Chapter 1 One Night
The music was loud enough to make the glasses on the bar tremble. Katie sat with her elbow resting against the counter, her fingers wrapped loosely around a glass of whiskey. The club was alive around her—bodies moving beneath flashing lights, laughter spilling over the music, couples pressed together on the dance floor. She should have been enjoying herself. Instead, she was thinking about him. Her boyfriend. The argument they'd had earlier replayed in her mind for what felt like the hundredth time. It hadn't even been a big argument. At least, that's what she had told herself when she left the house. But somehow, small disagreements always felt bigger when you loved someone. Katie sighed and took another sip. "Forget him tonight," her friend had told her before they entered the club. At the time, she'd laughed. Now she was beginning to understand what her friend meant. The alcohol was slowly warming her body, making her thoughts softer around the edges. The music seemed to pull her deeper into the moment. Then she felt it. Someone watching her. Katie slowly turned her head. Across the room stood a man. Tall. Dark-haired. His black shirt was rolled slightly at the sleeves, revealing his forearms. He wasn't dancing. He wasn't talking to anyone. He was simply looking at her. Their eyes met. Katie's breath caught. She looked away almost immediately. Don't. She picked up her glass again. One second. Two. She looked back. He was still watching her. This time, neither of them looked away. Something passed between them. Something dangerous. Something Katie couldn't quite explain. Maybe it was the alcohol. Maybe it was the music. Maybe it was the fact that she was angry, lonely and tired of thinking about the man who had upset her. Whatever it was, she didn't stop it. The stranger started walking toward her. Katie's heart began beating faster. He moved through the crowd with an effortless confidence that made her nervous in a way she didn't want to admit. When he finally reached her, he leaned closer so she could hear him. "Are you always this hard to approach?" Katie raised an eyebrow. "Who said I wanted to be approached?" A smile slowly spread across his face. "No one." His eyes dropped briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes. "But you haven't asked me to leave." Katie tried not to smile. "And what makes you think I won't?" "Because you've been looking at me too." Her cheeks warmed. "I was not." He chuckled. "Sure." For some reason, that little smile irritated her. Or maybe it attracted her. She couldn't tell anymore. "I'm Katie." He held her gaze. "Nice to meet you, Katie." He told her his name, but the music swallowed part of it. "What?" she asked. He leaned closer. She could smell his cologne—warm, clean and intoxicating. He repeated it. This time she heard him. They talked. At first, about nothing important. The club. The music. The drinks. Where they were from. But the longer they spoke, the less Katie remembered why she had come out that night. He made her laugh. Actually laugh. And when he offered his hand and asked her to dance, she hesitated for only a moment before placing her hand in his. The music changed. His hand settled lightly at her waist. Katie's pulse jumped. They moved together, slowly at first, then with the rhythm. The world around them blurred. The flashing lights. The people. The music. Everything disappeared until there was only the space between them. He leaned closer. "You look like you're trying very hard not to enjoy yourself." Katie smiled. "Maybe I am." "Why?" She looked into his eyes. "Because enjoying myself tonight might make me forget something I shouldn't." His expression changed. "Then maybe you need to forget for a little while." She knew she should have walked away. Instead, she stayed. The night became a collection of blurred moments. Another drink. Another dance. His laughter against her ear. Her fingers brushing his. The way he looked at her every time their eyes met. At some point, they left the dance floor. At another point, they were outside. Then there was the quiet ride through the city, the lights passing across the windows as Katie stared ahead, her heart racing with a mixture of excitement and uncertainty. She knew where they were going. And she knew she could still say no. But she didn't. When they reached the hotel, Katie stood beside him in the hallway, suddenly aware of how quiet everything was. He looked at her. "You sure?" She swallowed. For one brief moment, the argument with her boyfriend returned to her mind. Then she pushed the thought away. "Yes." He reached for her hand. The elevator doors closed. And with them, Katie's last chance to pretend the night meant nothing disappeared. --- Morning came too quickly. Katie woke to pale sunlight spilling through the curtains. Her head throbbed. She blinked several times, trying to remember where she was. Then she turned. The other side of the bed was empty. Her heart stopped. She sat up. The room was silent. No stranger. No voice. Nothing. Only the faint scent of his cologne lingering in the air. Then the memories returned. The club. The staring. The dancing. The hotel. Katie's stomach twisted. "Oh God." She pressed both hands against her face. What had she done? She had a boyfriend. A man she loved. A man she had been fighting with only hours before. And now— Katie looked around the empty room. The stranger was gone. Just like that. He hadn't even stayed long enough for goodbye. She reached for her phone. Several messages from her boyfriend were waiting. Her heart sank. She couldn't bring herself to open them. All day, Katie tried to behave normally. She showered. She ate. She went home. She smiled when someone spoke to her. But nothing felt normal. Every few minutes, another memory returned. His eyes across the club. His voice. The warmth of his hand in hers. The way she'd looked at him. Katie closed her eyes. She wished she could erase the entire night. But memories didn't disappear simply because you regretted making them. And Katie was beginning to realize something terrifying. Last night had been only one night. But its consequences might follow her for much longe
