Lies and redemption

“Miss Kim, Alexis is trying to steal my bag.” She shouted. She had a grin on her face until Kim appeared at her side. Then she began fake crying and hyperventilating. Kim looked at me shocked. “Alexis, what on earth has gotten into you?” She asked me as she approached me. She held out her hand and I handed her the bag. I honestly didn’t know what to say. There was no point trying to defend myself in a rush either, Kim was believing Lisa. “Well?” Kim asked me. “I had just found it and was bringing it to you!” I said quietly. Kim looked at me intently. “Really? So why is Lisa saying you were stealing it?” She turned to Lisa now. “What makes you think that Alexis was stealing your bag, Lisa?” “Miss Kim, I saw her going through it. She was rummaging through it when I came in. I didn’t know she was here; she must have been hiding and waiting. Me, Khloe and Carmel had cleaned everywhere too, and look.” She pointed towards the kitchen area that was still dirty. “Alexis came in here early. She was here before you were.” Kim said. She was starting to doubt Lisa now. “That kitchen hasn’t been touched since last night. I came and checked before I went into the baby’s room. Now Alexis, do not touch what is not yours, and Lisa, keep your belongings with you in future.” She said sternly. I nodded my head and was just about to turn around. I was going to tidy the kitchen area and make a coffee. Lisa huffed and began to walk towards the exit again. She was not happy with the result. “Are you going for breakfast?” Kim asked me. “No Kim. I am going to finish cleaning up.” I replied, almost at the kitchen now. “Ok well can you go help in the toddler room from 8 please.” She asked me. A small smile formed on my face. I loved the toddlers. They were hyperactive but they were fun. “Yes Kim.” I replied. Kim headed through the doors, and I began cleaning the kitchen area. There were wrappers all on one counter and sugar spilled on another. There was also sugar on the floor to, making it feel sticky underfoot. I began by cleaning away all the wrappers and wiping down the sides. Then I fetched the mop from the supply closet. I continued to work by myself for roughly an hour. I had got the entire kitchen area and games area cleaned by the time people started to come back in. “Alexis, come here please.” Kim shouted from the doorway. “What can I do for you Kim?” I asked her as I reached where she was standing. “Have you had breakfast yet?” She asked me. “No kim. I wanted to get cleaned up in here.” I told her. “I lost track of time.” I added. I was partially telling the truth. “Well, you need to have something to eat. Then I want you in the baby room please.” She told me. “Ok Kim. I will go now.” I said looking at her. Kim stepped aside and I walked past her heading towards the dining room. I was glad I would be in the baby room. I would be away from everyone else then. I rounded the corner of the hallway near the kitchen area and wasn’t fully paying attention to where I was going, I bumped into someone. “Oh my god I am so sorry.” I rushed to say. I looked up and saw Damon stood looking at me. He looked furious, but he always looked like that. Then I noticed his eyes. They actually looked familiar somehow, I realised I was staring at him, I lowered my head rapidly and stood perfectly still. “Sorry sir. I wasn’t paying attention. It won’t happen again.” I said extremely apologetically. “You kids these days. Never watching where your going. You always seem to be wandering blind!” He said in a gruff tone. I remained looking down. I didn’t want to anger him any further. Although he was always angry. I can’t recall a time he was ever happy. “Sorry sir. It won’t happen again.” I repeated. “Yeah, heard that before!” He said. He stepped around me and continued down the hallway. I waited a moment before starting to walk towards the dining hall again. I was determined not to bump into anyone now. It would most definitely attract too much attention. I rounded the doorframe and looked towards the service area. There were still some bits left on there, so I headed over. I grabbed a plate and placed a small amount of food on it. I turned and looked for a seat to eat my breakfast at. As I was scanning the room I saw the Alpha table was still almost full of the alphas group. The table nearby was half empty and I considered taking a seat there. Then I changed my mind. I spotted a table nearby that was empty and decided I would sit alone. Once I was sat down, I heard some sniggering from nearby. As I looked up, I saw Lisa and her gang looking directly at me. They were all whispering between themselves, I knew they were talking about me. I didn’t care as long as they left me alone. I began to eat my food slowly, I never had a large appetite, especially in a morning. I got a feeling I was being watched after a while, I looked up and scanned the room. Lisa and her gang had left so it wasn’t them. The alphas table had started to disperse too. I looked towards the doorway and saw Damon stood there. He was looking directly at me. I dropped my gaze and continued to pick at my food. He must have been watching me for a good 5 minutes before he walked away. I breathed a sigh of relief and took my plate away, then headed back to work. It was going to be a busy day in the rooms. “Alexis, what time do you need to finish?” Claire loudly asked me. “3pm.” I said loudly. There were babies crying and it was hard to hear anyone. “Are you coming back afterwards?” She asked looking desperately at me. “I can do if you want.” I replied. She looked extremely relieved and nodded her head. “Thank you.” she mouthed, and I smiled at her, the babies were all unsettled today for some reason, none of them would settle fully, there were only 4 babies in here but at times it was as if there were 40. I looked at the clock 2:45, just then Kim came in through the door. She looked directly at me and smiled a little. She reached out her arms towards the baby I was cradling, and I willingly handed him over. He was only a few months old and was still adjusting to being away from his mum, I never understood why they would want to leave them so young, but everyone was different. “Go on. See you tomorrow.” She mouthed towards me. I was supposed to finish once I had my arm checked but I intended to come back. Claire needed the help. I walked out the baby room and into the passageway slowly. I didn’t want to bump into anyone. I made it to the main hallway and turned right towards the medical wing. I couldn’t wait to get this pot off. I would be able to shower properly and actually use it properly. It was just getting in the way now. I made it to the medical wing just as the clocks hit 3 pm. I headed for the same ward I went to when I had it fitted weeks ago. I could here the nurses talking away to themselves as I approached the wing. Just then one of them saw me. It was the same nurse that fitted my pot. I hid my grubby pot behind my back temporarily. “Ah Alexis. Nice to see you again. How’s your arm feeling now?” She asked me. I smiled at her, “It’s loads better thanks.” I told her, still holding my pot behind my back. “Come on then. Let’s get it off and check, shall we?” She suggested. She turned and grabbed some sort of contraption from the table behind her. As she did so I pulled my arm to the front of me and looked down at my feet. “Oh, well I take it the kids liked it then?” She said with a chuckle. “I am so sorry. I tried to keep it cleanish.” I said with a weak smile. “Oh stop fretting young lady. This is nothing. Actually I love the use of colours.” She said grabbing the underside of it. She began to cut down the pot length ways. I began to relax once I realised it wasn’t going to hurt. After she removed my pot, she sent me for an X-ray to make sure it had healed properly. After I had been X-rayed, I went back to the bay I was first in. I sat on the edge of the bed and waited for her. “Well, it seems it’s healed perfectly well, Alexis. Now that wrist is going to be rather weak for a while. I advise some gentle exercises to slowly strengthen it back up, and unfortunately it may hurt occasionally still, just while your muscles build up. Take this and wear it while you work. It will help give you the support you need. After a couple of weeks you should be as good as new.” She told me. She handed me a brace for my wrist. It had some sort of plate running through it. “Thank you very much. Am I able to go back to work now?” I asked her. “Yes, but remember to take it easy on that wrist. Just for a few weeks. I want you back for a check-up in two weeks.” She told me. I nodded my head and slid off the bed. I practically jogged out of the hospital wing. I couldn’t wait to get back and help Claire.
