Chapter 1
To save her ailing older brother, seven-year-old Vivian Sunderland volunteered to enter the Lindsay family's assassin training camp.
By age nine, she could handle every type of weapon with consummate skill.
At sixteen, she was the only one of the hundred girls in the training camp to walk out alive, and earned the right to stand before Roman Lindsay and become his personal bodyguard. From that day on, she became his most dependable, most effective weapon.
The Lindsay family's web of power was tangled and convoluted, and to help Roman seize control of the family, Vivian's hands were covered in blood.
When she was eighteen, an unexpected incident left them surrounded by traitors. It was Roman who took a bullet for her, saving her life. From that moment on, she fell for him.
For three years, they were partners who depended on each other for survival by day, and by night, they were lovers tangled in passionate intimacy.
Countless nights, they slept embraced in each other's arms, and Roman would whisper in her ear with sweet talk, "Vivian, I can't live without you."
She truly believed their love would last forever. That was until this time, when Roman was targeted by his enemies.
After fighting for hours, they finally found an opening to escape. She fought desperately to clear his way out, and the moment Roman picked up his fallen gun, a gunshot rang out with a sharp "bang."
Vivian didn't hesitate for a second—she threw herself in front of him, and three bullets ripped into her abdomen.
As she hovered on the edge of death, she saw Roman's eyes red from crying, hoarsely screaming "Vivian" in her ear.
She used the last of her strength to wipe the tears from the corner of his eye, whispered "It's okay, I don't feel any pain," and then lost consciousness.
An unknown amount of time later, she woke from her coma. The first thing she saw was the stark white ceiling of a hospital room.
Vivian felt completely weak all over. She was just about to call for help when she suddenly heard Roman's cold voice ring out not far away. "What do you think, Charlotte? I won the bet. I told you I wouldn't die even if I dragged it out longer—Vivian would definitely risk her life to save me."
Charlotte Ziegler spoke, her voice sweet as honey, "Fine, since you did exactly what I asked and survived, then what reward do you want?"
"Guess," the man's voice carried thick desire.
Vivian slowly turned her stiff neck, only to see the entwined figures of a man and a woman behind the hospital curtain.
She tried to speak, but no sound came out at all.
Turns out, everything had just been a bet. Her pain and injury meant nothing to him. Even worse, he had even gambled with her life.
Through the thin curtain, she saw clearly that Roman had Charlotte pinned underneath him, kissing her passionately.
"Roman, she's right over there..." Charlotte spoke out.
"Don't mind her." Roman's voice was low and deep, "Don't you want this too?"
Charlotte couldn't stifle a soft moan.
All the blood in Vivian's body froze. Her heart almost stopped beating, and her mind went completely blank.
Four years ago, before Roman took control of the family, his childhood sweetheart Charlotte had been forced by her parents to marry abroad. And just a month ago, she had gotten divorced and returned to the country.
Vivian suddenly remembered that her first time with Roman was actually on the very day of Charlotte's wedding. He was drunk, and he held her tight and whispered in her ear, "Don't leave. Stay here with me, okay?" She couldn't refuse, and let herself fall in his embrace.
After that one night together, she became his secret lover, kept hidden in the shadows.
By day, he was always cold toward her, but once night fell, he became almost feverishly passionate, his appetite insatiable...
Only at this moment did Vivian understand that she had been nothing more than a tool for Roman to vent his desires on.
Her heart was torn to pieces.
After their pleasure ended, she heard Charlotte ask Roman, "Since you're going to marry me, what will become of Vivian after this?"
Roman's voice was deep, "She's been with me for three years, I'll find a way to compensate her. Still, as a bodyguard, she's really incredibly useful. I'll keep her by my side..."
"But she is so proud and stubborn, she probably won't agree to that, will she?" Charlotte reminded Roman about Vivian's strong character, and Charlotte also wanted to test him.
"She will." Roman's tone was casual and offhand, laced with the confidence of having her completely under his thumb, "Her brother is still in my hands..."
Vivian's gaze went hollow, a thick bitterness welled up in her throat.
So even her brother was just a tool to control her.
Her face went deathly pale, her fingers curled unconsciously, her nails digging almost into the flesh of her palm, yet she felt no pain at all.
When she heard Roman getting to his feet, Vivian turned her head away and pretended to still be asleep.
A few minutes passed, and she feigned just waking up. When Roman saw her open her eyes, he brushed his large hand over her cheek and asked with concern: "Vivian, how do you feel? Does anything hurt?"
Vivian shook her head, and her face looked calm.
"You saved my life this time. You can ask for anything you want..." Roman's brow furrowed tightly, a flicker of heartache crossing his eyes.
Vivian opened her mouth, speaking softly, "Anything at all?"
"Of course." Roman agreed.
"Can I see my brother?" After Vivian finished speaking her request, a flicker of complicated emotion crossed Roman's eyes. He paused, then pulled his hand back.
She keenly sensed something was wrong. "What's wrong?"
Charlotte, who had been standing to the side, suddenly spoke up, "Aaron Sunderland has been going on vacation with my brother lately, he won't be back for another month."
Vivian's pupils sharply contracted. She struggled to push herself up. "What?"
Everyone in Belking City knew that Charlotte's brother, Simon Ziegler, was a p*****t. He sleeps with both men and women, and he loves to torture people. Everyone who has slept with him has ended up either dead or maimed.
Aaron was born with a genetic disease and has always been frail. The moment she thought about what might be happening to her brother, Vivian's eyes could not help but fill with tears.
"Roman, you just promised me I could ask for anything! I want you to send someone to bring my brother back right now!" Vivian spoke loudly, as if shouting, right after she woke up.
Before Roman could say anything, Charlotte spoke first, "Vivian, know your place. You are nothing but a bodyguard—how dare you order your master around? Your sickly brother has already cost the Lindsay family so much money. What's the harm in letting him keep my brother company for a bit? He won't hurt him, anyway."
Tremor crept into Vivian's voice: "Charlotte, that is my brother! He is not some toy for you all to trade back and forth!"
Roman narrowed his eyes, gazing at her without expression, and spoke in an unyielding voice that brooked no argument: "Enough. There is no need to discuss this matter further. You and Aaron both belong to the Lindsay family. My decision is not for you to question. Recover well, Vivian. You can make other requests once you have recovered." With that, he left the room with Charlotte.
He knew full well that Aaron was the only family she had left in this whole world!
Knowing begging would get her nowhere, Vivian forced down the rising panic in her chest.
After they left, she dialed a number, "You once said you owed me your saving grace. I'm begging you to rescue my brother from Simon, and help us escape the Lindsay family."
