Once in Budapest, Irina found a driver willing to transport them into Ukraine for a substantial fee. They’d fed the driver a complete story, that Michael was a famous archeologist, as proven by his papers, on his way back to his dig team, that he was bringing along his partner and their daughter to show them a bit of Ukraine’s beauty, starting with the town of Mukachevo with its castle and gothic cathedral. The driver had fallen for every word.
Going across the border was always slow and the line of cars was long, but they eventually made it to the guard station.
