1. So it begins
Kayleigh could point to several instances in her life where she was sure she was at a cross roads but this was not one of them. She only saw one way now, and it was toward having a life. She had always wanted to put down her own roots and she could start now. With her new job. She fought back a smile as she got out of her car and started toward the front entrance of one of the tallest buildings in all of Chicago, Export IO. It was one of the biggest export companies in all of the country and she was the new Assistant Financial Analyst. Her first real job and she had gotten it all by herself, no interference by those nosy ladies or her mother.
“Miss Murray?” A man who looked to be at least ten years older than her asked the moment she got into the building and she nodded, his grin was infectious. “Hello. I am Bryant Peterson. Your secretary.” He offered his hand and she took it appreciating the firm grip.
“Hello.” She replied simply wrapping her head around the fact that she had a secretary.
“I have been at the company for two years now, so I have been tasked with showing you around and helping you get settled in. If you would just come this way, I will show you to your office.” He offered, leading her toward the elevator.
As they made the journey to the twelfth floor where her office was located, he explained the basic hierarchy of the office. She realized she was a little lower down the ladder than she would have liked, but that was fine for a first job and she would make sure to climb the ladder in the shortest possible time.
By the time they reached the glass doors of her office, Bryant had done a brilliant job of explaining everything to her and she was ready to tackle the challenges that this new world had to offer. “Can I get you anything? Coffee, tea?” Bryant questioned, but she shook her head examining the files on top of her new desk.
“No, thank you.”
“Alright. We have a meeting by ten a.m. sharp and permit me to say that you are lucky.”
“How so?” She asked with a raised brow.
“Mr. Wesley is around.” He beamed.
“Mr. Wesley like the owner of the company?” She questioned and he nodded. “I thought you said he only dropped by a couple of times a year.”
“He does. Which is why you’re so lucky. He is attending the meeting today.”
“That is a good thing?” She thought people hated their bosses showing up.
“Oh yes. Mr. Wesley is nice. Well, not nice, nice,” he frowned as if recalling a memory, “but he is reasonable and damn is he a sight to look at.” She raised a brow at the blush that had risen on his cheek. She had not pegged him as being gay, so it surprised her. He probably swung both ways. “Anyways, I will be right out here if you need me." Bryant said, and she nodded and waited until he left to settle into her chair.
She was happy, she realized. She had not been happy in a while, but right at that moment, even though it felt wrong and selfish to feel that way, she was feeling so good, she could dance. The feeling did not last long as an aura enveloped her. A certain dread filled her mind as she recognized it. It was the aura she got when her ‘destiny’ started to call. She hated it. It had been bearable when she had someone to share it with, but then, it was awful. Not having felt it in a while, the feeling plummeted her good mood and she started her first day of work distracted and puzzling over why the feeling was suddenly coming back after years of being dormant. She hoped it was just a fluke. It had to be. Without her, Kayleigh could not do anything and she was still missing, so it had to be a fluke. Unconsciously, her hands pulled out the ruby hidden under her dark purple shirt and she began to fumble with it, seeking solace, but it did not come and, in the end, she put the feelings aside and began to crunch numbers. She would not let her other life affect this new one. If she wanted to climb the social ladder, she would have to impress her boss and what better day to do that than when he was around.

He did not particularly like this part of his job description, Sky admitted to himself as he shrugged on his jacket. He much rather preferred leading people on battlefields than navigating the capitalist economy of the human world. But if he wanted his pack to survive the turbulent times, they needed funds, so he needed to keep all the companies running. He was not surprised when he sensed Chris walking into his hotel room. “Did you need something?” Sky asked, putting on his cuffs without turning to Chris.
“Yes.” The words held the usual annoyance and frustration that was beginning to sound normal to Sky. He had spent the better part of the first ten years of his rule trying to get Chris to put aside their differences but his beta did not seem willing and he had given up trying. “Raya brought reports of some spies across our eastern border.”
“Malik or Lydia?” Sky asked, calling the names of the two Alphas who probably hated him and his pack the most.
“Raya suspects Lydia.”
“And you?”
“I am not the Alpha. It does not matter who I suspect.” Chris answered with words ripe with meaning. Sky ignored it.
“I think it’s Lydia too. Malik is more calculated. If he was spying, we wouldn’t have found out this easily.”
“What should we do about her then?”
“Nothing. She will get tired eventually.” Sky sat to put on his shoes.
“Are you kidding? Nothing? An enemy is scoping us out and you want us to do nothing?”
“Lydia is checking to see if we have breaks in our defense. We don’t. She will retreat and do it again some other time. We just have to make sure she never finds any weaknesses.”
“Or we could shut her down.” Chris suggested, and at Sky’s look, he gritted his teeth. “Fine, Alpha.” He spat out and left the room.
Sighing, Sky surveyed his three-piece suit in the mirror and adjusted his tie. He was not the type to wear a tie under normal circumstances, so every time he put one on, it took a few minutes to adjust. “Alpha. It’s time.” Abby, the CEO of Export IO told him from outside the door and he nodded. Time to get the show on the road.
He tensed all over the moment he neared the building. She was here somewhere. She was… “Stop the car.” He ordered and the driver slammed down on the breaks. He was out of the car before the car was fully immobile.
“What’s wrong?” Abby asked him but he could not answer. His heart was beating too fast, his mind racing, he turned around in an attempt to pick up the scent again. It was not difficult. He followed it blindly, unsure where he was heading. It was not until he was racing up the emergency stairwell of the building, that he realized he was in his own building. Millions of questions ran through his mind as he all but fled the stairs. Was she here all along? Was he ready to meet her? Was she ready to meet him? Who was she?
He reached the landing of the twelfth stair and her scent hit him like a mountain, turning his insides to mush. He had to take a deep breath before he opened the door so he wouldn’t break it down. He tried to control his stride but it was one of the most difficult things he had ever done not to run.
And then he opened the door and scanned the room. He found her in milliseconds and his heart stopped in his chest. She was his.
She smiled lightly at him and his thoughts screeched to a halt.
Damn.
