Chapter 4 I CROUCHED BESIDE THE bed and held my breath as I stared at my sister. I tried to listen, to see whether I could still hear the sound of her breathing. I needed some kind of indicator that she was alive, that I hadn’t killed her with my magic. But either she was too tiny, or my heart was pounding too fast for me to hear anything but the racing of my own blood in my ears. I closed my eyes. I needed to move forward, regardless.
