The forest fell silent.
Not the peaceful silence of nature.
The terrifying kind.
The kind that came just before something died.
Aria couldn't breathe.
Hundreds of glowing red eyes surrounded the silver lake. Massive wolves emerged from the darkness one after another, their black coats blending into the night. Men in dark armor walked among them, each carrying silver weapons etched with ancient runes.
At their center stood the man in black.
Tall.
Broad-shouldered.
His crimson eyes never left Aria.
He smiled as though he had finally recovered something he had lost.
Or stolen.
The silver wolf stepped in front of Aria.
A deep growl rumbled from his chest.
The air around him crackled with silver light.
The man laughed.
"So protective."
His voice was smooth, almost pleasant.
"But you know this battle isn't yours to win, Lucian."
Aria's heart skipped.
Lucian.
So that was his name.
The silver wolf's ears twitched, but he never looked away from the stranger.
"You've guarded her well," the man continued. "Five hundred years is an impressive display of loyalty."
Aria looked from the man to the wolf.
"Lucian..."
She whispered the name.
The wolf's body stiffened.
For the first time, he turned toward her.
His blue eyes widened.
Hope.
Shock.
Disbelief.
It was all there.
"You... know him?" the armored man asked.
"I..."
Aria pressed a hand against her temple.
"I don't know."
The name had slipped out naturally.
Like it had always belonged in her heart.
The man sighed dramatically.
"How disappointing."
He took one slow step forward.
"I hoped your memories had returned."
The wolf roared.
The sound shook the leaves from the trees.
Every enemy warrior immediately stopped moving.
The warning was clear.
One more step...
...and blood would spill.
The man merely smiled.
"Still so dramatic."
---
The ancient scroll floating above the stone altar suddenly glowed brighter.
Silver letters continued appearing across its surface.
The Silver Oath was forged under the first full moon...
Not by kings...
Not by gods...
But by two hearts that freely chose one another.
Aria stared.
The words moved across the page as though an invisible hand was writing them.
The moment she stepped closer...
Another vision exploded inside her mind.
---
She stood beneath an enormous silver tree.
Moonlight poured through glowing branches.
A young man stood before her.
This time...
She almost saw his face.
Dark hair.
Strong jaw.
Kind smile.
His brilliant blue eyes never left hers.
"I don't have a kingdom to offer you," he said softly.
"I don't need one."
"I don't have endless riches."
She smiled.
"I never asked for them."
He laughed quietly.
"What if I lose everything?"
She reached for his hand.
"Then we'll lose everything together."
He slipped a silver ring onto her finger.
"I, Lucian Nightbane..."
The vision blurred.
"...swear that if this life separates us..."
More blur.
"...I will wait in every lifetime..."
Everything shattered.
---
Aria stumbled backward.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
She had never lived that moment.
Had she?
The silver wolf—Lucian—was watching her.
His eyes glistened.
As though he had witnessed the same memory.
"You remember..."
His voice echoed inside her mind.
Not spoken aloud.
Felt.
Aria looked around wildly.
"You spoke again."
No one else reacted.
Only she had heard him.
Lucian lowered his head.
"Only you can hear me."
Her heartbeat quickened.
"How?"
"Because of the oath."
---
The armored man clapped slowly.
"Touching."
His mocking applause echoed across the lake.
"But memories won't save either of you."
He finally stepped into the moonlight.
Aria noticed something strange.
He wore a silver crown.
Not a full crown.
A broken one.
Half of it had been shattered long ago.
The symbol engraved into it resembled the mark on her wrist...
Except black.
"My name," he said with a slight bow, "is Darius Raventhorn."
His crimson eyes gleamed.
"The last king of the Shadow Pack."
Lucian growled.
Darius chuckled.
"Still blaming me for everything?"
His gaze shifted to Aria.
"You should know the truth."
Lucian's growl deepened.
Darius ignored him.
"He has told you I'm cursed."
Aria remained silent.
"He has told you he waited five hundred years."
Silence.
"But did he tell you..."
His smile disappeared.
"...who caused all of this?"
Lucian suddenly charged.
The ground exploded beneath his paws.
He crossed the distance between them in an instant.
Darius didn't move.
Instead...
He caught Lucian's throat with one hand.
Aria gasped.
How?
The enormous silver wolf struggled.
Darius smiled.
"You're weaker than before."
Black energy spread from his hand into Lucian's body.
Lucian cried out in pain.
Silver light and black shadows collided violently.
The earth beneath them cracked.
"No!"
Aria ran forward.
The moment she reached them...
The silver mark on her wrist flared.
A pulse of light exploded outward.
Darius was thrown backward.
Lucian landed heavily several feet away.
Everyone froze.
Darius slowly stood.
Instead of anger...
He laughed.
A genuine laugh.
"So..."
He whispered.
"It really is you."
---
Lucian staggered to his feet.
His breathing was uneven.
The black energy still clung to parts of his silver fur.
Aria rushed to his side.
Without thinking...
She touched his wounded shoulder.
Warmth spread through her fingertips.
The black shadows dissolved.
Lucian's breathing steadied.
His wound began closing.
Aria quickly pulled her hand away.
"I..."
She stared at her fingers.
"I healed you."
Darius watched with fascination.
"The Moon Goddess truly chose well."
One of his generals stepped forward.
"My King..."
Darius raised a hand.
"No."
His eyes never left Aria.
"We're leaving."
Every warrior looked confused.
"Leaving?"
"We've already confirmed what we needed."
He smiled at Aria one last time.
"The game has finally begun."
Before disappearing into the darkness, he spoke quietly.
"Next time..."
"...I'll tell you who really betrayed you."
Within seconds...
The army vanished.
Only silence remained.
---
Aria sank onto a nearby stone.
Everything hurt.
Her head.
Her heart.
Her thoughts.
Nothing made sense.
She looked toward Lucian.
He remained in wolf form.
Watching her carefully.
Waiting.
Always waiting.
"You knew him."
Lucian lowered his head.
"You know what he's talking about."
Silence.
She laughed bitterly.
"Of course."
No answer.
"I almost died twice today."
Still nothing.
"I deserve the truth."
Lucian slowly walked toward the ancient altar.
He placed one paw upon it.
The silver light surrounding the scroll brightened.
Then...
Something impossible happened.
The wolf's body began glowing.
Silver flames surrounded him.
Bones shifted.
Light swallowed his enormous form.
Aria shielded her eyes.
When the light faded...
The wolf was gone.
Standing before her was a man.
Tall.
Powerfully built.
Dark hair brushed against his forehead.
His piercing blue eyes were exactly as she had seen them in every vision.
He wore a simple black cloak that barely hid old scars covering his chest and arms.
One scar...
Ran directly across his heart.
He looked at her with the same sadness she had seen in the wolf's eyes.
"You asked for the truth."
His voice was deeper than she imagined.
Gentler.
Filled with centuries of loneliness.
"My name is Lucian Nightbane."
He took one careful step closer.
"I am the last Alpha King."
Another step.
"And for five hundred years..."
His voice broke.
"...I've been waiting for you."
Aria's heart pounded painfully.
Every instinct told her to run.
Every memory told her to stay.
Before she could answer...
The ancient scroll burst into dazzling silver flames.
New words appeared across the page.
Neither of them breathed as the final line was written.
The second bearer of the Silver Oath has awakened...
The wedding must be completed before the next full moon...
...or both souls will perish forever.
