Chapter One
Prologue: The Accident and Lost Identity
The rain lashed against the windshield, a heavy curtain blurring the road ahead. Inside the car, Anita, a bright-eyed three-year-old, played with the doll in her lap, unaware of the tension in the front seat. Her father’s knuckles turned white as he gripped the steering wheel, his jaw set in concentration.
"Almost home, my little princess," he whispered, stealing a glance at her in the rearview mirror. His voice was soft, but worry lined his face as the storm intensified.
Ahead, the curve of the road disappeared into the darkness. Out of nowhere, headlights burst through the rain—an oncoming truck, out of control. The tires screeched against the wet pavement. Her father’s eyes widened with fear.
"Hold on!"
The car swerved, trying to avoid the collision, but it was too late. The truck slammed into them, the impact sending the vehicle spinning off the road. The glass shattered, the world flipped, and everything dissolved into chaos. Amelia’s doll flew from her hands, her father’s voice a distant echo as the car tumbled into darkness.
---
Hours later, the storm had passed, leaving only wreckage behind. The twisted metal of the car lay across the side of the road, smoke rising from the debris.
A woman, drawn by the flashing lights of emergency vehicles, arrived at the scene. Anita’s mother. Her heart pounded in her chest as she stumbled forward, her breath shallow and erratic.
“My husband… my daughter, Anita… where are they?” she choked out, desperation breaking through the rain as she scanned the wreck.
A paramedic approached, his face etched with sorrow. “I’m sorry, ma’am… we found one body, but…” He hesitated. “There’s no sign of your daughter.”
Her world collapsed at that moment. "No!" Her scream tore through the air, and she dropped to her knees in despair. "She has to be here! She has to— She's only a baby, where has she gone.” She said in tears as sadness filled her face. Her whole world was shattered and destroyed. Where would she start from? Her husband and daughter gone? It couldn't be.
But Anita was gone.
---
Some distance from the crash site, a small, frail girl stumbled through the pouring rain, her once pristine dress now tattered and soaked. Her steps were faltering, weak. Anita didn’t know where she was or how she had gotten there—everything was a haze of pain and confusion.
An elderly woman hurried towards her. “Oh dear child! What are you doing here?” she gasped, rushing forward just as the girl collapsed, her tiny body crumpling to the ground.
Panic surged through the woman. “Help! Someone help!” She gathered the child into her arms and hurried toward the nearest hospital.
---
At the hospital, the sterile white lights were too bright, casting harsh reflections off the polished floors. The woman sat anxiously, wringing her hands as she watched the doctors tend to the unconscious child.
After what felt like hours, a doctor finally approached her, his expression somber.
"She’s stable for now," he said, glancing back at the room. "But… the child has suffered head trauma. We believe she’s lost her memory. She doesn’t remember anything—not even her name."
The woman’s heart sank. “Nothing?”
The doctor shook his head. “She’s a blank slate. She can’t tell us who she is, where she’s from… or what happened to her.”
Tears welled up in the woman’s eyes as she glanced at the small girl lying unconscious on the hospital bed. “What do I do? I don't know her from anywhere or her family.”
“I don't think anyone is looking for her either. Poor child.” The doctor said sadly as he shook his head in pity.
“I can't leave her on the streets wandering alone, she could be kidnapped.” She said as she took Anita's little hand and folded it gently.
“I think God is finally giving me a child of my own,” she said in her thoughts. “How could a strange girl just appear at my abode from nowhere. With no identity and she's just a child for that matter, I really should take her in if no one is looking for her. She'll become my daughter.” She thought and smiled softly at Anita. She was such a sweet child and really adorable.
“Then she’ll need a new name… a new life.”
---
Back at the accident site, Anita's mother was still standing in the rain, a hollow ache in her chest. The wreckage of the car was being cleared away, and her husband’s body had been taken. But no trace of her daughter had been found. Her lips trembled as she looked out into the dark, unforgiving night.
“Why? Antonio, why?” Anita's mother weeps bitterly as she looks at her dead husband lying in her front. “This is not what you told me, this was not how we planned it. You promised you'd take care of us and never leave us.” She continued in tears. “Now our little girl is gone, where would I find her? She's just a child and can hardly speak. Where's our baby girl, Antonio? Anita, where are you?” She screamed bitterly in tears.
“I’ll never stop looking for you, Anita,” she whispered, her voice a fragile promise. “I don’t care how long it takes. I’ll find you.”
As the rain began to fall again, she wiped the tears from her eyes, standing tall. "I’ll find you, my little girl. No matter what."
