Hard day at work.
I walked through the door to the toddler room. My nerves were all over the place, however I tried to hide them as best as I could.
“Hello there,You must be Alexis?” A short woman said to me.
“Yes mam.” I replied.
“I am Helen. That’s Claire, she told me gesturing towards a taller woman.
“Hi there Alexis.” She said cheerfully. She was attending to a small boy. He was squirming and kicking around in front of her.
“Lexi!” Came a familiar voice. I turned to where the voice came from, a small girl began running towards me rapidly.
“Leanna, come here.” I said cheerfully as I crouched down to her level. She ran straight into me and hugged me tightly. I hugged her back, well as good as I could with a pot on one arm. Leanna turned and looked at my cast.
“Lexi, what’s that?” She asked me, looking at it intently.
“I hurt my arm sweetheart, and the doctors gave me this very cool pot.” I told her. “You can touch it, don’t worry it doesn’t hurt now, look!” I said while tapping on my cast.
Leanna stretched out her hand and touched the pot.
“It’s hard?” She said looking at it. Just then the door opened to the room.
“Lexi.” Came another voice. I recognised. I turned my body to face Carly, who was running towards me.
“Carly, Lexi has a booboo.” Leanna said sadly. Carly’s mum looked at me oddly, as her daughter stood beside me looking to where Leanna was pointing. A few other kids in the room began to come and inspect my arm.
“Lexi, what you do?” She asked me.
“I was a silly girl and slipped.” I told her. Just then a little boy came over, he was holding a felt tip pen and as he came to inspect my boo-boo his felt tip pen grazed over my cast. It left a coloured mark across the bright white cast.
“Wow. Can I do that?” Carly asked.
“Girls, let’s give Alexis some space shall we.” Helen suggested.
“It’s ok. I don’t mind.” I said to her. “Shall we go do some colouring guys?” I suggested to the kids that were surrounding me.
“Yay, come on Lexi!” Carly exclaimed happily. I got to my feet and was dragged towards a set of tables.
I gave each child a sheet of paper and had one for myself. I began to draw a flier, Leanna and Carly attempted to copy me and the other kids started to scribble on the paper.
We all remained focused at the colouring table for a while. It wasn’t until Claire shouted the kids that everyone started to lose focus.
“Kids. Snack time.” Claire said loudly.
“Yay.” They all said excited.
“Come on Lexi.” Leanna said.
“No sweetheart. I’m going to clean up. You go ahead.” I told her.
“Ok.” She said simply. I began to grab the sheets of papers off the table. I grabbed a pen and wrote the children’s names and the papers as I cleared it all away.
“Helen?” I said questionably.
“Yes dear?”
“Where do you want the drawings putting?” I asked her.
“The children all have draws, place them in there and the parents will collect them in an evening.” She said with a smile.
I found the draws and separated them all into their draws.
After the children had their snacks, Leanna and Carly came straight back to me.
“Girls let Alexis rest. Why don’t you go and play?” Claire suggested.
“Lexi, come too?” Carly asked adorably. Claire was about to say something, but I got there first.
“It’s ok. I don’t mind.” I told her politely. She shrugged her shoulders and continued with the boy she was dealing with. He looked like a handful.
Carly took hold of my hand and pulled me towards the toy kitchen area. She passed me a toy pan, “you make dinner?” She asked sweetly.
“Of course. What would you like?” I asked.
“Scetti!” They both shouted.
“Ok, one spaghetti coming up.” I returned playfully.
I spent the rest of the day, with Carly and Leanna asking me to play with them. I always tried to include the other children too, much to the girl's dismay. We were back on the colouring table as the day was finishing, and Carly placed a yellow line on my cast.
“How about you draw a flower on it.” I suggested.
“Yes please!” She exclaimed.
“Me too!” Leanna exclaimed.
“One at a time then.” I said. One by one the kids began to decorate my cast. The parents began to fetch the children one by one. Most of them asked what they had been up too. All the kids said they had drawn on Lexus booboo. I had to clarify every time but most of the parents laughed once they knew.
Leanna and Cary were the last to leave. The Beta and Gamma came to pick them up, not the mums.
“Ah, Alexis. How are you?” The gamma asked me.
“I’m good thank you sir.” I replied turning my eyes down as I bowed.
“Daddy, I drew on Lexis booboo.” Leanna exclaimed.
“What do you mean love?” He asked her. She pointed towards my arm.
“Oh no. What did Lexi do?” He asked not so discreetly.
“Lexi fell daddy. But in drew a flower look.” She told him dragging him closer to me. I began to get rather nervous. I lifted my arm and Leanna pointed to the area she had drawn on.
“Beautiful love. Now come on. Mummy is waiting.” He said sweetly to her.
“Ok daddy. By Lexi.” She shouted back as she walked out with the Gamma. I took a sigh of relief as the left. I really didn’t like being the centre of attention of adults. Kids were fine.
“Well, you seem to have done really well with them today, Alexis. How did you find it?” Helen asked me.
“I have really enjoyed it, thank you.” I told her.
“Do you want to help us tomorrow?” She asked me.
“Yes please.” I replied happily.
“Ok. Once you have signed in come straight here in the morning.” She explained.
“What about Kim?” I asked.
“I will speak to Kim. Come for around 7am.” She told me.
“You go now, and I will see you in the morning.” Helen said. I nodded my head and headed to the reception desk. I needed to sign out.
I was just finishing off when I heard the doors open.
“Oh, look it’s the mutt!” Came a familiar voice. I looked up to see Lisa and her crew. They were wearing the nursery’s uniform. Just then Kim walked out of the baby room.
“Lisa!” She said sternly.
“Oh, hi Kim. We were just saying hi.” She said before rapidly walking towards the afterschool room.
“What was that about?” She asked me.
“Nothing.” I said. Kim looked at me sternly but dropped the subject.
“So how was your day? It looks like the kids have had fun.” She said. I looked at her confused for a moment, until Kim pointed towards my pot.
“Oh yeah. The kids said it needed to be pretty.” I laughed.
“Well, you can head off now. I will see you tomorrow.” Kim told me. I nodded my head and began to walk out the room. I pushed the door to the nursery open and almost pushed it right into a warrior kid.
“Oh, my goddess. I am so sorry.” I exclaimed.
“It’s ok.” He spoke.
“Hi Alexis!” Came the Alphas son's voice. I stood up straight and dropped my eyes to the ground.
I nodded my head, and he walked past. The spell of cherries hit my nose, making me falter slightly. He continued on towards the afterschool room, and I headed towards the stairs. I needed to get out my uniform. I couldn’t stop thinking about the smell, however.
I walked to my room, still thinking about it. As I reached the 2nd floor, I was about to turn towards my room when I bumped into someone.
“I am so sorry.” I exclaimed as I looked up to see Damon glaring down at me. He never actually said anything. He just glared at me then continued walking. I watched him as he walked down the stairs. There was something familiar about him. I just couldn’t figure it out.
I continued towards my room. I pushed open my door and stepped inside. I headed straight for my bed, I intended on resting till dinner. I had some lunch in the nursery, they offered me breakfast too, but I never normally ate breakfast. I looked at my clock, 4:47. I decided to change out of my uniform first. I put on some grey leggings and a black T-shirt and folded my uniform ready for tomorrow. I laid on my bed thinking about what I had been doing in the nursery today.
I must have been tired as sleep began to take me. I woke up to a knocking on my door. I looked at the clock 8:12.
I jumped up out of bed and went straight to the door. I opened it just enough that I could see who was there.
“Libby. What’s up. Is everything ok?” I asked her, she had a worried expression on her face.
“I was going to ask you the same. You missed dinner?” She told me concerned.
“I’m fine. I nodded off that’s all.” I told her rubbing my eyes.
“Well I brought you this.” She said handing me a bag. I looked inside, there were two muffins inside.
“Thank you so much Libby.” I told her gratefully.
“See you tomorrow.” Libby said walking back down the corridor. I watched her walk down to her mum who was waiting for her.
