Chapter 2

Micah hurried through the lobby to a large white reception desk. It had the words Dickson Publishings on it in silver letters. She wasn't sure where to go for her first day, she interviewed for the job last week at the HR Department, which was on the main floor, so she had to pause and ask, which only made her feel like she was wasting more time. "Hi, I'm Micah Rae, I'm a new hiree at the Daily Times. Can you tell me which floor?" She said with a huff. "Hi Micah. I'm Sylvia." Sylvia was a very pretty, tall, slender blond woman, wearing an all white suite that matched the large desk, and the lobby tiles. She could have passed for a model. She had a soft voice, and a friendly manner. She extended her hand to shake Micah's. "I have your pass. Can you show me your i.d.?" "Oh," said Micah, who quickly put down the coffee and opened her bag. She showed the I.d. "Here you go, all set!" said Sylvia. This is your employee pass, Don't lose it, you need it to exit in and out of the building," she smiled. "Thanks," Micah said. The pass was attached to a string that she put around her neck. "Please head to the 23rd floor, room 18. Ms. Hearte is waiting for you." Sylvia pointed to the glass elevators to the right, and she smiled and sat back down in her seat. Micah rushed over to the elevators as a group of people had just got on one of them. "Hold the door!" She yelled as she stepped quickly towards the elevator. She approached just as the doors were closing and saw Mr. Obnoxious staring straight at her with an irritated look from inside the elevator, but he did nothing to hold the door. Micah gave a sigh of annoyance as she watched the elevator doors close in her face. "He could have held that door!" She thought. Looking at her phone she had 3 minutes left to get to the 23rd floor. When the next elevator arrived she was glad to be the only one who got on it. She looked at all the elevator buttons. There was a floor map that showed which companies were on each floor. The 23rd and 24th floors were reserved for the Daily Times. This building is huge, she thought, after noticing that the highest floor was 50, which was Dickson senior's private office. She pressed the button for the 23rd floor and the button lit up. The elevator moved up slowly. Micah had never been in such a tall building before. She watched through the glass as she moved further away from ground level. She felt her fear of heights and claustrophobia kick in at the same time. The elevator eventually moved up into an enclosed shaft, giving her a little relief from the height issue, as she could no longer see the ground, but that didn't help much. The elevator stopped at the 14th floor… "Great!" she said sarcastically and sighed. The stopping elevator meant she'd be further delayed. A handsome, tall, brown skinned man around her age, with a camera strapped around his neck got on the elevator. "Hello", he said politely. As he re-pressed the 23rd floor button. "Hi, I'm Micah," she said. She figured if they were going to the same floor she'd see him often, might as well introduce herself now. "Hi Micah, you're new aren't you," he chuckled. Micah nodded and smiled back, "how can you tell?" "First, I know everyone here, and trust, I'd never forget your face, sweetie. Plus, You've got that new employee look on you. A little too nervous, a little too excited," he smiled. "I'm a bit late, and Ms. Hearte is like my idol, I want to make a good impression. I'm afraid I'm already blowing it on the first day," Micah confessed. "Nah," he smiled, "You'll be ok." "Really?" "Just be your confident gorgeous self," he held up the camera, "Can I get a smile?" he said. Micah smiled shyly. "Stunning." She heard a click. "Now, Do a pose for me, babe," he said backing up and adjusting the lense. Babe? She frowned. "It's Micah, and Is this a fashion shoot?" She said defensively. "Sorry, I'm Elliot," he extended his hand, " 'Belle Magazine, 14th floor," She grabbed his hand briefly. He stepped back and refocused the camera, "I'm with the models all day. Force of habit to take pictures of pretty women, I guess," he shrugged with a smile. "Right," "Hope you don't mind?" he asked pleadingly. "Not at all," said Micah with a grin. Click. "I'm not sure if you'll take this as a compliment but you look like a barbie doll dipped in dark chocolate," he smiled. "I've never heard that before but I'll take it as a compliment!" She laughed out loud. Click. "That smile right there!" Click, click.
