Chapter 3

When the car stopped in front of a tall gate, Abby's mouth was still hung open, wondering what else she didn't know about Jake and his mysterious rich family. "What else don't I know about you?" She asked as she stepped out of the car and followed Jake behind. "You just met me, trust me; there is a lot you don't know about me yet." He said as he pressed the doorbell a young, beautiful woman with a uniform opened the door, and her smile widened when she saw Jake. "Hi…Jake, I have never seen you bring a friend home, hi…" "Abigail," Abby responded. "Come on in, you are welcome." She said as she ushered both of them to the house. Jake immediately walked to his room, leaving Abby behind. She was served a glass of juice as she waited for Jake. The house was an expensive one, and Abby was dazzled by its lavishness. Every corner was adorned with exquisite decor, from chandeliers dripping with crystals to intricately carved marble fireplaces. High-end appliances and state-of-the-art technology seamlessly blended into the surroundings, ensuring both style and convenience. "Come with me upstairs, there is a study room," Jake announced, cutting short Abby's trail of thoughts and admiration. "These plush velvet sofas invite you to sink into their comfort, I love your house." "Thank you, but there is more upstairs, I wish this wasn't a school day, I would have taken you on a house tour, but for now, I have to do the tutoring and finish on time so you can go back home unless you want your Mom to worry about you." He noted as he opened the door to his study room, it looked like the school library, with different books neatly arranged on the shelves, everything in the room spoke of elegance. "No, you are right, the earlier we do this, the better," Abby replied, taking her mathematics book from her backpack. Jake tutored her for almost an hour, going through what they had previously learnt and doing their homework together. At around six in the evening, Abby suggested it was time for her to go home, Jake walked her downstairs and they met his Mom on their way out. "Oh hi, Jake has never brought any friend home, what is your name?" "Mom!" Jake cut his Mom short, and she shrugged. "It is true though, you must be his new friend." "My name is Abigail, Abigail Daniela and yes, we are…friends." She stuttered not knowing the best place to describe her relationship with Jake. "Nice to meet you, Abby, it is rare to see my son bring home any friends, why don't you stay over for dinner?" "I would love to but my Mom will be worried about me, next time maybe." "It is okay, I understand that. Then let my driver take you home, to make sure you are safely at home, don't say no please, it is the least that I can do." "Thank you, Mrs Wood." "No problem, just call me Tricia, and more often than not, he is a lonely kid." She added that Jake pulled Abby with him outside, he didn't like it when his Mom always referred to him as a lonely kid. "She loves you, why are you mad?" Abby asked as soon as they stepped out. "She is just doing that to make me look like I am lonely, I have video games." He blubbered and Abby shrugged. "It is not bad to be lonely, I am too. You are the only friend I have made in years, so yeah I am not embarrassed." Abby urged and Jake sighed. "Yeah okay, we will talk more tomorrow, I hope you caught something from what we discussed." "Yeah, you are a good tutor, you can make a great teacher in the future." She complimented him, and Jake smiled a genuine smile. When Abby got home, her Mom was waiting for her on the front porch. "And where have you been? I have called your phone countless times, you made me worried. Who's car is that, because that doesn't look like a cab." "Hey Mom, one question at a time. That was my friend's car, I mean his Mom's. He offered to tutor me on what they learnt previously, and his Mom insisted I be dropped home, I couldn't say no, and sorry my phone was on silent." "Okay but come back here and talk to me." "I have nothing else to say to you, Mom. I have had a bad day today and I would like to freshen up, maybe talk after I'm done with my shower?" She shouted as she walked upstairs to her room. A few minutes later, she appeared in her sweats, she wore a smile on her face. "What makes you so happy? You do know that we have rules, right?" "Yes, and I am sorry I didn't inform you about my whereabouts, it might have slipped my mind, I am sorry." "Apology accepted, next time send me a text. So how was your day at school?" "The same, rough. I was fat-shamed again but it's okay." "I am sorry, I wish I could take your position but just know that I love you." "Yes, I love you too, Mom but I just learnt that bullying won't stop unless I lose weight." She muttered silently and Emma reached for her hands, squeezed them reassuringly and planted a soft kiss on her cheeks. "I will always be here for you, no matter what. I love you, Abigail." She whispered, pulling her into a tight embrace. The following morning, Emma dropped her daughter at school before she drove off to work. Jake was not yet at his spot, so Abby pulled her hood cap on and swiftly walked to her desk. She settled, fishing out her phone, she started scrolling through and her video with Lucas was the first to appear on her feed, it had so many comments about her weight and sadly, most came from her fellow girls. Devastated, Abby threw her phone back in her pocket and got out one of her storybooks that she intended to read before the teacher came in. A few pages into reading, Abby felt a presence beside her, she turned to look thinking it was Jake only to come face to face with Lucas, she exhaled sharply, fuming with anger but was able to compose herself. "What do you want from me, Lucas? Aren't you satisfied with the damage you have done?" "I am sorry about that. I had time to think through what I told you yesterday and I wish I could go back in time and unsay what I said but that is not possible. I just came here to tell you that I am sorry for what I said, and I would love for us to be friends." He said, and Abby stared at him for a few seconds, trying to figure out if he was joking or telling the truth, and one look on his dead serious face, she knew he was not joking, but why would he be apologetic to her when she didn't even ask him to apologize. "Let me say I believe you, which I don't, why would you want to be friends with someone like me? I don't belong to your class, Lucas and we all know that." "Don't you think I know that already? I just want to make the impossible possible, and who knows? we might be best of friends for all we know, just say yes and I am not demanding forgiveness from you, but I was just asking if we could be friends." He asked politely and Abby almost laughed it off. Judging from the look on his face, she held herself back and sighed. "Okay, but the damage you have done can't even be undone, everyone now calls me a fatty, what are you planning to do about that?" "I am working on it, just will have it pulled down." "Okay, and what about those who have already saved the video?" "I know my way around, you just have to trust me." He said and Abby shrugged. "You deal with that, and once everything is pulled down, I might rethink being friends with you." She said with a straight face, Lucas smiled and kissed her on the cheeks before he walked back to his seat, winking at her. "What was that about?" Jake asked as he pulled his seat. "Lucas asked if we could be friends, he even promised to pull down the videos." "Lucas and forgiveness in the same sentence? That is new but maybe he is a changed man, just be careful, I don't trust him." Jake said. "Neither do I, where were you?" "I had an appointment that I couldn't miss but I am here now." "It is nice to have you around, I was starting to feel lonely already." "I missed you too, just don't fall for Lucas' tricks, he is not to be trusted." "I don't trust him but I am giving him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he is starting to learn that violence doesn't always work." She replied defensively. "That is a big maybe, just be careful around him." "I will, I am not that dumb," Abby replied.
