CHAPTER1
It was raining heavily, with storms and thunder that made it impossible for Frank to make the last delivery for the day.
Although he was only soaked with a bit of rainwater, he was shivering so much.
He had managed to keep the motorcycle under a shade to prevent the rain from causing any damage to the items he was supposed to deliver. As he waited patiently for the rain to stop falling, his phone at the back of his pocket began to ring and it was his boss, from the GPS at the office, the boss could see that Frank had stopped and as well the boss was quite aware of the rain.
“Frank why are you stopped?!” the man shouted at the other end of the phone
“Sir, it’s raining over here and-“
“What sort of stupid excuse is that?” the man shouted “So because is raining you won’t do your job?” the man asked with a raised voice “Put on your raincoat and drive to make that delivery right now!”
“Sir I am-“
“Shut up! I don’t want to repeat myself” The call ended
Frank was still recovering from a cold, and entering under the rain could at best worsen his condition, already he was sick with running nose and headaches but he had to resume work to make money that he could use to surprise his wife during their anniversary which coincidentally fell on the birthday of their son, so it was a double celebration and he needed money to fund it.
He turned on the engine of the motorcycle and it roared, driving away from the shade to deliver the item to the customer who ordered it.
On reaching the hotel, the manager was grim with anger seeing Alex kill the engine of the motorcycle, she did not expect that he would take that long but not only that, the delivery man was drenched with water and his hair was disarranged making him look unkept and nothing but a peasant
“You are late!” the lady shouted
“The rain delayed me, I am sorry ma’am,” he said apologizing, although he was only two minutes late to the agreed delivery time, Frank got down from the motorcycle to open the storage box attached to the motorcycle
“I don’t need it anymore” she blurted out
“What?”
“Take it back to your company, I made an order from another company,” the lady said looking down at her wristwatch impatiently
“Please ma, now that the other one hasn’t arrived please use this one”
“I said take it back, I would rather wait” The woman shouted in a stern voice. She is the manager of a popular hotel in the country, suddenly one of the doors had jammed and the keys were locked inside the room, there wasn’t a spare so, therefore, the hotel needed a replacement as quickly as possible.
After much pleading from Frank to the manager, he even had to kneel to her because he didn’t want his boss to cut off his salary, the manager allowed Frank to make the door knob replacement, and as Frank walked into the hotel he was being looked at like he was a piece of trash, first his muddy and worn out shoe and his cheap thrift cloth
“What is such a person doing here?”
“I can not believe people do not know their place and where they belong”
The workers at the hotel spoke among themselves as they scanned Frank from head to toe
“Manager Sheila, who is that man? He can’t afford our services, should we walk him out?”
“Oh, he is not here to patronize us, he is here to fix the bad door” the manager clarified and it only made sense to them as they heaved a sigh of relief “Show him the door and ensure you keep an eye on him” the manager instructed
Frank carrying with him the spare door knob for the replacement, walked behind one of the staff at the hotel
“The man who cheeked into the hotel is a blind old cargo” the male laughed starting a conversation but Frank said nothing in return
However, minutes later Frank got to work to replace the broken door knob, with the key card he was able to unlock the door, inside the room was an old man seating inside the room, it was the old man’s fault that the door knob malfunctioned well spoilt at first.
“Sorry to disturb your solitude moment old man” the male staffsaid raising his nose in a disgustful manner because he was aware that the old man couldn’t see “We are here to fix your door”
The old man nodded once and acknowledged their presence. This certain old man had been in the hotel room for some weeks now, he was rich to the extent that he always had bundles of cash kept anywhere in his room, the hotel staff whenever they did room service, knew that he was blind, usually steals the cash from him.
While Frank was working, he watched the male staff steal the bundle of money that was on the chair, he was about to shout but the staff gestured with his hands to shut him from talking, he continued his work without saying a word, even he was left all alone with the old man but he concentrated on fixing the door and tried not to look at the stale of dollars littered in the room
“Son?” The old man cleared his throat “I am blind and cannot see, can you help me with a glass of water?”
“Sure” Frank replied standing to his feet and leaving the door to the water dispenser to help with the water, even on the dispenser there was a bundle of cash on it, but Frank paid no attention to it as he filled the cup with water.
The old man gulped down the glass of water, Frank saw the wristwatch he was wearing, and no doubt that it was pure gold he wished deep down that he could afford a wristwatch like that but he knew it was merely impossible given that he was still trying to earn money to survive and couldn’t afford such luxury.
“Thank you,” the old man said and he stretched his hands to give Frank back the cup, as Frank got closer, unbeknownst to him, the old man slipped his gold wristwatch into Frank’s pocket that way he just might finally accomplish his mission, the old man had waited so long to be fulfilled, although he had all the money in the world, there was still something he wanted so dearly as time ticked and time was no longer on his sides!
