As the breeze hit her face, she wore a beautiful smile on her face. The buildings and the gentle breeze of the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport greeted them as soon as the plane landed, reminding her that it was just the beginning of her beautiful journey. “This place is more stunning in person than in the photos.” She murmured as she dragged her suitcase onto the concrete, and her Mom followed her just a few steps behind her. Abby couldn’t wrap her head around the fact that she was finally away from her nagging and abusive father and that a chance had just been thrown at her feet, a chance to shape her future. “Yes, I have only been here twice to visit your aunt Mitchell, but I must admit that a lot of things have changed.” Her Mom Emma chirped in, looking as excited as her daughter Abigail. Abigail Daniella was a seventeen-year-old confident, vibrant, and passionate plus-sized girl who lived an ordinary life with her mother and her father before finally fleeing to North Carolina after her father turned abusive and a drunkard. People were scattered everywhere, some of them patiently waiting for their departure, while some seated around, waiting for their loved ones to pick them up, and that day, Abby's aunt Mitchell was picking them up from the airport. They were to spend the night at her place before finally moving into their new house, the following day. She had at least one day to prepare for school. Abby had so much anticipation on her mind, and after researching her new school, Parkhurst High School, she was not only excited but anxious to know if the school was as good as she had read about and if she was going to make any friends, considering she had barely made any friends her entire life while she was still at her home city. A few minutes later, her aunt Mitchell pulled up, she was excited to see both of them as it had been years since they last saw each other, “What are you feeding her? She is growing so fast like a watermelon; she is almost twice my size!” Mitchell exclaimed, and Abby frowned. She was used to people mocking her size but that coming from her aunt was demoralizing. “Yeah, I know right? Watching kids grow up is a tricky business for a parent. It is a long and short process all at once. It was just the other day when her feet we so little, she will be turning eighteen next year.” Her Mom responded, ignoring her sister’s earlier remark. “Yeah, you are right. Abby, you love it here?” “Yes, I love it already, I just hope my new school will be as lovely as this town.” “Oh, don’t worry about that, My daughter graduated senior year from Parkhurst and I have never heard her complain. So, I am sure you will love the school, it is a nice school. A friend of mine teaches English literature there.” She commented as she carefully overtook a few cars on their way home. When they got home, Mitchell prepared food and they ate before retiring to bed. The following morning, Abby and her Mom took a cab to their new place, it was fully furnished, and cleaned all thanks to Mitchell who cleaned it before they got to North Carolina. “Mom, do you think I am fat as a watermelon like Aunt Mitchell said?” Abby asked her Mom later that night as they were having dinner. She had been thinking about her aunt’s remark the entire time and tried so hard to brush it off but wouldn’t get it off her mind. She was losing confidence in her own body, and she felt like maybe her Aunt was right about her body, but was it her fault that she was fat and round? “Abby, how many times have I told you not to ask me such silly questions? We have had this conversation more than enough times already. You are just seventeen and in your teenage years, everything will be okay as you grow up and you won’t be chubby anymore. Can we talk about something else? Perhaps if you have everything you need for school?” “Yes, I have everything ready and waiting, I am excited about the school.” She replied adamantly, not wanting to piss her Mom off. “Good, because that school is good, but I am not sending you there, paying all that school fees for you to go and play at school. You are going to read and you are going to read hard and bring home good grades, are we together?” She asked and Abby nodded her head absentmindedly, she was busy on her phone. “Yeah, okay Mom.” “Abby?” “Yes, Mom?” ‘What did I say about using your phone while eating?” “I am sorry, I was just checking out something.” She apologized as she swiftly put the phone back on the table. “Give it to me!” “Mom!” “Yes, give it to me, Abby.” She said with a serious tone, and Abby had no otherwise than hand over her phone, she knew better than to argue with her. The following morning, Abigail woke up at exactly six, she headed straight to the shower, she had at least thirty minutes to get ready. As she was busy struggling to zip up her dress, it got stuck on a piece of thread, and when she pushed further, the dress tore apart, and she sat on her bed, tired and angry. She started asking herself why she wouldn’t just be like other teenagers, with a slim figure and a nice body. And then remembered her Mom’s often words, “You have been through a lot my love, and let no one tell you otherwise, I am sure when we change the environment you will cut some weight, You have been sick and in the most uncomfortable home, everything will be good with time.” She sighed and went over to her closet, She settled for a pair of black tights, a black skater skirt, and a sky-blue pull-neck. “Abigail! Abigail!” Her Mom’s shrill voice cut her trail of thoughts, she quickly threw her books in her bag, picked up her phone and threw some black boots on before running downstairs. “What took you so long? You know I have to be at work as early as 7.30 and you are just wasting time, what happened to the dress that you chose for school today?” she asked, surprised to see her in a different outfit. “It tore, I was trying to pull up the zipper and it got stuck then just tore, plus it was too tight.” She complained as she slothfully slumped on the dining chair. “Again!” Her Mom exclaimed. “It is not like it is my fault that I am fat.” She muttered under her breath. “What did you just say?” Emma who was tired of her daughter always using her size as her excuse turned to look at her daughter. “Nothing, can we just go?” Abby asked, it was clear that she was pissed and wanted to be as far away from her Mom as possible. “You are not taking your breakfast?” “No, I think I am good.” “Okay, your loss then.” Emma who was used to her daughter always throwing tantrums said as she picked up her handbag and walked out, she was using one of her sister’s cars until she was able to get her car. The drive to school was a silent one, with Abby’s face buried in her phone and her Mom’s eyes on the road. When they got to school, Abby got out of the car and started walking away until her mother called her back. “I don’t know what you think you are or what you think you are doing but you are not the first chubby kid in this world, I am still your mother, so don’t treat me like a stranger because I am the only true person you have, so, do me a favour and stop sulking.” “I am sorry, Mom.” “Good, I will be off from work at 4.30, I will pick you up then,” Emma said before she drove away. Abby slowly walked to the school premises, and to the principal’s office, she was directed to her class, and given a map and a list of all of her classes for the week. As she walked to her locker, she felt like she was simply dragging her feet, They were heavy and so was her body, everyone was looking at her like she had just snuck into earth, muttering under their breaths, and giggling behind her back. She quickly walked to her class, and luckily the teacher was not yet in, the only empty seat was next to a chubby boy, She walked towards him and gently pulled the seat before anyone else could make hurtful comments. “I finally got a neighbour, Hi, my name is Jake.” The boy introduced himself, he was bubbly and welcoming. “My name is Abby, Abigail Daniela, nice to meet you, Jake,” Abby replied as she got out her books and carefully placed them on the table. “Your first time?” Jake asked after a few minutes. “Yes, and you talk too much.” “Sorry.” He apologized and got busy on his phone. A few minutes later, a group of boys walked in, and from the look of things, the tall, handsome boy was the crew leader. “Oh, look who has here, Jake finally found himself a match, What is your name fatty?” the leader asked Abby and the rest of the class laughed, giggling and making fun of her. “Don’t worry about him, he is a d**k, always making fun of people and getting away with it, his name is Lucas Wyatt, the school’s hottest playboy, he plays basketball, and his father; owns half this school,” Jake whispered. “Yeah, I am starting to think this semester is not going to be as great as I thought it would be,” Abby muttered under her breath but before Lucas could say anything else, the teacher walked in. “Okay, Lucas, enough of your drama, I know you all have met Abby, she is our new student, Welcome Abby, and I hope they have been treating you well.” He asked as he nibbled something on the whiteboard. “Don’t worry Mr. Charles, I will take good care of her, she looks like she needs the gym,” Lucas commented and everyone laughed. “Okay, everybody shut up and open up your books, We are continuing from where we left off.” The teacher said, and everyone stopped laughing, getting back into the books. The rest of the day went on well until Abby’s Mom came to pick her up.
