Chapter 1
Shaylee POV I stared at my reflection in the mirror. My long black hair was pulled into a messy bun. My eyeliner, which my bright green eyes pop, was perfect and I had applied a light pink lip gloss. I look pretty good today. I smiled. It was my first day at my new school. I am a junior in high school. My family and I just moved here. My father is a surgeon and he accepted a position at the hospital here in this small town. My mother is a lawyer and found a job in the next city over. We moved from California and now live in Colorado. I made sure that my appearance looked perfect one last time before grabbing my bag and heading to downstairs to the kitchen. I reached the bottom of the stairs and the smell of bacon filled my nostrils. I turned the corner and saw my mom standing at the stove, humming to herself. “Good morning mom,” I said smiling. She turned around and smiled back at me. “Good morning sweetheart.” She turned her attention back to the stove. “Are you hungry?” “Yeah, I can never say no to bacon.” I went to the cabinet and pulled out a plate. “Are you ready for your first day at your new school?” She questioned. “I think so,” I replied as I loaded bacon onto my plate. I walked to the table and sat down, putting a piece of bacon into my mouth. “I feel good about today.” “Good. I need to be to work in about an hour and your father has already left. We both will be back kind of late,” she said. She came over and kissed the top of my head. “Have a good day sweetie. Love you.” “Love you too mom.” I finished eating after she left for work. I put my plate in the sink and washed my hands. I grabbed my bag and my keys. I walked out onto the porch and locked the door behind me. I slid behind the driver seat of my black Jeep Wrangler. It was a sweet sixteen present from my parents. I love this car. I backed out of the driveway and headed down the road toward the school. It was a short ten-minute drive. I pulled into the parking lot and noticed that it was filling up fast. I pulled into a spot and turned off the engine. I looked around at the other students milling about. This is it. You can do this Shaylee. I stepped out of my Jeep and headed toward the large building. As soon as I stepped inside, I immediately felt lost. I glanced around trying to figure out where the office was. I started walking down the hallway. I was too busy looking at the doors to notice someone standing in front of me. Of course, I ran right into this person. “I am so sorry. I wasn’t watching where I was going,” I quickly apologized. “Oh, that’s ok. Don’t worry about it.” The girl said smiling. “Are you new here? I haven’t seen you around here before.” “Yeah. It’s my first day. My name is Shaylee.” I smiled back at her. She was pretty. She had long blond hair and dark blue eyes. “Great to meet you Shaylee. I’m Nicole. Are you trying to find the office?” She asked and I nodded. “Here, follow me.” I followed her down the hall and around a corner. “I’ll wait for you,” she said when we reached the office. “Thank you.”  I walked into the office and was greeted by the receptionist. “Good morning dear. How can I help you?” She smiled warmly, which caused me to smile in return. “Today is my first day and I need to get my schedule.” “Of course. What’s your name?” “Shaylee Evans” I said. She started typing on her computer while humming to herself. She seems nice I thought. “Ah, here we are. Let me print this for you” she said then walked to the printer. She handed me my schedule. “Have a good day dear!” “Thanks” I said and left the office. Nichole was waiting for me and smiled when she saw me. “Let me see your schedule.” I handed her the paper and she scanned over it. I was watching the other people in the hallway. I nearly peed my pants when Nichole squealed rather loudly. “You have every class with me except one.” “Which one?” I asked. “Calculus. I’m not smart enough to be in calculus” she laughed. “Ok, so we have English Lit first. Come on, let’s go.” She grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the classroom. We walked in and I followed her to our seats. I sat down behind her and sighed. She introduced me to her friend, Macie. She seems nice, just like Nichole. The teacher walked in and hushed everyone and started with the lesson. Before I knew it, class was over. We had two more classes then it was time for lunch. Thank goodness because I’m getting hungry. After Nichole, Macie, and I left the line, we searched for a table and sat down. Nichole and Macie were talking about clothes and a bunch of other stuff. I wasn’t really paying any attention. I was too focused on my food. Halfway through my sandwich, I felt like someone was watching me. I looked around and finally caught the stare of a very cute brown-haired boy. When our eyes locked, he smiled. I smiled back. “Earth to Shaylee.” I heard Nichole say my name. I snapped my heard toward her. “What?” I asked. “What are you staring at?” She turned around and looked to where the brown-haired boy was sitting. She turned back around with a goofy grin on her face. “What?” “Oh nothing. I see you caught the eye of Chase Parker.” She said giggling. “He’s only the quarterback of the football team and the most popular guy in school.” “Really?” It was more of statement rather than a question. I looked back over to him and saw that he was still staring at me. The bell rang bringing me out of my trance. He smiled and waved at me, so I waved back. I grabbed my things and stood up. I glanced back over to Chase, but he was already gone. Bummer. I threw my trash away and headed to my next class.
