Spotlight and Sticks
The roar of the crowd vibrated through the auditorium, a pulsating wave of nervous energy. Everly Lawson, poised at the podium bathed in the spotlight, took a deep breath. Her voice, clear and confident, rang out as she delivered the closing argument for the debate team. Her opponent, a nervous sophomore, fumbled through his rebuttal, his voice barely audible over the growing murmurs of disapproval. Everly, a seasoned debater, pressed his advantage, dismantling his arguments with practiced ease. Across the hall, in the echoing gymnasium, a different kind of energy crackled. Ashton Cole, the star hockey player, maneuvered around the rink with effortless grace, his stick a blur as he weaved through the opposing team. The crowd erupted in cheers with each dazzling movement, chanting his name with a fervour that bordered on religious devotion. Ever, catching a glimpse of the commotion through a nearby window, I felt a familiar pang of annoyance. Ashton Cole. The name itself was a four-syllable synonym for arrogance in Ever's mind. He was the embodiment of everything she despised: effortless popularity, a cocky grin plastered permanently on his face, and an inflated sense of self-importance fueled by his athletic prowess. While Ever poured over research papers and honed her debate skills late into the night, Ashton seemed to glide through life on a wave of effortless charm and athletic glory. The final gavel of the debate judge brought Ever back to the present. Relief washed over her as the team was declared the victor. Her teammates, a motley crew of passionate intellectuals, erupted in cheers, congratulating each other with backslaps and high-fives. Ever smiled, a genuine expression of accomplishment lighting up her face. This was her domain, the realm of logic and well-constructed arguments, a world where Ashton Cole's charm held no sway. Leaving the auditorium, Ever bumped into a group of students flooding out of the gym. The scent of sweat and adrenaline hung heavy in the air. In the center of the throng stood Ashton, still buzzing from his on-ice victory. He was surrounded by a gaggle of admirers, his smile as blinding as the halogen lights above the rink. As their eyes met, a flicker of something akin to amusement crossed Ashton's face. Ever, however, offered him nothing but a steely glare before turning away, her dislike for the hockey star burning brighter than ever.
