Her eyes widened when the person who had physically removed Dustin from her vicinity straightened. What was he doing there? He never came to Bonnie’s parties. Lucy screamed and ran over to Dustin “What the f**k is wrong with you?” Lucy asked leaning over the boy who was trying to sit up.
“It was just a punch Luce, boys’ play. Don’t make a big deal out of it.” Bonnie rolled her eye still amazed by the fact that Cade had shown up at her party “It’s boys playing. Right Cade?” She asked hopefully but Cade ignored her.
His eyes raked the faces blankly until they landed on Paige’s. She bit her lip to stifle a gasp at the anger and annoyance his gaze held. When his eyes darkened, she stood up immediately and left the room but nobody was paying attention to her too engrossed in Cade and his unusual demeanor.
“Can I get you a drink? I have everything. Beer, vodka, whisky…” Bonnie asked and started to curl her hand around his arm. He flicked her off and followed in the direction that Paige went.
Paige walked as fast as she could through the crowded rooms searching frantically for Nancy. When she stepped out, she finally sighted her near the pool in her underwear and she was laughing her heart out.
“Nancy!” She shouted but she did not seem to hear. She started walking toward her when she saw the person that had made Nancy drop her books on the first day. He was in shorts and he was lunging at Nancy.
She saw it too late to be able to warn her. The boy ran toward her, held her by the waist and threw both of them in the pool. “Oh no.” Paige whispered under her breath as she ran toward the pool, worry making her brows knit together. Why had she not come up yet?
“Nancy!” She yelled as she neared the pool and gasped in surprise when Nancy resurfaced wrapped all around the boy. No, she wasn’t just wrapped all around him, she was kissing him. Was she drunk? “Nancy.” She called and the girl broke away in surprise then smiled when she saw Paige.
“Hey, what’s up?”
“I am about to leave. Do you still need me to drop you off?” She asked quietly
“I will drop her off.” The boy offered and Paige blinked at him. He was grinning at her, his hand still hanging on to Nancy’s waist possessively
“Can I please talk to her alone?” Paige asked and he looked at Nancy who pulled away and swam to the edge of the pool. Paige squatted to be able to talk to her “Are you okay?”
“I think so why?”
“I just thought you didn’t like him.”
“Caius? I didn’t but I realized what he lacked in manners, he makes up for in s****l prowess.” She giggled airily.
“I…are you drunk?”
“Am I saying esophagus, right?”
“I think so.”
“Then no.”
“Are you sure?” Paige looked across the water at the boy that was swimming backward while looking at them.
“Very. I will be fine.”
“All right. I will go ahead then.”
“See you Monday?” Nancy asked and Paige nodded and then stood up. She wanted to send Caius a warning glare but was afraid it would be more amusing than dangerous so she settled for not paying him any mind.
She had to get out of there anyway.
She was already in the backyard so she didn’t bother going back in. Instead, she passed through the side of the house and headed to the front.
As she passed through the dimly lit garden patch, a hand banded around her mouth to prevent her scream from escaping as the person pulled her into an area devoid of any light. She knew who it was even before she looked up at him.
“What the f*ck were you trying to do?” He asked the moment he let go of her mouth.
“I don’t understand.”
“You were going to f*cking kiss him? Him?”
“We were playing a game and I…I…” she shook her head again. Why was she trying to explain herself to him anyway?
“You what?” He asked.
“What does it matter to you anyway?”
“What?”
“It’s not like we are in a relationship or anything. You haven’t even talked to me in a week.” She glared at him.
“Is that why you decided to kiss someone else?” He asked and she looked away from him because she did not think she could utter her next words if he continued staring at her like he was keeping himself from pouncing on her.
“Who I decide to kiss and whatever else I may do is none of your business.” She told him and tried to walk away but he caught her by the waist.
“Listen to me Doll and listen really well. You are mine. Do you know what that means? It means if another f*cker dares to touch you, I might just kill him. Understand?”
She swallowed and did not bother trying to still her wildly beating heart. She of course did not understand. She did not understand how she was his when he was not hers. She did not understand why he was behaving this way. It wasn’t like he liked her. Did he?
“Do you…” she swallowed “Do you like me?”
He weighed the question for a tense second “I don’t know about liking you but I am crazy attracted to you. Being anywhere in your vicinity makes me think things, want things,” one of his hands slid to the back of her neck and he yanked back on her making her hair look up at him “dirty, dirty things.” His breathing became irregular as his mouth sought hers and her eyelids closed of their own accord.
In a split, last-minute decision, she turned her face away and his kiss landed on her cheek. Pulling back, he looked at her in question.
“I want to go home,” She asked and she squirmed when he spent almost a minute studying her expression. Just when she had had enough, he pulled back taking two steps away from her.
“Fine. Let’s go.” It was not a request but she treated it as one
“I can get home myself.” She protested but he acted like he had not heard her and led the way around the house.
