep breath.
"I'll do it."
He nodded once.
"No regrets?"
"I don't have the luxury of regrets."
His assistant handed her a pen.
She signed.
Damian signed.
The contract was official.
As the assistant gathered the paperwork, Damian quietly said,
"Welcome, Mrs. Blackwood."
The words felt unreal.
She had just married a man she barely knew.
Hours later, the bank notified her that ten million dollars had been deposited into her account.
She paid the hospital immediately.
She paid her rent.
For the first time in months...
She could breathe.
But peace didn't last long.
That night, Damian drove her to Blackwood Manor.
The massive gates opened automatically.
The mansion looked more like a palace than a home.
As she stepped inside, she admired the elegant staircase, marble floors, and priceless artwork lining the walls.
Then she stopped.
At the end of the hallway hung an old framed photograph.
A little girl.
About eight years old.
Smiling brightly.
Amara's heart skipped a beat.
The girl...
Looked exactly like her.
Before she could move closer, Damian stepped in front of the portrait.
"That part of the house is off-limits."
"Who is she?"
"It doesn't concern you."
"But she looks—"
"I said..."
His voice turned icy.
"It doesn't concern you."
He walked away.
Amara glanced back one last time.
Something about the photograph stirred a memory she couldn't quite reach.
A forgotten childhood.
A face.
A promise.
And a secret buried for years.
As Damian stood alone in his study upstairs, he opened a locked drawer.
Inside was another photograph.
It showed the same little girl.
On the back were handwritten words:
"Protect her... no matter what it costs."
Damian closed his eyes.
"They've finally found you," he whispered.
"And this time... I won't let them take you again."
End of Chapter 1.
Cliffhanger: Who is really after Amara, and why has Damian secretly been watching over her for years!
