Instead of dying, she awakens something ancient. A forgotten curse binds itself to her, forming a quiet but constant presence that guides her survival. Unlike the Alpha who rejected her, the presence never abandons her. Under its influence, Ariella’s wolf and power evolve, reshaping her into something far beyond an omega. As Ariella grows stronger, Kael begins to suffer the consequences of his choice. The bond that shouldn't be
Chapter 1 ****************** ARIELLA: The whisper comes before the bond. "He cannot have you." The voice slides into my mind without warning smooth, intimate, and utterly foreign. It doesn’t echo the way thoughts do. It doesn’t hesitate. It sounds certain, as if it has been waiting for this exact moment to speak. My breath stutters. I tighten my grip on the hem of my dress and glance around the ceremonial clearing, heart pounding hard enough to bruise my ribs from the inside. Torches burn in a wide circle around the sacred stone, their flames bowing beneath the weight of the full moon. Hundreds of wolves stand shoulder to shoulder, faces lifted skyward, scents thick with anticipation. No one is looking at me. They never do. I’m Ariella Arthur, omega, unranked, forgettable. I exist on the edges of the pack, a shadow that cleans messes and keeps quiet. Tonight isn’t about wolves like me. Tonight is about destiny. About mates. About the Moon Goddess reaching down and binding lives together. I was never meant to be bound. "He will try, the voice murmurs," closer now, as if it’s leaning in. "But you are not empty." A chill snakes down my spine. My fingers curl reflexively, nails biting into my palm. I’ve never heard voices. I don’t have visions. I don’t have power. There is nothing special about me. I tell myself it’s nerves. Too many wolves. Too much moonlight. Too much pressure in the air. Then the Alpha steps forward. Kael Blackwoods moves into the center of the stone circle, and the pack reacts instantly—heads bowing, bodies stiffening, instincts snapping to attention. Power rolls off him in dense, controlled waves, the kind that presses against the chest and demands obedience without ever asking for it. He is tall, broad-shouldered, carved from shadows and authority. His dark hair is pulled back at his nape, his expression unreadable, honed into something sharp and distant. I’ve never been this close to him before. I shouldn’t be looking at him. But something inside me pulls. My gaze lifts against my will. The moment his eyes meet mine, the world fractures. Heat slams into my chest like a physical blow. My lungs seize as fire rips through my veins, scorching every nerve ending in its path. My knees buckle, and I barely catch myself before collapsing onto the stone. Mate. The word doesn’t form in my mind it brands itself there. The bond crashes into me violently, overwhelming and consuming, flooding my senses with awareness so sharp it borders on agony. My heart hammers wildly as instinct roars awake inside me, desperate and demanding. This is what it’s supposed to feel like. This is fate. And then something goes wrong. The heat stutters hesitates as if it’s struck something solid. A pressure coils around my soul, cold and deliberate, tightening with unmistakable intent. Not pain. Possession. A shadow slips through the bond, threading itself through the heat like ink through water. My vision blurs as something ancient stirs beneath my skin, alert and watchful. Across the circle, Kael goes utterly still. Shock flashes across his face not awe, not recognition. Horror. His pupils dilate sharply, breath catching in his throat as if he’s been struck just as violently as I have. The bond flares between us, unstable and flickering, and for one raw heartbeat, everything bleeds together. His strength. His dominance. His fear. Not fear of me. Fear of what is with me. The whisper returns, unmistakably pleased. "There," it says softly. "He sees it." The bond strains, pulling unevenly, its edges fraying as if something is interfering blocking it from settling the way it should. Pain lances through my chest, sharp and sudden, forcing a gasp from my lips. Murmurs ripple through the pack. Kael takes a step back. The Alpha of Blackmoor retreats from an omega. The realization hits harder than the bond itself. Confusion flickers through the crowd, quickly followed by unease. I can feel it in the air instincts prickling, wolves sensing that something is off even if they don’t yet understand why. My wolf whimpers inside me, confused and frightened, curling inward as the pressure tightens. This is wrong. The bond doesn’t feel whole. It feels… interrupted. “A mistake,” Kael says abruptly, his voice slicing through the murmurs like a blade. Every head snaps toward him. He stares at me as though I’m a threat that hasn’t decided whether to strike yet. His fists clench at his sides, knuckles whitening, jaw locked so tight I can see the muscles jumping beneath his skin. “This bond” He stops, breath hitching. The connection surges. Agony detonates in my chest as the bond lashes out wildly, dragging images across my mind that are not my own. Blood-soaked ground. Wolves kneeling in terror. A shadow towering behind me, vast and endless, its presence pressing against my spine. I cry out, collapsing to my knees as the vision shatters. Across from me, Kael staggers. His breath tears free in a sharp, broken sound. For the first time since I’ve known of him, the Alpha looks shaken unsteady on his feet. He saw it. “No,” he breathes, the word ripped from him like a plea. Elder Rowan steps forward, his lined face pale beneath his silver beard. “Alpha,” he says carefully, warning lacing his tone. “The Moon Goddess does not make mistakes.” Kael’s head snaps toward him. “She did not choose this.” His gaze cuts back to me, dark and furious not with hatred, but with something far worse. Fear laced with certainty. “You don’t know what you’re carrying,” he says quietly. My ears ring. “I don’t” My voice trembles. “I don’t understand.” For one terrible moment, I think he might hesitate. Think he might step forward. Instead, his expression hardens. Armor slams back into place. “I, Alpha Kael Blackwoods,” he declares, his voice carrying effortlessly across the clearing, “reject Ariella Arthur as my mate.” The bond snaps. Pain explodes through me like a bomb detonating in my chest. It feels as though my soul is being ripped apart, torn free thread by thread. I scream, the sound raw and feral echoing off the sacred stones as I collapse forward. This isn’t a clean break. It’s violent. The bond doesn’t sever completely it fractures, leaving jagged remnants embedded deep inside me. Heat and cold collide viciously, my body convulsing as magic tears through me in chaotic waves. Gasps erupt around the circle. Rejection isn’t supposed to be public. It isn’t supposed to destroy you. I taste blood as my teeth cut into my lip. My wolf shrieks in my mind, wounded and panicking, curling inward as something else unfurls in the space the bond leaves behind. Not injured. Awakened. Darkness spreads beneath my skin, deliberate and controlled, soothing where the bond burned. The pain dulls not disappearing, but reshaping into something sharper, more focused. Purposeful. I force my eyes open through the haze. Kael is still standing. Still whole. But his breathing is shallow, his shoulders tense, his gaze locked on me with an intensity that makes my skin prickle. Through the ruined bond, I feel it his pain, sudden and unwelcome, snapping back at him like a whip. The crowd whispers. Elder Rowan’s voice trembles as he speaks. “Alpha… a rejection like this....” “She cannot stay,” Kael cuts in. “She cannot be Luna.” The words slice deeper than the bond ever could. “There is a prophecy,” he continues, his voice cold and resolute, “and she stands on the wrong side of it.” Prophecy. The word crawls through the pack like poison. I stare at him, chest heaving, vision blurring. “You’re condemning me,” I whisper. His jaw tightens. For a heartbeat, something flickers in his eyes regret, maybe. Then it’s gone. “You were born wrong,” he says. The pack turns away. And inside me, something ancient opens its eyes fully for the first time. It stretches through my veins, dark and vast, coiling possessively around my shattered bond. The markings beneath my skin throb faintly, unseen but alive. The Moon Goddess remains silent. The Presence does not. They cannot unmake you, it whispers gently. They can only set you free. And as darkness settles around my broken fate, I know with terrifying certainty This rejection will not end me. It has only revealed what was already mine.
