Chapter 9 AS I HURRIED THROUGH the dim corridor, magic coursed through me, pushing at my fingertips, ready to filter out of me should I need it. Up ahead, angry voices grew louder and more aggressive. I didn’t understand how anyone could speak to the High Warlock with such disrespect, knowing who he was and how important his role was in the community. Was the Council here? If so, why? I burst into the front room and faltered. Five people who I didn’t recognize surrounded my father, but they didn’t seem to be hurting him. Not yet, anyway. However, they each had snarls and sneers on their faces, as though they were ready to do something to him, should they find it necessary to do so.
