The Girl with Silver Dreams
The dream always ended the same way.
A silver moon hung above an ancient forest, so bright it turned the world into shimmering glass. Thousands of candles floated through the air like tiny stars, lighting a stone altar wrapped in white roses.
She stood there in a silver gown she had never owned.
Across from her was a man whose face she could never fully see.
His hand was warm around hers.
His voice was deep, gentle, and filled with a sadness that made her heart ache.
"I swear before the Moon Goddess," he whispered, "that no matter how many lifetimes separate us... I will always find you."
A silver ribbon of light wrapped around their joined hands.
It became a glowing ring.
The crowd cheered.
She smiled.
For one perfect heartbeat, she had never been happier.
Then...
A scream shattered the night.
An arrow burst through the man's chest.
Blood stained his white ceremonial robes.
"No!" she cried, reaching for him.
Dark figures rushed from the trees.
The candles went out.
The moon turned crimson.
The man fell to his knees, still trying to smile at her.
"Don't forget me..."
His voice faded.
Everything dissolved into darkness.
---
Aria Vale jerked awake with a gasp.
Her chest rose and fell violently.
The familiar pain settled deep inside her heart—the strange, empty ache she had carried since childhood.
Again.
The same dream.
Always the same.
Always ending before she could see his face.
She wiped away tears she hadn't realized were falling.
"What is wrong with me?" she whispered.
The room answered with silence.
Morning sunlight slipped through the curtains of her tiny apartment. The alarm clock flashed 7:12 a.m.
Late.
Again.
She jumped from bed, nearly tripping over a pile of books.
"I seriously need a new life."
Within twenty minutes, she was rushing through the streets of Ashridge City with toast hanging from her mouth and her long chestnut hair flying behind her.
Cars honked.
People hurried past.
Nothing about the busy city suggested magic existed.
And yet...
The dream still felt more real than her waking life.
---
"You almost missed your shift."
Her manager folded his arms.
Mr. Dawson never smiled.
"I know. I'm sorry."
"You've been distracted lately."
"I'm fine."
"No, you're not."
Aria forced a smile.
"I'm really okay."
He studied her for a second before sighing.
"Just get to work."
She nodded quickly and hurried into the bookstore.
Books were simple.
Books made sense.
Unlike dreams about ancient weddings and men she'd never met.
Hours passed quietly.
Customers came and went.
By afternoon, the strange feeling returned.
Like someone...
...was watching her.
She looked toward the window.
Nothing.
Just people walking outside.
Still...
The feeling wouldn't disappear.
---
That evening, rain began falling.
Most customers hurried home.
Aria locked the bookstore and stepped outside, hugging her jacket tighter.
Thunder rolled across the sky.
She took the shortcut through Blackwood Park.
Everyone said the park was haunted after dark.
She never believed the stories.
Until tonight.
Crunch.
She stopped walking.
Another footstep echoed behind her.
Crunch.
Slow.
Heavy.
She spun around.
No one.
Only swaying trees.
The wind grew colder.
Crunch.
This time it came from her left.
"Who's there?"
Silence.
Her pulse quickened.
She laughed nervously.
"Very funny."
No answer.
Then...
A low growl.
Her blood froze.
The sound came from the darkness between the trees.
Two glowing golden eyes opened.
Then four.
Then six.
Shapes emerged from the shadows.
Massive wolves.
Far larger than any ordinary animal.
Their black fur glistened beneath the rain.
Their teeth looked like knives.
One stepped forward.
Another circled behind her.
"No..."
Her voice trembled.
"This isn't possible."
The largest wolf bared its teeth.
It growled louder.
Aria backed away.
One step.
Another.
Her heel caught a tree root.
She fell hard onto the wet ground.
The wolves advanced.
Closer.
Closer.
She searched desperately for something—anything—to defend herself.
Nothing.
The lead wolf lunged.
She screamed.
A thunderous roar exploded through the forest.
Every wolf froze.
The ground itself seemed to tremble.
Slowly...
Another wolf stepped from the darkness.
He was enormous.
Nearly twice the size of the others.
His fur shimmered silver beneath the rain.
His eyes...
They weren't gold.
They were an impossible shade of icy blue.
Beautiful.
Ancient.
Terrifying.
The black wolves lowered their heads.
Whining.
Afraid.
The silver wolf growled once.
A command.
The others immediately fled into the darkness.
Within seconds...
They were gone.
Only the silver wolf remained.
Rain poured around him.
He stared directly into Aria's eyes.
She should have run.
She should have screamed.
Instead...
She felt...
Safe.
The wolf slowly approached.
Her breathing stopped.
He lowered his massive head.
His nose brushed gently against the silver pendant hanging around her neck.
The pendant suddenly burst into brilliant light.
A silver mark appeared on Aria's wrist.
It burned.
She cried out.
The wolf jerked backward.
His blue eyes widened with shock.
As though he recognized the mark.
As though...
He recognized her.
"No..." she whispered.
"What are you?"
The wolf didn't answer.
Instead, he slowly bowed his head.
Like a king kneeling before his queen.
The wind suddenly stopped.
The rain froze in midair.
Time itself seemed to stand still.
Then...
A man's voice echoed inside her mind.
Deep.
Gentle.
Filled with centuries of longing.
"I finally found you..."
Aria's heart nearly stopped.
She looked around wildly.
There was no one else.
Only the wolf.
He hadn't opened his mouth.
Yet she had heard him as clearly as if he had been standing beside her.
She stumbled backward.
"This can't be real..."
The silver mark on her wrist flared brighter.
Pain shot through her arm.
A flood of images crashed into her mind.
A moonlit palace.
A silver throne.
A man wearing a crown.
Blue eyes.
The same blue eyes.
Blood.
Fire.
A wedding.
A broken oath.
She screamed and collapsed.
The world spun into darkness.
Just before unconsciousness claimed her, she heard hurried footsteps approaching.
Several unfamiliar voices shouted through the forest.
"There!"
"We found her!"
"And the Alpha..."
One voice suddenly trembled with fear.
"No... it can't be..."
"The Silver King has awakened."
Aria forced her heavy eyelids open for one final second.
The silver wolf was gone.
In his place stood a tall man dressed in black, his dark hair dripping with rain, his piercing blue eyes locked on hers with unmistakable recognition.
He whispered only three words.
"Welcome back, Luna."
