“How was your first day at school? I am sorry I didn’t get to ask you yesterday; I was so tired from work; my new boss is something else.” Emma asked her daughter the following morning as they were getting ready to leave. “Nothing good to talk about, Mom. I will stay late at school to catch up with where the rest of the class is, so can I get some money for a cab, and lunch, too?” She asked unbothered, and her mom nodded. “Sure, but you don’t want to talk about your first day at school? Come on.” Emma insisted, and Abby sighed deeply. “Mom, what is the point of telling you that I was bullied by a hot playboy and that his father owns half the school?” “Well, at least I know what happened at your school, don’t worry though; everything will be okay soon, they will get tired of that and leave you alone.” She said as she poured more coffee for her daughter. “Easy for you to say, have you ever been bullied because of your body size?” “Yes, I was just like you in my junior and senior high school, but when I got to college, things started changing and I decided to hit the gym, how do you think your father won me over?” She asked, a smile on her face. “You joke way too much Mom, and I get it. You are trying to make me feel better but you are only making me feel worse, don’t worry though I am okay with this body, I have been bullied my whole life and I think I am used to it now, I no longer cry when someone calls me fatty or chubby, the money please, Mom?” she asked stretching her hands. “Okay, I won’t say another word, here is the money, and call me when you get to that cab, I don’t want anything to happen to you.” “Okay mom, I will be turning eighteen soon, and I hope I don’t get to deal with your uncertainties ever, I am off to school, Mom.” She said as she pushed her chair back, and grabbed her bag. “And where do you think you are going? I am taking you to school, you have to wait for me.” “No Mom, I have already called for a cab, I will call you in the evening.” She said and kissed her mom on the cheeks then quickly ran out of the house, she got into the car before it sped off. When Abby got to school, she met Jake in the hallway, he was the only friend she had made, so they both walked to their lockers in silence. “How was your night?” Jake asked as he pulled out a book from his locker. “Good I guess, I am slightly behind you on the syllabus, so I wanted to stay behind and do some reading on my own.” “I can help you catch up to where we are right now, if you are willing?” “Oh, thank you. You can do that? For free?” “Of course, it is nothing.” “Okay I spoke to my Mom, I already told her I would be late.” “That’s okay, you can come to my place.” “Thank you, let me grab my books then we can head to class together,” she offered and swiftly sauntered to her locker. Abby then got a text before she could get to her locker, she hurriedly fished out her phone, scrolling through her phone, she didn’t realize that Lucas was walking through her direction, also busy on his phone. The two bumped into each other so hard, Lucas’ phone fell down while Abby’s phone went flying across the lockers. “b***h, watch your step, you almost knocked me over, do you know how much this phone costs? You are lucky there are no cracks.” Lucas said as he reached down to grab his phone, and when he turned up, he came face to face with a terrified Abby, she was fidgeting, and breaking her knuckles, forgetting she also had her phone, luckily for her, Jake came to her rescue and picked it up for her. Lucas burst out laughing, and when Abby tried to get away from him, he pulled her back, “damn, you probably weigh more than two-hundred, what are you feeding on? Rocks? Or perhaps sandstones, you are to fat to be walking down this hallway anyway, you will cause a m******e down here, and probably earth tremors, watch your steps next time or I will be forced to run you over, and drain all that fat from your body.” He said with a smirk and everyone else burst out laughing, some were already taking videos of Abby and Lucas roasting her, she felt so destitute. With tears welling up in her eyes, almost blocking her vision, she had no otherwise than to ran away, to avoid more awkwardness and people making fun of her, “yeah, there you go, carry your legs to the ladies and cry your eyes out, big fatty Abby.” Lucas shouted as she quickly ran to the bathroom, everyone laughing at her and calling her names. “Abby! Wait, your phone.” Jake called, trying to reach her but she was faster. He couldn’t go to the ladies, so he sat at the door, waiting for her to come out. When Abby got to the washroom, she found an empty stall and quickly got in, locking the door behind her, she cried her eyes out, constantly blowing her nose and rubbing her red-stricken eyes. About ten minutes later, she walked out of the stall, and to the mirrors, she checked herself out and almost started crying again, deep down, she knew Lucas was right, she was too fat for her age but nothing she did worked out for her. She remembered one time when her father called her fat, she starved herself for almost one week hoping she would cut some weight but it only got worse when she was hospitalized. Nothing could work for her, not even the gym, or so she thought. She washed her face, and tried her hands using the paper towel then walked out. The bell had rung a few minutes back, but Jake was still waiting outside, with her phone and her bags, in her hands. “I am sorry.” He said as he handed her the bag and her phone. “Why are you sorry?” Abby asked as the two walked to class. “For the way he treated you, you have to grow a thick shell in order to put up with his insults because he is not going to stop, he has bullied me for the longest time now, and it doesn’t bother me anymore.” He said as he increased his stride, trying to catch up with her. “Okay, but it is not as easy as I thought it would be. When I came here, I thought everything will change but it is just my second day, and things are not as cool as I had projected, it is going to take time.” She muttered. “Yes, but you will eventually get used to it, look at me now; I am no longer bothered by what he says.” “How do you do it?” “Do what?” “Act like this is not happening?” “Easy, you just let them say what they want to say and you assume it is a bad dream that you will wake up from and everything will be okay, but don’t worry, you have me, I will always have your back.” “Thank you, Jake.” “Don’t thank me yet, now let us go to class before we miss out everything.” He said with a smile on his face, Abby managed a smile before she walked right behind him as the duo walked to class, fortunately, the math teacher was late and Lucas was busy on his phone, so they weren’t made fun of until lunch break. “Have you ever thought of going to the gym?” Abby asked Jake as they were having their packed lunch at the basketball court on one of the benches. “Yes, and even tried working out with my brother every morning, but nothing changed, so, I gave up and just accepted my body the way it is.” Jake replied unbothered. “You have a brother?” “Yes, he plays football for the national team, very dedicated, and not fat as I am. What about you? You have any siblings?” “No, I am the only child, looks like we are the unlucky ones.” She responded as she munched on the piece of chicken. “Maybe you should minimize on taking fatty foods and focus on eating salad, that way you will cut some weight.” A random girl commented as she walked past them, and Abby dropped the piece of chicken, folding her fists in anger. “Don’t mind her, just be you, and everything will be okay.” Jake said, calming her down. The rest of the lunch was silent and even the afternoon classes, Abby said nothing, she was lost in her own world. “Hey Abby, I have been calling you for the past minute, are you okay?” Jake asked that evening as they were getting ready to go home. “Oh yeah…I am sorry, I was kind of zoned out, everything okay?” “Yes, I was asking if you are still up for tutoring, my driver is here to pick me up, he has somewhere else to be so if you are coming with me, we have to go right now.” “Yes, I am still up for that.” She said as she threw her backpack on her shoulder, and followed Jake. “Come on,” Jake called her out as he stood next to sleek orange Bentley continental. “Is that your drive home?” Abby asked stunned. “One of many, come on; we don’t want to keep him waiting, he has somewhere else to be.” Jake said as he opened the door for her, Abby got in carefully and fastened her seatbelt. “Wow, this car is mad beautiful, what does your father do again?” She asked happily. “You will ask him when you meet him.” Jake said as he fastened his seatbelt and the engine revved before they drove off.
