“Mummy!!!” A black-haired girl with blue eyes dashed at high speed to her mum, who managed to dodge her, albeit narrowly. “Marinette Leroy!” A red-haired, blue-eyed lady shouted as she cuddled the sucking baby in her arms tightly. “Mama! Adren….! He’s bullying me! Wahhhh!!!” Little Marinette screamed with tears watering her lovely blue orbs as she held onto her mum’s skirt. The red-haired lady sighed in annoyance as she looked down at the quivering figure. Using her free hand she patted the little girl who stuck to her skirt like a tick on her head softly, which seemed to work as Marinette finally calmed down. “Mama…she’s lying….” Adren said with a soft voice and his droopy green eyes looking down at his feet, making it look like he had been greatly wronged. Janet sighed again, these kids….she had been so happy about having twins but now she was really reconsidering it. Had having twins always been this hard? It was totally unlike the picture-perfect plan that she had made up in her mind when giving birth to them. Marinette was the older twin but behaved nothing like that. She was bratty, clingy and very harsh with her words and Adren wasn’t any better, he was very hot-tempered and even the slightest thing was enough to annoy him and make him do nasty things. There was once, Marinette had made fun of his drawing and, just like that, Adren tore her drawings and Marinette, not wanting to be outdone, smashed his car toy into many pieces and if Janet hadn’t swiped in by the time she did, her kids would have gone bald by pulling off each other’s hair. “Okay, you go first, Mari” Janet said, while putting down the now sleeping baby in his cradle. “H-he called me a moron!” Mari wailed. “Do you even know what that means?!” Adren said while glaring at Mari, making her shrink into her mum’s skirt while making faces at him. “Enough Adren, I didn’t give you permission to speak” Janet said with a glare. “Yes mum” Adren answered while pouting, his plump cheeks puffing up, making him look like an annoyed panda. “Why did you call her name Adren?” Janet asked. “She said that I was a nerd and that nerds are ugly! So I said that if I was ugly and smart, then she was a beautiful moron!” Adren shouted while stamping his feet in annoyance, earning a glare from Janet which made him stop. Janet nodded her head in disapproval at both of them, making their countenances fall. Still shaking her head, she bent down to their height and gave each of them a kiss on the forehead, making them stare up at her with a confused look. “I-isn’t mama…?” Adren paused as he stared as he looked up to Janet. He was confused as to why she was not scolding him just as much as his sister was. “Listen Mari, calling Adren ugly was wrong, you know? I’m his mother and, since I gave birth to him, if you say that he’s ugly, then doesn’t that mean that am also ugly? Hm?” Janet asked while poking Mari’s cheeks, making her puff them up in exasperation. “Mama is not ugly but Papa might be and Adre…..ah! Am sorry mama! Really sorry!!” Mari suddenly screamed in anxiety as she saw her mum’s face fall, saying anything about Papa was a taboo in the house and they both knew that. And although Mama had said it didn’t matter, they knew it did to her. Janet was silent for a while before a lovely smile adorned her face as she patted the kids’ hair while saying- “It’s nothing Mari, now both of you apologize for being wrong, and Marinette, it seems I’ll start checking the films you watch on the television. Who told you that nerds were meant to be ugly? First of all, where did you learn to use the term ‘nerd’?” Marinette was silent but her guilty gaze explained itself. She had been watching bad movies again and Mama was going to punish her for it. The thought made her eyes water but she held it in. She was a big girl and big girls don’t cry! “And you Adren, I like how you study bigger words to increase your English, but try not to focus too much on the insulting words, and do please remember that Mari is your sister, adore her a little more! Girls like boys that adore them, so make Mari like you! You too, Mari. Adren is your little brother, try to act like the older one at least once and stop acting like a naughty girl, okay?” Janet said while fondling both children’s cheeks. “Okay Mama!” “Yes” Both kids nodded with such promises in their faces that Janet felt her heart smoothened to butter. “Now give your Mama a big hug and be good kids from now on!” Janet said with a smile as the two children embraced her firmly. *** After finally sending the little troublemakers to sleep, including her baby, Janet sighed as she sat on her sofa whilst picking up the remote controller to put on the TV. But then her hands holding the remote controller started trembling and the remote fell off, making her gasp in shock. Bending down to pick it up, she felt something wet on her hand making her furrow her brows while taking a deep shaky breath as if to calm herself down. Raising her hands, she touched her face to feel it wet with tear drops, much to her displeasure. Opened her mouth in order to let out a breath, she found herself hiccupping uncontrollably instead, as tears fell down her tears like a never ending rainfall. “I’m….crying again” Janet managed to choke out with a smile uglier than crying in a failed attempt to stop her weeping. “How could I….even after all these years! How could I be so pathetic…! So useless….” Janet whimpered while quivering with tears staining her pretty face. Her sobs were put on a pause though when her phone rang. Hurriedly cleaning her tears and coughing in an attempt to better her croaked voice from crying, she picked the call. “Hello?” “Hello madam, we are calling to congratulate you on your success, you’re now recognized as the official assistant of the C.E.O and will be taken to another town in three days. Please prepare. Thank you” “What?!”
